OhmsLawn,

Looks like it bans natural gas. Doesn’t mention diesel in the article. I was wondering what they’d do for backup power.

OhmsLawn,

I figured as much. Gotta have backup power.

OhmsLawn,

That’s a silly title.

The sun doesn’t produce a lot of energy because it is hot. The sun produces energy because it is big. All functional experimental fusion reactors operate at much higher temperatures than the sun.

TIL about blindsight, a phenomenon by which visually blind people can apparently see or detect objects without using their visual cortex (en.m.wikipedia.org)

It was a footnote in an article I read about a monkey using blindsight and that there had been several experiments with humans proving blindsight existed and that surprised me. As a footnote....

OhmsLawn,

It’s a very long Royal Institution video, but the first section covers this topic with footage of Helen the monkey. The whole video is fascinating.

OhmsLawn,

This video uses blind sight in the Intro as a hook for an hour long lecture on sentience.

OhmsLawn,

It’s pretty bulletproof.

Unless I have a damn good reason, things usually end up on the thirds lines in some way.

Titan is small, and distant, when compared to the photo in the thread.

The photo in this thread is by Cassini, which was at least a thousand of times closer. Titan is 1.2 million KM from Saturn, which Cassini was orbiting, while Earth, which JWST “orbits” is at least 1.2 billion KM from Saturn.

OhmsLawn,

It looks far less habitable up close lol.

OhmsLawn,
OhmsLawn,

I shit-canned about 20 years with active alcoholism, but then made a fairly good showing in the following 15, I’d say I’m probably 10 years behind. Thankfully, my current job has a real pension, rather than a defined-contribution plan. I should be ok, assuming the city is.

OhmsLawn,

Mid 40’s by birth

OhmsLawn,

I just made a bunch of Pixel 7 astro shots in the last week.

I’ve found the bright spot in the middle to be consistent enough that I added a mask to my Lightroom preset to cancel it out. I’m not really sure what they were going for there. I suppose it could be some sort of lens or stacking artifact. I just don’t get it. With all the processing they use to make these captures, you’d think they would’ve evened it out themselves. Either way, it’s simple enough to work around.

I’ve always been really impressed by astro mode. I had a 3a before, and even that produced stunning starscapes.

OhmsLawn,

There have been quite a few good ones since, but the first concert that my parents let me go by myself to was a Primus NYE show in Oakland, some time around '94. I was, maybe 15? It was the coolest thing ever. Why was it so amazing? I mean, it was Primus, there was weed everywhere, and I was 15.

OhmsLawn,

Fuck yeah, it does!

Patterned clothes are less interesting than textured clothes

I rarely find myself taking a second look at a piece of clothing whose only notable quality is a properly applied shade or hue. The main draw in every piece of compelling apparel is its texture. Does it look sheer? Soft? Stiff? The emotion evoked by a slogan, illustration, or pattern is nearly always superseded or at least...

OhmsLawn,

Size, material, color, cut, weave (weight, texture, pattern), appliqué.

That would be my hierarchy of clothing qualities. If I’m shopping for clothes, any one of those variables could tank an item, but I’m generally going to work left-to-right.

I guess that would be the ideal, but in reality, color and appliqué are the first things I see, so those can be a quick sorting strategy.

OhmsLawn,

The Cranberries’ Zombie.

I just didn’t get it, probably hadn’t learned about The Troubles yet. It was also pretty inescapable for a time when I was a kid. I just found the chorus to be irksome.

It was actually an Elizabeth Zaharoff video that opened my eyes to it again. She’s done that for a few songs that I either didn’t like, or completely missed out on.

OhmsLawn,

I’ve literally teared up from songs I didn’t care about before after her analysis.

OhmsLawn,

It’s possible, if you have the savings for a second down payment. I’m pretty sure you also lose certain tax advantages if you convert your primary home to an income property. Depending on how long you’ve owned it, that can work out to a serious hit.

I feel relief after pulling off my toenails, whats wrong with me?

When I pull off my toenails I feel relief. It still hurts to do but afterwards I get a sense of overwhelming calm. Ignoring the pain aspect, It’s kind of similar to the feeling of having a blocked nose become clear. Is this indicative of anything?/ does anyone else experience something similar?

OhmsLawn,

For me, the first 4 lines go on the bottom, with the signature.

One of my managers cold-starts his emails with Name,. That’s a little too dry for my style, but obviously Dear is far too mushy. I stick with Hi, Hello, Hey, or Greetings, depending on the context.

We have measuring cups, along with similarly standardized spoons and liquid measuring cups (same measurement just a different form factor).

Everyone who cooks has at least one set. I literally never had (nor needed) a scale in the kitchen until I started baking, in my forties.

OhmsLawn,

If you get into baking bread, you buy a scale. It doesn’t change the problem with volume vs weight, because American flour is sold in pounds, and the recipes are all in grams or bakers ratios.

What it does help with (in bread baking) is consistently and speed. It’s much faster to dump 500g of flour in a bowl than to measure out that many cups.

For almost everything else, cups are faster and easier.
