Du beziehst Gas, hast Zugriff auf den Gaszähler und kannst den Zählerstand deinem Versorger melden?

Dann mach das besser mal heute noch. Ab morgen gelten wieder 19% MwSt. Statt der zuletzt reduzierten 7% und bei Verbrauchsschätzung (wegen fehlender Zwischenstände) durch den Versorger kann es dadurch womöglich teurer werden als es müsste.

@smashingsecurity @gcluley @varmazis Re the “Turning off AirDrop (at least in public spaces)” advice: Starting with iOS 16.2, iOS no longer has a setting to have AirDrop publicly available all the time. Here’s the setting on an iPhone with iOS 17.4.1 which only enables you to turn it on publicly for ten minutes at most with the fallback being “Contacts only”.

Might still be a good safety measure to turn it off generally, but it’s no longer as crucial.

Es ist schon wieder passiert.

Dutzende Photos bearbeitet. Gerade fertig. Dann bemerkt, dass „Night Shift“ am Laptop an war, was alle Bilder hat wärmer erscheinen lassen als sie sind.

Also noch mal zurück. Hoffentlich reicht’s, am Weißabgleich zu drehen.

My ancient 2 is evidently getting too slow to run properly.

I don't want to spin up a VM, or buy a huge server. I want something discrete and discreet.

I like the look of the "Yellow", but I refuse to buy any gadget which doesn't use USB-C for power. So no PoE either.

So, does anyone have a personal recommendation for a HomeAssistant device which has built-in Matter / Thread / Zigbee support?

(I know how to Google. Looking for word-of-mouth recommendations.)

I’ve been quite happy with mine (non-PoE though) for some months now.

@Edent Fair. I have Ethernet switches with PoE output installed, so had I gotten the PoE version, there wouldn’t be a single-use dongle.

After 2 weeks of using ( ):

  • Currently it is providing around 5% to my daily consumption, which is not much. It's December and the heatpump is running hard.
  • The biggest challenge is to prevent export to the grid. The sun is shining when the consumption of the house is the lowest. Currently I am preventing it with some automations, which turn on dehumidifier (which I use for drying clothes) in a laundry room or a boiler.

How do you prevent el. export?

@po3mah I don’t. I optimise for usage in times of yield to a reasonable level* but if some power is exported, so be it.

*dish washer, washing machine, charging devices I would have charged that day anyway. But no unnecessary consumption just to not export anything.

@bagder At least the Leica Q2 and Leica M11 have curl in their licenses. Not sure if that counts as Embedded Linux, some RTOS variant, or if you want to add “Leica cameras” 😃

Oder lässt sich Hue inzwischen gar nicht mehr ohne Account aufsetzen?

Ich nutze Hue seit 2017 und habe das auch ebensolang in HomeAssistant eingebunden. Bislang lässt sich das ohne Probleme steuern.

Der Bridge habe ich über den Router den Internetzugang abgeklemmt.

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

@evan Rebase is good. As long as you only use it for commits that have not been pushed (or rather: have not been pulled by others).
As soon as you rewrite history, which is what rebase does, git hinders you from pushing without using --force.

Rebase is helpful for clutter free feature branches that endure a few pushes to the base branch (e.g. main) until you merge that feature branch. Otherwise, it’d be full of “merge xyz into yza” commits.

@amoroso I blame GitHub’s naming and prefer GitLab’s here: They call it Merge Request instead of Pull Request.

Then it should be clearer: You as a person with their computer pull from the central repository place (GH, GL, BitBucket, …) to get the changes and push to it so it gets the changes.

“Pull Request” makes sense if you spin the direction of actors: You want to make a request for the repository to pull your changes in, as if you were now the central repository place.

I updated all apps on my phone and that friendly blue-white twittering bird was replaced by a brutal looking X, reminiscent of the Z on Russian tanks. Gives me a bad mood when looking at my phone. I had to move it off the front page.

Ich habe mir komplett freiwillig den Umbau von java.util.Date und SimpleDateFormat zu java.time APIs aufgehalst und muss mich jetzt mit den Feinheiten von Offsets, Zeitzonen, Anzeige- und Übertragungsdatentypen beschäftigen.

Nach einigen Stunden frage ich mich inzwischen: Warum habe ich das eigentlich angenfangen?

Wie soll zum Beispiel das Aufnahmedatum eines Photos angezeigt werden, dessen Metadaten nur LocalDateTime beinhalten und im besten Fall ZonedDateTime?

Möchte ich ein um Mitternacht an Neujahr in Sydney aufgenommenes Bild als 2023-01-01T00:00:00+11:00 im UI sehen oder als 2022-12-31T15:00:00+02:00, weil ich gerade in einer Zeitzone mit GMT+2 Offset bin? 🥴

@sothawo EXIF-Daten können bislang allerdings nicht mal Zeitzonen, wenn ich das bisher richtig mitbekommen habe, sondern ausschließlich GMT-Offsets. Und nicht mal die werden von allen Kameras unterstützt.

In hotels I often make up my name, adress and birthdate when they ask for it. Because I don’t trust their IT security.
Some people laugh at me for that - they think it's paranoia. But a few days ago 6 TB of data from the big European hotel chain was leaked by a ransomware group - including millions of customer names and dates. So maybe it’s not paranoia not to give your real data to hotels. (The same counts for online shops, gyms and many other institutions of course)
