This issue doesn’t happen very often, maybe every few weeks. That’s why I think a nightly reboot is overkill, and weekly might be missing the mark? But you are right in any case: regardless of what the cron says, the machine might never get around to executing it.

Nope, haven’t. It says I have 2 GB of swap on a 16 GB RAM system, and that seems reasonable.

Why would you recommend turning swap off?

Thank you for these ideas, I will read up on systat+sar and give it a go.

Also smart to have the script always running, sleeping, rather than launching it at intervals.

I know all of this is a poor hack, and I must address the cause - but so far I have no clues what’s causing it. I’m running a bunch of Docker containers so it is very likely one of them painting itself into a corner, but after a reboot there’s nothing to see, so I am now starting with logging the top process. Your ideas might work better.

You know you are right, and I’ve tried. I can manually monitor but it doesn’t happen just then. I don’t know yet what causes it, I can only assume it’s one of the Docker containers because the machine is doing nothing else.

I am doing this to find out how often it happens, how quickly it happens, and what’s at the top when it happens.

That’s a good idea, didn’t know Docker had such capability. I will read up on that - could you give me some keywords to start on?

Yes, but given the fact that there can we weeks between incidents, that is going go be a long time to be without my services.

Appreciation / shock at workplace IT systems

After self hosting several services for a few users, with SSO, backups, hardware issues etc, I really appreciate how good the IT was in my old company. Everything was connected, smooth, slick and you could tell it was secure. I had very few issues and when I did, they were quickly solved. Doing this all at scale for thousands of...

This insane torture is why there are post-it notes under the keyboards.

I agree. I am posting about Linux when I use it, but have been back on windows for years now, and guess what - I’m not posting about Linux. This proves your point.

Maybe if you all started voting…? For real, dudes, you need to wake up.

What’s not to love? Then do the same with Suckerberg please, kthxbye.

Knights among toner cartridges (infosec.pub)

(Business people) speaking a language familiar and dear to them. Its portentous nouns and verbs invest ordinary events with high adventure; executives walk among toner cartridges, caparisoned like knights. We should tolerate them - every person of spirit wants to ride a white horse. -William Strunk Jr. (The Elements of Style)

I got myself a Brother scanner to digitise my paperwork. Double-sided color scans converted to PDF in just over one second per sheet. Impressive!

There’s a long listing of models to choose from. How to pick one? What are differences, benefits/drawbacks?

No bag, just a Scottevest jacket with 26 pockets. Had it for a decade. It even fits a water bottle and a laptop(!) without the being visible.

Only reason I’m not buying more/new is because they only come in black and don’t have any reflective seams or anything - bad for winter use.

Thank you for this insight! I will contact the dealer of the lift kit about those extra parts or any other recommendations.

Thanks also for helping me with the correct words for these parts! Yes I am asking about the control arms (product link), and yes the rear control arms do have eccentric adjustment bolts, but adjusting these to their minimum isn’t sufficient according to the shop, and more-eccentric bolts don’t exist.

It seems that the toe-out comes from the fact that the rear upper A-arm isn’t mounted parallel to the vehicle, but angled backward (image), so the lift causes the axle hub to lean forward into the control arm which therefore turns the wheel outward.

  • Before the lift, the rear wheels did have clearly visible negative camber, and the car was running dead straight, and turns were “on rails”.
  • Now with the lift kit, that camber is practically zero, and the rear wheels are visibly toe-out and when you now drive the car, it’s obvious that the rear axle doesn’t want to go straight; taking a turn feels like the rear wheels are actively steering opposite of the front wheels. Very effecitve for turning, but not what it’s supposed bo be :)

In the front, it’s not a problem because both toe and camber were fine before and after. Front upper and lower A-arms are mounted parallel to the vehicle (image).

America, you scare us. Sincerely, rest of the world.

You are otherwise so skilled in acute lead poisoning - maybe that could help, despite being drastically above the usual age bracket of the target demography?

By that logic, anything can become a light-emitting component when you give is some amps :-)

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, though…

USA was never a democracy, though. It’s a republic, and recent decades have shown it to become more and more the banana variant.

The United States is a federal republic of 50 states

oh no, this only ships to US+AUS. I’m in Europe, so maybe I can find some mail-forwarding service…
