I hope this gives Epic a nudge to support Dualshock better out of the box in UE. It's incredibly daft that you have to be a Sony registered dev to have support for the basic cross-platform motions, or do some horrid hack through Raw Input or SDL, or worse force your players to use DS4Windows.

When I used Unity it was trivial to support Dualshock, took me like 5 minutes to configure. It's a constant irritation to me that I can't do this easily in UE

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad I only have a DS4. Would supporting that suffice?

A very unscientific poll about light and dark modes on web sites:

@zachleat I have an over-sensitivity to light, and some light modes definitely hurt to look at. Not many, but Discord's light UI is like a flashbang.

@grumpygamer That was my first video game! I only recently learned you designed it.

Operative Systems market share from 2009 to 2023

@djlink Statcounter is not a reliable source. No popular site has it, so it can very easily be biased.

what happened to the good old "software installer will install required dependencies"?

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink @aenea It seems Unity agrees or it wouldn’t be marked as an issue.

I think we've got enough computing power now. How about we stop replacing perfectly good computers and phones every 1-2 years.

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@annika Most people have. Smartphone sales are down significantly, as hardware upgrades no longer offer tangible benefits.

As for gaming, I give it a decade until graphics technology reaches that point too. Just a matter of time, really.

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@annika Yes, this is a really annoying issue with Android. The OS makes it difficult for manufacturers to provide updates.

Some effort was made to fix it but it hasn't led to much.

Dear Steam: Use fucking standard 2FA so I can put it into 1password. WTF. Seriously. W.T.F. You made $3b last year. I'm sure you can hire a programmer to do this. It's a solved problem.

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer Valve has this weird corporate structure that basically prevents them from growing to the point where they can support their products properly.

They run three live service games, one of the biggest game stores, a hardware department with a custom operating system, all with 300 employees.
So yeah, maintenance isn't a huge thing for them.

Unexpectedly 📌

In Unity there is Script Execution Order settings, I have never used it. Are you?

In the Erra: Exordium, the internal architecture was constantly overgrown with new features and even changed several times. And so at the end of the project, a precedent appeared - to call to initialize the object after everything was loaded and the player object appeared dynamically. Unexpectedly!

I write new code 👽

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim I do self-initialization in Awake, and don't talk to other objects until Start. That way there's no need for the manual ordering. But I think it's fine to use.

I'm very conditioned from years of playing WoW to like "!" and "?" for quest icons above NPCs. Is there a better way? I haven't seen one, but that might be my WoW bias. I could go "old school" and not show anything and expect players to figure it out, but that seems cruel (I know I'd hate it).

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer In my opinion it should be more subtle. Questgivers could adopt a different pose maybe? Something that makes you think “that guy has a quest for me”.

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer Yeah sublety kinda goes out of the window when you're working with that kind of detail level.

The age old exclamation point is probably best then. Don't want to break conventions for no reason.

Hello Unity Developers from 🐸

What Unity version are you currently using?

⭐ please write why exactly this version

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim 2023.1, and I intend to upgrade further.

The game is some years away from release, and I don't want to be held back by a super outdated LTS release. HDRP is constantly improving, especially in terms of performance, so I'll be upgrading as long as it's worth the effort.

I start to lose interest in a game very quickly if it doesn’t hand me control asap after I press “New Game”, even if it takes it away again for story purposes. Let me get that game feel.

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink I'm feeling this. I quit Ghostwire Tokyo after it started another cutscene, two seconds after I got control of the character after the 10 minute intro cutscene.

I figured if that's what they designed the game like, I wasn't interested in playing it 😅

looks like unity 2023.1 is out, I wonder how stable this thing is https://unity.com/releases/editor/whats-new/2023.1.0

Robin_Van_Ee,
@Robin_Van_Ee@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink It's been good to me the past few months. But I also started the project on it.

The extra HDRP performance, DirectX12 out of beta, multithreaded shader compilation. All good reasons to be on the tech stream.
