Always found it curious that in the UK people stand on the right on escalators. Surely in a left-side-driving country it's more intuitive to stand on the left, pass on the right? (As we do here, and apparently also in Japan.)

The escalator riddle: would we all move faster and more safely if we stopped walking on them? https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/04/escalator-riddle-would-we-move-faster-more-safely-if-we-stopped-walking

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@timrichards The engineers who design escalators assume that the load on each step is static for the entire journey and perfectly balanced in the centre.

Every time someone stands on the LHS, RHS or runs up or down an escalator they are causing damage.

This is a flaw of design.

Just picked up the new iPhone from Highpoint. Jesus Christ, I'd forgotten what shopping malls are like! Especially on a Saturday. Bland identikit commercialism, could be anywhere in the world. Also a hell of a way to walk once you're inside the building. They need indoor trams. :)

Just reinstated all the filters to block posts with the words "Elon" and "Musk". God knows why people leave X to come here and endlessly talk about it. Handy that he's got such a distinctive name.

Also blocked "COVID" while I'm at it, tired of hearing about it. I swear there'll be people here in 50 years still posting about how "COVID isn't over!!!"

Salvo,

@timrichards everyone is sick of hearing about it, except those who are literal sick from it, or suffering due to damaged caused by it.

My brother recently spent a week in Hospital because a denialist came into his workplace, and maliciously coughed on everyone.

Another one of my colleagues was finally been released from two weeks hospital due to “respiratory complications”.

This strikes me as a general problem in Australia, that we build everything for summer temperatures instead of winter temperatures.

@timrichards Australian Houses just aren’t designed at all.

Those that are designed to take advantage of passive heating and cooling aren’t built to design.

We designed our house to be Zero Energy and had to fight the Site Supervisor, Tradies and Builders Warranty every step of the process.

It was a Case Study for SECCCA and the CEO of the Builder was interested, but everyone below him was completely incompetent or indifferent.

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@timrichards the 30-pin Dock connector was the best technology at the time of it introduction in 2003. It lasted 11 years before Lightning was introduced.

Apple was crucified in the press about waste because all the old 30-pin 3rd party appliances were rendered obsolete overnight.

When Lightning was introduced, it was the only technology of it class. Apple stated that it would have a 10 year life cycle before it would be replaced with a better technology.

3 years later USB-C was introduced. 2 years after that, the infighting of the USB consortium was resolved and it was a usable technology.

The EU claiming this as a victory over Apple is ridiculous. It was inevitable and Apple are just following through with what they had been planning 12+ years ago.

The problem is that Cats do not care if the thing they are killing is a Feral Indian Minor, Feral Rabbit, Feral Rat or native Wattle Bird or Dasyuride or Peramelemorph.

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@lauren
I love the two cats that dictate in our house. They are inside cats and are never let outside.
Our dog is allowed out in public as long as she is on a lead.

We are close to bushland, with birds, kangaroos and wombats. There have been echidnas “terrorising” the back yards of some of our NIMBY neighbours.

I am not a fan of the two neighbours cats that are let out constantly and have almost become feral. They piss on our front door and shit on our lawn. The council does need to do something about them.

The kangaroos are also not fans of the dogs that some idiot neighbours walk off-lead. It is very disturbing what a eastern grey bull can do to a dog that is bothering it.

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@lauren and now you know why we have such and aversion to feral cats in Australia.

When feral cats and dogs are taking out bird life, small marsupials and even larger, heavily defended monotremes like echidnas. We have to do something about them.

Kangaroos can take out feral dogs and larger possums can take out feral cats, but other than that, Joeys and Puggles are prey.

If you really want to know what cats can do to an ecosystem they are not native to, research the Stevens Island Wren.

@timrichards credit card surcharge is not to pay the credit card companies, it is to pay the taxman.

If they get paid in cash, the taxman doesn’t know about it.

I did enable 2FA. They can already contact me by SMS and LTE triangulation mean they already have my location.
