Larger vehicles, like SUVs should have to make the driver have a different class if licence... After watching someone take a 6 point turn, when it should be max 3 ... And forward and reverse at least a dozen times to park in a spot, where they are still taking two spaces ... Just saying

Absolutely, also towing trailers; there should be a Light Articulated licence, requiring professional training.
Overweight caravans are just a symptom of the problem. The problem is incompetent/untrained drivers, ignorant of what they are doing.

My controversial take is also training to have Bike Racks, Roof Racks and anything else outside the original footprint of the vehicle.

@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@timrichards this was described in Red Mars/Blue Mars/ Green Mars as a way to cool the surface of Venus and to heat the surface of Mars.

IIRC, the Corporate Authorities repurposed it to attack the Eco-Terrorists, so it was blown up, causing huge loss of life and further ecological damage.

The Science in Kim Stanley-Robinsons Mars Trilogy was accurate to what we knew in the 1990s, but is very out of date and inaccurate to what we know 30 years later.

It will be interesting to see how the science in Andy Weir’s books holds up in 20 years time.

@timrichards some retail experiences (and even government service experiences) require an App.
If you don’t have a iOS or Android smartphone, there are some things that you just can’t do.

If you have a Feature Phone, Windows Mobile Phone, PalmOS device or Mobile Linux device, Retailers and even the Government do not want to acknowledge your existence.

@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@timrichards I wish.

I’d did have a HP Touchpad. I bought it at retail from Harvey Norman the day before HP decided to cancel WebOS.

They basically sold them at cost after that, but the only way I could get the refund was if I sold it back and repurchased it.

I did that and they gave my unit to the next person on the waiting list for the clearanced units. I missed out, but I did get my 24 hours of experience with it.

Fantastic OS on aneamic hardware.

@timrichards Mastodon and (to a lesser extent) Lemmy have reintroduced some of that fun back into the Internet.

@timrichards I’m not missing Twitter at all either.
I do miss Reddit a bit because Lemmy doesn’t have the User Graf.
I ditched Facebook years ago and my social life suffered. I am on Facebook purely for one Community I am interested in and find it Hell on the Internet.
I miss being a typical Facebook user (and loathe FB even more) whenever I try to visit a Business “Website” only to find that they have linked to their FB profile and don’t actually gave a website.

I don’t mind so much when I miss out on a Family event because my stupid relatives invite FB but don’t invite each other personally.

If someone doesn’t come up with a profitable business model soon for independent journalism, we’re seriously fucked. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s not going all that well.

What I especially like are the people who bitch about firewalls and then tell you how to get around them but insist that freedom is important.

Oh, you don’t like “corporate” news? Don’t worry. Just ask your idiot cousin on Facebook. He’ll tell you everything you need to know. He’s done his own research.

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@timrichards @davidtoddmccarty
Paywalls are justifiable but they are very User Hostile.
The problem for Independent journalists is that you need to extract payment from your readers/listeners/viewers without any friction.

In order to reduce friction, you need to be in league with a payment processing system, but that removes your independence.

It has occurred to me that there are, today, adults walking the earth who have no idea that "long distance", meaning phone calls between two people who are relatively far away from each other, was expensive, and thus made rarely, and generally was once a thing. Long distance calls were special.

Long distance meant two different cities. Maybe even the nearest major city if you lived far enough away from it. International calls were a whole other thing on top of that, almost incomprehensible.

Salvo,
@Salvo@aus.social avatar

@PaulW @timrichards
Longs distance rates were calculated by how far away the recipient was, not by the area code.
Calling Sunbury from Dandenong was a STD call, even thought they were both in the 03 area code.

@timrichards one of my major pet peeves is travelling with someone who has no time management skills.

Sometimes it is because they are rebelling about perceived Wage Theft. Sometimes they want to “maximise usable time” by leaving things to the last minute.
Sometimes they get bored waiting and get side-tracked.

Big social media is great for making money and expanding the profile of celebrities, but it's otherwise millions of people in the same room screaming for attention and usually finding that the more extreme the things they scream about get, and the angrier their screams get, the more of a platform they can eke out for themselves.

Salvo,

Mainstream mega-media news services are the same and always have been.
Even in the 1990s, The Age and The Sun (and The Herald) were marketed to the Academic and the Pleabian markets for maximum frustration.
If you were a Worker and bought The Age instead of The Sun, you would have been surprised by good news, but you would have trouble with some difficult words.
If you were a Yuppie Scum and read The Sun, it would all be good news to you, but the content would be a bit low-brow.
