Being as I am now Old, I have Varifocal lenses in my glasses.
One set is set to, um... normal? And the other is for a 1m focal distance, for my computer screens. Identical frames...

Buggeerd if I can tell the difference (though there is a difference).
Can anyone advise on how to tell which is which?!

SonOfSunTzu,
@SonOfSunTzu@mastodon.social avatar

@antlerboy how do you get on with those and computer screens? E.G. from a ergonomics perspective, your screens should be in the "intermediate" not "near" sector?

I should sort out my eyesight at some point, might just wear three pairs at all times...

Can we reclaim "jugaad"? It's taken on such a pejorative meaning of late. People use "jugaad" to mean solutions that cut corners or use unethical means....no no no no.

When we used old bicycle spokes to fix a TV antenna, that was jugaad. Finding a carpool when your taxi cancels is jugaad.Stitch- binding loose pages out of a book is jugaad. Jugaad is the spirit of DIY-ing yourself out of a tough situation. Let's bring it back. I'm haryanavi and we are the people of jugaad. 😁

SonOfSunTzu,
@SonOfSunTzu@mastodon.social avatar

@Theorem_Poem @simonzerafa the positive or negative connotation of "hack" depends on who's saying it about what.

With my wikipedia level knowledge of "jugaad" it appears that it's used much more often in a positive light, and there's an emphasis on frugality, whereas for "hack" the emphasis is on cleverness, or maybe the "neatness", of the hack.

A very useful word, and an interesting concept, thank you for sharing.

If Cassandra ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra_(metaphor) ) and the Cassandra Complex applies to prophets of doom who aren't believed, what's an appropriate equivalent term for someone who advocates for positive change for improvement of a situation, rather than to avoid tragedy, but also isn't believed?

( Thinking of old conversations with @neil specifically... )

I just thought of a mashup.

Barbie and Bladerunner.

The Original Barbie hunts down rogue dolls and repackages them.

And... "Barbrunner"? "Blade-ie"?

YouTube on my Roku, connected to my TV, plays entire music videos - quite old videos - as advertisements, interupting whatever I was watching.

Do any of you have any idea why?

Is this another way for YouTube to try and get everyone to pay for YouTube premium? And further from that, will the "ad-supported" levels due on platforms such as Netflix and Disney go the same way?

Faintdreams, (edited ) to random

YouTube (via roku so on my TV) keeps trying to insert entire 3 - 4 minute music videos as ads inside the video I actually am trying to watch.

WTF ?

🤔😖😑

[please note this is not a request for info on how to block those ads via router or a pi-hole. ]

@Faintdreams how can we make it clear that I'm interested in that option, although I'm pretty sure it's impossible.

I keep hearing suggestions the recent air traffic control problem may have been caused by a “bad actor”.

I had no idea Laurence Fox was capable of such a thing…

SonOfSunTzu,
@SonOfSunTzu@mastodon.social avatar

@tony @bloor I've not seen any valid explanations of how this incident would be explained as the actions of a bad actor.

Is there a term for the opposite of Hanlon's Razor, where everything that goes wrong with anything involving computers must be attributed to the enemy of the week?

    This description of a recent scam attempt is worth reading carefully: https://social.coop/@BjornToftMadsen/110971514208956658 - and interesting example of scammers authenticating themselves to the victim with data they've created.

WHO announced that no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. However, the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 are a growing public health crisis on a global scale that demands a focused, well-resourced, and patient-centred response.”

    Anyone see that happening?
