Jen at Defend Digital Me has don’t great work exposing this. It’s the same pattern collect data for a legitimate use then before you know it the data forms part of our increasingly totalitarian surveillance state. Trust in schools will take another hit as people learn to distrust institutions https://schoolsweek.co.uk/revealed-secret-deal-to-let-benefit-fraud-squad-snoop-on-pupil-data/

EA looking to book adverts into its games - https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/ea-is-looking-at-adding-in-game-ads-in-aaa-games-well-be-very-thoughtful-as-we-move-into-that-says-ceo with the often exploitative privacy and consumer practices within the industry is there a need for digital rights campaigns to focus on the gaming industry more? What do you think?

I tried to do a Tik Tok video about how the online safety act would censor content and it was ironically throttled for mentioning categories that would be censored. I think we ought to try and use different platforms to reach people about digital rights issues but those platforms don’t make it easy to do so.

Age assurance is in the news again today. Sadly this isn’t a magic solution and will instead expose users to increased cybersecurity and privacy risks and drive under 18s towards less controlled spaces to obtain and share restricted files.

The enshitification of Tik Tok didn’t take long. It went from a platform where people have a voice to express themselves in a quick video format to people just getting a bit of fame to then flog products on Tik Tok shop.

I wonder after smoking is banned and then social media / smart phones for Children what the British state will ban next? With each ban and prohibition we loose a little bit more of our freedom. Meanwhile the ways in which Government watches and stalks us with surveillance increases.

The House of Lords are debating the new data protection and digital information bill. Currently Lord Clement-Jones is tearing into plans to water down protections for people’s personal data when it’s being transferred overseas https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/4008eeaa-16c4-42a5-bdcf-78cec311ba2f

MPs now debating whether to give themselves special exemption from surveillance powers. If only MPs were the only ones he would benefit from the requirement of a judge’s order before having their communications intercepted

Parliamentarians in the U.K. today debate the Government’s data bill. @openrightsgroup sets out the human impact of attempts to degrade the role of the ICO as our data watchdog and proposes practical wage Lords can fix this problem. https://www.openrightsgroup.org/press-releases/the-dpdi-bill-will-make-it-harder-for-people-to-get-justice-from-the-ico-warns-open-rights-group/

The LIBE committee of the European Parliament has written to the Commission with concerns that the UK’s new data protection bill will impact on the U.K. This is a big intervention from the European Parliament around the UKs plans to water down data rights https://www.openrightsgroup.org/publications/8-march-2024-letter-to-commissioner-reynders-from-libe-committee-chair-dpdi-bill/

It’s kind of ironic that the Police don’t like being filmed when they themselves are so keen on things like live facial recognition cameras and filming us https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-68533904

One thing to note in the Rochdale by-election result was it appeared that Galloway was using data to target people based on protected characteristics. This would be a breach of the data protection act. It appears to me like they had custom filters for this setup on the EARS electoral software. With growing sectarianism in British politics using data to target people like this will only increase divisions.

@IoanSaid @JamesBaker Article 9 of the U.K. GDPR gives religious beliefs special category status. The ICO guidance is quite clear that you can only target people this way with explicit consent https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/guidance-for-the-use-of-personal-data-in-political-campaigning-1/special-category-data/ so unless his campaign got explicit consent for everyone on the EARS filter then it is.

The part of the Begum case I struggle with is she was just 15 at the time. I think people are capable of getting indoctrinated at impressionable young ages then later breaking free of that indoctrination. I think society ought to provide a way back to rehabilitate extremists https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-68372112

I’m glad the Post Office scandal is getting attention but society seems broken it requires a docudrama about an issue before any action is taken.

Meta turning on E2EE for Messenger is a good move it will ensure millions of people benefit from a security and privacy feature. They have done this despite a large amount of pressure from the Home Office in the U.K. who are worried about it impacting their snooping powers.
