From Sven Biggs of Stand.Earth

While most of the province is facing extreme drought and individuals are being told to take shorter showers, the B.C. government is still allowing the fracking industry to extract and contaminate billions of litres of freshwater.

There are actions the provincial government could take right now to protect communities and freshwater from fracking: we laid out all the recommendations in our ‘Fracking With Freshwater’ report last year.

But politicians are still giving fracking companies a free pass, while putting the onus on you and me to conserve water.

With no end in sight to these extreme drought conditions, we need to put this report back on top of their inboxes.

Click below to email the B.C. government a copy of our report, and urge them to save freshwater for communities – not frackers.

Much of B.C.’s fracking patch, on Treaty 8 territories, is in a level 5 drought. That’s as bad as it gets. But while rivers run dry, farmer’s struggle to keep their crops alive, and wildfires continue to burn across the region – big gas companies are still doing business as usual by extracting huge amounts of freshwater for their fracking wells.

It’s time to end this special treatment for the oil and gas industry. No other sector is allowed to take freshwater, ...

    The problem that I had with the "field of " is that we would write a plan and consult with everybody we could and then get it through the adoption process. Then it became the Official Plan of the municipality or region or Ministry or whatever.

    Then the politicians and their friends did exactly what they wanted to all along as though the Official Plan did not exist. And there were no penalties for such behaviour.

    Sure it's unfortunate that we even need buses to complete some of the scheduled service for , but this is pretty cool:

    "Amtrak and WSDOT unveiled their first electric bus Wednesday that will transport travelers for a portion of the Amtrak Cascades route. The bus will provide transportation between Seattle and Bellingham with stops in Everett and Mount Vernon and can make the nearly 200-mile roundtrip on a single charge."

    Mike Lindblom | The Seattle Times

    Once again, Canadian readers need to be reminded that not only is our system far too much like the American's already, our politicians are working hard to privatize more of it - and ignore the bits that have already gone private. Long Read but very worthwhile and necessary.

    I just watched "Poisoned" on Netflix. It is about the food industry in the US - and, please note, Canada imports lots of chicken (158,890 metric tonnes in 2022) from the US. And bagged lettuce.

    You need to watch this. You need to know that profit and not food safety is what drives the industry. And politicians are still making sure that the industry is satisfied. Not the consumers.

    We need to talk about this heat wave

    It’s hot outside – really hot.

    Even if you’re fortunate enough to live in a region that isn’t experiencing record-breaking extreme temperatures, global headlines tell a clear story. Sanbao, a small town in China, set a national record when temperatures hit 126 Fahrenheit (52.2 Celsius). In California, Death Valley reached even higher at 128 F (53 C), nearly breaking the world record for hottest temperature ever measured.

    So the Reply Guys have arrived because Twitter is finally too shitty for even them; and/or their targets left. The migration of all my friends was fantastic, this... less so.

    It is tempting to blame The Algorithm for the horribleness on Twitter, but it didn't materialize these dudes from the rift -- it only amplified what was already there.

    Only up-to-date blocklists and strong moderation can ether them, but they will keep coming back like hydras via new instances. It's a problem.

    StephenRees,
    @StephenRees@mas.to avatar

    Is there also a limit on the number accounts you can mute - like there is onMetapixl?

    There's not shit for sports content on Mastodon yet. Big content gap. One of the weaker points.

    EDIT: I mean that the only breaking news/analysis sports content I see is from Twitter bots. Professional content, not fan chatter

    StephenRees,
    @StephenRees@mas.to avatar

    @mrcompletely I suggest you do some more research before posting like this. There is in reality a lot of sport content - far too much for my taste - and yes a lot of it can be fairly described as sh*t.

    StephenRees,
    @StephenRees@mas.to avatar

    There are increasing numbers of news outlets posting on here. Probably worth your time to see if your preferred sources of sports reporting are on here. Since Twitter seems to be down a lot lately expect more to join.

    I follow CnexNews (a bot for NYT, Reuters, Axios) Guardian (covers UK, US and Aus) NPR (bot) because I want reliable Real News - they have lots of sports reporting between them.

    1/ The biggest tip I'd like to give newcomers to the Fediverse (aside from the standard stuff like 'fill out your bio/pick an avi') is this: don't expect it to be perfect.

    Yes, you will periodically run into people who are annoying/rude here too. They're everywhere. It's part of life. Yes, the way it works will sometimes frustrate you. Every platform is the same in that sense. Yes, you have to put time into getting established & learning how to use it. All communities are the same there too.

    The Myth of Increased Transit Violence
    Crime rates are actually down. But workers struggle to deal with the effects of social problems.

    News reports raised fears about safety on public transportation. Premier David Eby promised action. Police increased patrols.

    In reality, violent crime rates on public transportation in Metro Vancouver have declined in recent years.
