MY MORNING JACKET
Z
2020 U.S. 2xLP reissue
Purple vinyl

The job ATO did on this reissue is phenomenal. It sounds incredible, and I’d have to imagine that it’s the definitive version to own on vinyl.

Much like my previous Wilco post of YHF, this is my cutoff point with MMJ. Everything that follows this is a huge letdown for me, but Z is so astonishingly great, anything would be.
This album paired with It Still Moves, and I’m pretty much good to go on MMJ.

THE POLICE
Synchronicity
1983 Canada pressing

Today seems like a good day for some Police.
I got into a discussion with a friend yesterday about bands who released their most successful album last, and then broke up. There are a bunch of examples, but none of their swan songs were quite as massive as THIS.
It still amazes me when I come across people who have owned this on vinyl since it came out, and are unaware that most of their copies are purple.

RADIOHEAD
In Rainbows
2007 Europe pressing

As a fan of Radiohead right from the jump (MINUS Hail To The Thief), this was the last Radiohead album that left me fully satisfied.
I still believe it’s their last truly GREAT album.
I still loathe The King Of Limbs, and find A Moon Shaped Pool far too disjointed & laborious, even by Radiohead standards.
This is so satisfying front to back; enough flashes of the old Radiohead I fell in love with.

TOM WAITS
Mule Variations
2023 U.S. remastered reissue
180g Furnace pressing

A muddy, earthy masterpiece of epic proportions.
There’s art on here that is SO quintessential Tom; like the bonkers “What’s He Building?” & “Filipino Box Spring Hog”.
I bought this in ‘99 immediately after hearing Big In Japan, & since then, this album has remained on my list of 3 fave Tom albums.
It’s also a go-to for me in the Fall season.
A perfect piece of art.

PRINCE
1999
1982 Canada 2xLP pressing

Today, I’m gonna party like it’s… well, you know.

My older sister might have been the biggest Prince fan to ever walk the Earth.
This was the first Prince album I ever heard, as she used to play this ad nauseam around the house in the early .
Then, Purple Rain started to fall from the sky on all of us, & Prince became the head of our household for the next 8 years.
The world is far less interesting without him.

THE WONDERS
That Thing You Do! / Dance With Me Tonight
1996 U.S. PROMO 7”
45rpm

I saw somebody recently post that this entire soundtrack was getting a reissue soon, and was reminded that I had the 7” single for it somewhere.
I bought this a looong time ago simply because it’s one of my all time favorite movies, and I love Adam Schlesinger.
None of my are registered on Discogs, so once I found it, was shocked to see it goes for over $100 CAD.

NIRVANA
With The Lights Out
2004 U.S. 3xCD/1xDVD Box Set

One last birthday gift for your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape.

I already “had” this, but it was absolutely unplayable. The audio discs were trashed from years of travel & car play, and from people borrowing it over the years.
A friend of mine spotted a pristine used copy, & thought it would make a good birthday gift for your old pal, here.
First thing I did aftef getting it was fire the old one into the sun.

NICK DRAKE
Five Leaves Left
2013 U.S. remastered reissue

My wife and I don’t share very much common ground when it comes to music.
However, Nick Drake is someone we both love and adore, and my wife and I have shared many a wonderful night together with Nick’s music as the backdrop.
Tonight, we have this and a lovely Italian dinner.
This remaster sounds wonderful. Just a wonderful sounding issue of a stunningly gorgeous album.

NEW WORLD ELECTRONIC CHAMBER ENSEMBLE
Switched On Beatles
1974 Canada Gatefold

There were tons of these Switched On records released, all with varying degrees of effectiveness.
THIS is awesome, because it highlights the best thing about ; the music.
The instrumentation.

And holy shit, does this album GROOVE.
It’s excellent, mostly focuses on later-day adventurous Beatles.
Plus, theres a guy wearing a studded denim jacket & a belt buckle in the gatefold.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
Flood
2023 Czech Republic reissue

TMBG has always been feel good comfort music to me; reminding me of a very joyful run of years in my life.
I owe every ounce of the love I have for them to the cartoon Tiny Toons Adventures, which I was obsessed with as a kid, and kind of still am.

This album, along with Lincoln, is impossibly good.
Unique, inventive, and singularly TMBG.
I love them forever.

Just had an uncomfortable conversation with a brash and ignorant 22 year old. Tried to help him out, but he’s 22.

Look, kid. It's about everyone. Perhaps we should live in a society where the things that happen to people are based on merit, but we don't. Your actions have consequences; sometimes they're fair, sometimes they're not, and once you put a chain of events in motion, you have to accept that.
Fighting against it will end in nothing but bad news for you, kid.
Good luck going forward.

DEF LEPPARD
Hysteria
1987 Canada pressing

I gave my 14 year old son the pick of our breakfast spin this morning before school, and THIS was his choice.
When I asked why he picked that, he said he saw a “weird dude” in a Def Leppard shirt working at West 49 at the mall. 😂
Fair enough.

He’d never heard a note of DL before, and his synopsis of Hysteria was nothing more than “just ok”.

He liked Love Bites but called Pour Some Sugar On Me “asinine”. 😂

Hey… here’s a quick question.

Ummm…. was THIS really necessary?
And does it really warrant a $40 CAD price tag.

Let’s get a fucking grip on ourselves, people. This is completely out of hand.

DADA
Dizz Knee Land / Posters
1993 UK 7” single

One of my all time favorite songs!!! The complete album is borderline impossible to find (only ‘92 pressings from Brazil and Spain were pressed), so until somebody comes to their senses and reissues it, this single (along with the one for “Dim”) will have to do.
It’s a great album. Somebody needs to get on that. It’s not like I.R.S. is some super obscure label.

SMASHING PUMPKINS
Siamese Dream
1993 U.S. pressing

The ORIGINAL original presses of this were three different coloured 2xLP variants (orange, pink, purple).

Approximately 4000 copies were pressed on BLACK in 93, 95, 97, & 04, with 1000 units pressed each time, using the original plates. No repress markers or indicators in the dead wax show any difference.
I bought this in 93, so mine is the first run of black.
Still in flawless shape after all these years.

Time for another fun round of…
WEIRD SHIT YOU FIND INSIDE OF A RECORD JACKET.

In the past year, I’ve come across 3-4 newspaper related things in records Ive bought.
THIS was inside a Switched On Beatles record from a Salvation Army today.
It is from the April 21, 1984 edition of the Globe & Mail.
There’s a feature on a newly blowing up Weird Al Yankovic, as well as one on a Toronto luthier named Linda Manzer. And some schlub named Pat Metheny.

PAUL SIMON
Graceland
1986 Canada pressing

Ive mentioned my late mother on here numerous times in the past.

We had a horrible, combative relationship & did not get along.
Musically, there were very few things we saw eye to eye on, but Graceland was a bit of common ground (along with Sinead OConnor).

What Simon did with Graceland was (& still is) remarkable. After an awful lull in his career, it was indeed a reminder that hes a GOAT transcendent songwriter.

DEFTONES
White Pony
2020 Europe reissue

A sonic masterpiece.
I rip through the DEFTONES discography start to finish once every couple of years, and I always get excited when I get to White Pony.
I think this was when they separated themselves from all of the shitty bands they were being lumped in with, and showed the world that they weren’t just tenants of that horrible invented genre.
Just such a satisfying heavy (and nuanced) record.

PAPAYA
Papaya
1976 U.S. pressing

A bit of a different mode for a laid back Sunday.
I found this Papaya record in a thrift store about five years back. I didn’t know what it was (I assumed some kind of jazz or something tropical), but bought it because it looked interesting enough and for that AWESOME looking label. Sometimes, you just kinda know when it’ll be worth it.
A bit of a flavor. Just warm, excellent vibes for a day like today.

This is ASININE.

The Recording Industry is a winded, dying dinosaur on life support. This lawsuit is incredibly petty. It says a lot about what kind of financial shape the “business” is in, how little that business cares about art and preservation of that art.

They lived like greedy, fat hogs for decades, now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Welcome to your irrelevance.

THE SONS OF CHAMPLIN
Loosen Up Naturally
1969 2xLP Canada pressing

Is there anybody out there familiar with this record? One of those San Fran bands from the 60s.
I bought this because it had a cool cover and looked kinda trippy/psych-rock-ish.

Not quite sure how I feel about it yet.
Some of it is psychedelic, but there is quite the soul vibe here, which I was not expecting.
Bill Champlin joined the band Chicago in 1981, apparently.

I’m off on a ten day excursion to the desert with my family. Before I head out, I wanted to share this thought with you all, simply because it’s on my mind.

Move on and stop using substitutes for your own grief. While it may be hard to grieve because the emotions it brings are too strong, it is how we heal.
We have to deal with the heartache and trauma head on. Otherwise it builds up inside us and makes us lonely, bitter and nihilistic.

Your friendly neighborhood Ape loves you.
