I'm Enjoying the parts more without Jason on the bass. It's just a drone but it's seems to have been remastered to bring it out and hasn't done a great job. One is the best track so far.

@Whiskeyomega @vinylrecords the worst produced, recorded, mixed and mastered album of all time.
It was absolutely shameful for a “professional” band.

TheVinylApe,
@TheVinylApe@masto.ai avatar

@RVLara23 @TheVinylApe @Whiskeyomega @vinylrecords attempting to be raw and garage-y is one thing.
But drums that sound like they were recorded inside a tin can and a complete lack of bass is another.

Even indie garage bands who record on their own in their own basements back in the 80s managed to get better sound. Those songs were so good. It’s a shame they’ve never been done true justice.
This is a conversation I’ve had many times with many people.

@Whiskeyomega quick question man…

I don’t like having a character limit, and I notice things that people are on like universeodon that don’t seem to have any limits.
How do I switch from the one that I’m on to one without character limits?

KEI OGURA
[title unknown because I don’t speak Japanese]
1976 pressing

Saw this in a clearance bin today, & had to have it.
I had no idea what it was. Didnt care.
When you see a cover like THIS, you hand over $ 2 & ask questions later.
I mean, THAT is fucking beautiful.

The artists name is KEI OGURA and the music is sort of orchestral folk pop? I kinda dig it, but the cover’s heading into a frame.
Anyone speak Japanese? Would like to know the album name.

This is the internet we need back in our lives.

That’s like using a BetaMax machine.

@agustinharo @vinylrecords @old_hippie 👍 very nice.
We have a customer who is a rabid GD fan and he just sold us a huge chunk of his collection. Everything from 67-81 was in there, as well as some very expensive box sets. I asked him “Larry why are you getting rid of all your Dead?”

He said “I’m not. These are all duplicates.”

😐

TheVinylApe,

@agustinharo @vinylrecords @old_hippie you have NO idea.

He regularly rocks a shirt he had made with a picture of him and Jerry Garcia on it taken in the 80s on it.

He may also live in a house made of wheat. We’re still trying to verify that, though. 😂

LED ZEPPELIN
And IV To Go
1987 U.S. Unofficial Bootleg

Found this in a thrift a few years back. It wasn’t even in with the records, as I found it in a box of old magazines.

The label says “American Heroes” as the artist, and falsely identifies the label as “Ugly Duckling Music”.

Musically, it’s got a few variations of Stairway To Heaven on it, a few random instrumentals, a Black Dog rehearsal tape, as well as No Quarter.

Cool artifact, but a rough listen.

Father/son music night, and the boy got to pick tonight’s two albums while we play Ticket To Ride.

Again… HIS choice.
And quite the interesting choice it was. He chose Waxwork Records’ reissues of the first two Friday The 13th .

He’s never seen any of the films, and he won’t ever. He hates horror movies. However, he loves good music. And he recognizes just how cool Harry Manfredini’s scores are.

#NowReading - the reboot of sound collector audio review, large format #print zine i wasn't hep enough to read in the '00s. nothin' but writing about not-new albums (#jazz, #indie, #rock, #pop, #punk, more), long & longer form by record review standards, short by essay standards. many feel (in nice ways) like hyper-condensed 33 1/3 books. not all to my taste, but all passionate. beautiful antidote to the #pitchfork etc. bullshit. free at record stores: https://soundcollector.com/stockists @vinylrecords

TheVinylApe,
@TheVinylApe@masto.ai avatar

@bourgwick @vinylrecords Pitchfork is everything that’s wrong with how people talk about music.

I have no respect for them or anybody associated with them.

TheVinylApe,
@TheVinylApe@masto.ai avatar

@carloshr @bourgwick @vinylrecords

1/2:

where to begin….

Let’s start with they’re pretentious.

They delete reviews, change reviews, automatically give bad reviews to bands that are popular (when they choose to do so). They will also, on purpose, review albums they normally wouldn’t, just got the sole purpose of shitting on them.

They listen to an album once (if that), review it two days later, which is a terrible way to truly assess something.

TheVinylApe,
@TheVinylApe@masto.ai avatar

@carloshr @bourgwick @vinylrecords

2/2:

I know these things to be fact because I have a friend I’ve known for 25 years who used to work there, and he left because he no longer wanted to be associated with how they talk about art and music.

If you like them, that’s fine. I’m just telling you they’re not what they seem or claim to be.

TheVinylApe,

@Whiskeyomega @vinylrecords @waxandbeans a pretty good record, but other than First Impressions Of Earth, probably my least favorite. They got far more interesting to me after that.
The FIRST record though? As perfect of a debut record as one could hope for.
Somehow, it sounds even better today. So fresh.

Many moons ago, I used to do what I do here on IG.

I used to use Funko figures & pick one that went with the record I was posting.

This was the day Chris Cornell died, May 18, 2017.

That was a terrible day, & it was a sadness I hadn’t felt since 1994.

I just remember arranging them like this, as a bit of my own memorial to a man who had effected my life greatly.

That day reminded me that people who bring solace to millions… have pain of their own.

NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
2009 U.S. Reissue

Although I find it’s mythology and importance to be greatly exaggerated, it’s a pretty fantastic and unique record.
It’s been overanalyzed (to hilarious effect), but you can’t ignore his singular it was for the time it came out.
It was also a uniquely RECORDED album, and I think the production and overall sound of it adds to the mythology.
Nothing sounded like it.
Just a pure piece of art.

INXS
Kick
1987 U.S. pressing

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve listened to THIS.

One of my older sisters was a huge INXS fan in the , and it was through her that I heard not only THIS album, but Listen Like Thieves also.
This has a bunch of hit singles, and is probably their best 80s record, but I grew into a much bigger fan of the albums, particularly Welcome To Wherever You Are, which is their best record PERIOD.
But no denying how great this one is.

TheVinylApe,

@billyjoebowers they didn’t disappear, but the thing that made them GREAT did.

That was Michael Hutchence.

You can’t find a new singer by having a televised game show and expect it to be even remotely the same.

Michael was 95% of the magic. That’s an unarguable point. He, and his voice, did shit to people.
They SHOULD have quit immediately after.
After, they just became an average run of the mill pop band.

THE ROLLING STONES
Let It Bleed
1979 Canada reissue

Forever and always my favorite record.

Great opening track, a great closing track, and one of my two personal favorite Stones songs in “You’ve Got The Silver” (the other being “Salt Of The Earth” from Beggars Banquet).

This pressing has a bit of a goofy label.
STONES is actually singular, & the XZAL number at the bottom is upside down & missing a parentheses.
Bang up quality control.
