AIR
Moon Safari
2015 Europe reissue

An absolute flawless classic. One of my favorite records ever.

This particular pressing sounds amazing. I A/B’d this against a CD copy and this won HANDILY. It’s one of the best sounding records in my collection period.
Beth Hirsch’s vocals on All I Need sound stellar.
And of course… who doesn’t like a little Sexy Boy?
For me, 1997 was all about THIS and OK COMPUTER.

SLOWDIVE
Slowdive
2017 U.S. pressing

Slowdive has followed in the line of Mission Of Burma, Dinosaur Jr.,& Quicksand, in that their “reunion” records were just as good, if not better, than their previous classic works.

In the case of Slowdive, this was the first in 22 years, & is STELLAR.
The same can be said of their latest album as well, which I also recently posted, & am still taking in.
Both albums make me appreciate the other that much more.

JACKIE MITTOO
Let's Put It All Together
1978 Canada reissue

One more from the great Jackie Mittoo as I wait for the swelling in my eye to go down.
The five song run here from Ram Jam to The Rattler is amazing.
JM records aren’t all that common to stumble upon.
Even reissues like this one go for about 40 CAD.

BILLIE HOLIDAY
Billie Holiday’s Greatest Hits
1980 Canada reissue

An exhausted, quiet Friday night.
I’m absolutely spent, and have nothing left to give today.

I needed something for my soul before crashing out for some well deserved rest, and this was just lying on top of a pile of records in the corner that I’ve bought over the past few weeks.
Oh yes.
That’ll do just fine and then some.
Soothe my soul, Lady Day.

TOM WAITS
Bone Machine
2023 Europe remastered reissue

I finally got my copy of this today!
Bone Machine was a pivotal missing piece from my library.
As a kid, when I first discovered the art and music of it was THIS and Rain Dogs, over and over again.
Mule Variations was released shortly thereafter, and it was then when I worked my way backwards through his stunningly unique catalog.
Bone Machine and Rain Dogs will always be my 1 and 1a.

RADIOHEAD
In Rainbows
2007 Europe pressing

As a fan of Radiohead right from the jump (MINUS Hail To The Thief), this was the last Radiohead album that left me fully satisfied.
I still believe it’s their last truly GREAT album.
I still loathe The King Of Limbs, and find A Moon Shaped Pool far too disjointed & laborious, even by Radiohead standards.
This is so satisfying front to back; enough flashes of the old Radiohead I fell in love with.

ELVIS COSTELLO
My Aim Is True
1977 Canada pressing

It’s Friday.

Welcome To (the end of) The Working Week! 😂

Still such a wonderful album. I’ve met Elvis on several occasions, and a better dude you will never meet.
His wife, being from the island, has been to our store many times, and they’re just great people. I keep trying to work up the courage to ask her to get Elvis to sign this for my wall, but I think I’d rather not.

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Metal For Breakfast
1984 Canada pressing

Was in the mood for a killer comp of hard rock and metal. A mix tape if you will; for those over the age of 40.
Anvil, Ozzy, Priest, Quiet Riot.
Oh yeah, baby.
Orange juice not included.

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS
Kaya
1983 Canada reissue

Sometimes, you just need to make the executive decision that Bob Marley needs to be playing; at ANY given time, at any moment’s notice.

This is that time.

Haven’t heard Kaya in a long time.
I’m not sure how you can have Bob Marley playing and not feel… GOOD.
You know what I mean?

DEF LEPPARD
Hysteria
1987 Canada pressing

I gave my 14 year old son the pick of our breakfast spin this morning before school, and THIS was his choice.
When I asked why he picked that, he said he saw a “weird dude” in a Def Leppard shirt working at West 49 at the mall. 😂
Fair enough.

He’d never heard a note of DL before, and his synopsis of Hysteria was nothing more than “just ok”.

He liked Love Bites but called Pour Some Sugar On Me “asinine”. 😂

PRINCE
1999
1982 Canada 2xLP pressing

Today, I’m gonna party like it’s… well, you know.

My older sister might have been the biggest Prince fan to ever walk the Earth.
This was the first Prince album I ever heard, as she used to play this ad nauseam around the house in the early .
Then, Purple Rain started to fall from the sky on all of us, & Prince became the head of our household for the next 8 years.
The world is far less interesting without him.

NICK DRAKE
Five Leaves Left
2013 U.S. remastered reissue

My wife and I don’t share very much common ground when it comes to music.
However, Nick Drake is someone we both love and adore, and my wife and I have shared many a wonderful night together with Nick’s music as the backdrop.
Tonight, we have this and a lovely Italian dinner.
This remaster sounds wonderful. Just a wonderful sounding issue of a stunningly gorgeous album.

TOM WAITS
Mule Variations
2023 U.S. remastered reissue
180g Furnace pressing

A muddy, earthy masterpiece of epic proportions.
There’s art on here that is SO quintessential Tom; like the bonkers “What’s He Building?” & “Filipino Box Spring Hog”.
I bought this in ‘99 immediately after hearing Big In Japan, & since then, this album has remained on my list of 3 fave Tom albums.
It’s also a go-to for me in the Fall season.
A perfect piece of art.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
Flood
2023 Czech Republic reissue

TMBG has always been feel good comfort music to me; reminding me of a very joyful run of years in my life.
I owe every ounce of the love I have for them to the cartoon Tiny Toons Adventures, which I was obsessed with as a kid, and kind of still am.

This album, along with Lincoln, is impossibly good.
Unique, inventive, and singularly TMBG.
I love them forever.

NIRVANA
With The Lights Out
2004 U.S. 3xCD/1xDVD Box Set

One last birthday gift for your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape.

I already “had” this, but it was absolutely unplayable. The audio discs were trashed from years of travel & car play, and from people borrowing it over the years.
A friend of mine spotted a pristine used copy, & thought it would make a good birthday gift for your old pal, here.
First thing I did aftef getting it was fire the old one into the sun.

THE WONDERS
That Thing You Do! / Dance With Me Tonight
1996 U.S. PROMO 7”
45rpm

I saw somebody recently post that this entire soundtrack was getting a reissue soon, and was reminded that I had the 7” single for it somewhere.
I bought this a looong time ago simply because it’s one of my all time favorite movies, and I love Adam Schlesinger.
None of my are registered on Discogs, so once I found it, was shocked to see it goes for over $100 CAD.

Hey… here’s a quick question.

Ummm…. was THIS really necessary?
And does it really warrant a $40 CAD price tag.

Let’s get a fucking grip on ourselves, people. This is completely out of hand.

Punks think they’re individuals.

Yet, they all wear the same uniform, listen to the same music…
They all look the same, sound the same… talk the same.
Isn’t that hilarious?
Isn’t that just fucking hilarious?

MY MORNING JACKET
Z
2020 U.S. 2xLP reissue
Purple vinyl

The job ATO did on this reissue is phenomenal. It sounds incredible, and I’d have to imagine that it’s the definitive version to own on vinyl.

Much like my previous Wilco post of YHF, this is my cutoff point with MMJ. Everything that follows this is a huge letdown for me, but Z is so astonishingly great, anything would be.
This album paired with It Still Moves, and I’m pretty much good to go on MMJ.

The Ape’s journey home begins now.

Thank you to all the lovely people of Whistler (and the many people I encountered on the road there) for all their hospitality and wonderfulness.

Will be back at my jungle chateau in about 12 hours, with a bunch of from my travels.

Man.
Did I ever need that vacation. I haven’t touched a guitar in 9 days.

I’m off on a ten day excursion to the desert with my family. Before I head out, I wanted to share this thought with you all, simply because it’s on my mind.

Move on and stop using substitutes for your own grief. While it may be hard to grieve because the emotions it brings are too strong, it is how we heal.
We have to deal with the heartache and trauma head on. Otherwise it builds up inside us and makes us lonely, bitter and nihilistic.

Your friendly neighborhood Ape loves you.

This is ASININE.

The Recording Industry is a winded, dying dinosaur on life support. This lawsuit is incredibly petty. It says a lot about what kind of financial shape the “business” is in, how little that business cares about art and preservation of that art.

They lived like greedy, fat hogs for decades, now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Welcome to your irrelevance.

MILES DAVIS
Kind Of Blue
2015 Europe reissue

The perfect record for a Friday night in.
Football on mute, a little bourbon, and Miles.
Perfect.
Not much to say about this masterpiece that hasn’t been said already.
Excuse me, Miss, do you mind if I got all up in your ?
