The most crushing thought that I keep having these days is that they'll get away with it. The Ntanyhus and P*tins will live comfortably to a ripe old age and maybe history books will look at them disparagingly but there will be no accountability for their actions in this life. They plunder and murder hundreds and receive the mildest of wrist-slaps and carry on.

Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

Theorem_Poem,
@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@forsythec thanks. I still do like Sherlock Holmes! I just like being equipped with the knowledge that any person of colour in those books was portrayed in a racist manner. Same with Agatha Christie's work.... I still read her books, but the Indian people that she's describing are not realistic whatsoever.

@seachanger old people saying that young people don't know history or math or whatever is never not funny.......
Aunty. You were supposed to teach them. Your generation was supposed to put systems in place that taught the children. If they don't know, whose fault is it?

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Bangalore. I very much like it here. Of course it has its problems, but they are no bigger or weirder than the problems that other Indian cities have as well.
I grew up in north India, in a state called Haryana (one of my friends jokingly calls it the Indian Texas - he's not entirely wrong). Fell in love with a Bangalore man. Shifting to south India made me realize how oppressively misogynist my birthplace is. In Bangalore, I don't have to look over my shoulder all the time.

Gen X (and elder millennial) sweeties on my timeline - I know y'all don't feel seen - but I've been mentored and supported by you my whole life. You were my kind boss, my cool cousin, my favourite internet guide. You showed me how to rebel against a stupid system, you showed me how to trust the person next to me while never trusting "the man". Your little millennial sister loves you 💛

Direct Instruction folks find it difficult to accept constructivist approaches because it's just really hard to create person-specific dialogues with a student which can lead them to discover the idea behind the concept by themselves, for really complex concepts

https://mastodon.social/@impactology/112366258791651451

And I think that has to do with how those concepts are presented in textbooks, without any context.

It's strange to me when I see people get upset about people doing good deeds, and posting it online.

"They're just doing it for attention!"

Yeah, so what? I'd much rather see people doing nice things for attention, than the people who do mean pranks or wasting food. A good deed is still good, even if it's done for the wrong reasons.

Theorem_Poem,

@RickiTarr them screaming on the internet about other people "doing it for attention" is also attention-seeking. 🤷‍♀️

On the way to work today I was mentally cataloguing the litter I saw in the streets and working out when some of it went from high-value materials to literal rubbish.

The most obvious were all the Aluminium cans, just dumped, but ~180 years ago would have been worth more than their weight in gold.

Theorem_Poem,
@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@Dtl modern day soda cans are lined with plastic.... we can't even get that aluminum back anymore :/

Theorem_Poem,

@Dtl right, looked it up - most plastic lined cans are recycled by melting off that inner layer with acid. Just needs a bit of fume protection. My bad. @cunobaros
