There is no line between "free speech" and "hate speech"

I do not stand for hate speech therefor there is no such thing as "free speech" on instances I host

It doesn't matter what the laws in your country say, if one choses to be on an instance I host one has to comply with those "laws" 😉

If people want absolute free speech they should host their own servers or join other platforms that won't be named :blobcatgiggle:

@stux

When you write that you will not stand for hate speech on your instances, does that mean hate speech from other instances is blocked too?

I am trying to understand why I do not see the hate speech that folks on other instances call out.

Recently I saw a post from a person that said he was being attacked but when I expanded the threads, I did not see the pile-on?

I believe these folks but I cannot see what they are experiencing and I've wondered why? 🤔

Little tip for the ♥️

Try to use media descriptions wherever possible. This is mostly meant for people that are using screen readers for browsing the Fediverse.

Screen readers cannot see what’s on an image, video or GIF so that’s why we describe what’s on it and use that as ‘alt text’ so everyone can enjoy it!

Totorose,
@Totorose@mstdn.social avatar

@stux

I saw a tip that alt text allows more characters than a toot so I've been trying to add extras in my alt text, a little bonus for those who read it.

I've found others who do this and it's delightful!

My opinions:

  1. I would like to see posts on my Mastodon timeline.

  2. I would like to see posts too.

Why? Because I do not want to interact on Threads or Bluesky.

There are accounts there that I would like to read. It would be nice to see the posts in one place.

Thank you, @stux for making this corner of the Fediverse so nice and cozy!

I appreciate you! 😺

"Heat pumps don't work in the cold"

Context: This is data from my mom and dad's new cold climate heat pump. While the system has been calling for heat continuously during this time, it has only needed to kick on the backup resistive heating in the deepest of cold, and even then only for a couple of hours overnight.

For those of you who speak metric, -13°F is -25°C, and their desired setpoint is 21°C

Totorose,
@Totorose@mstdn.social avatar

@TechConnectify

It would be helpful to see the costs, too.

I have a 3 ton Bosch heatpump but it's too expensive to let it run as the primary heat source below 35F. It's capable of heating when it's -4F.

This is my first winter with this system. The secondary heat is a 60,000 btu Trane.

I've been tracking daily costs of electricity, gas, high and low temperatures, trying to pinpoint the temperature where it's a good compromise between electric and gas costs.

Totorose,
@Totorose@mstdn.social avatar

@TechConnectify

I understand they have no choice but electric. It must be very expensive though.

When my new systems were installed last March, it was set to aux heat at 30F and then I got a $300 ComEd bill. That was a hard reality for me. Perhaps others?

I have accepted a compromise solution based on ComEd and Nicor costs.

Am I saving money with the Bosch? I can definitely answer, yes.

Am I using less gas? Also, yes.

@lowqualityfacts I'm sure it's moosi

That's what I was taught at Illinois Tech! The student newspaper was called Technology News except for April's edition of Technology Moose. Cartoon moose appeared in many articles and were referred to as "moosi"

Wish I'd saved some of those!

Today let's spread the love!

@ someone in the comments who has made your Mastodon experience better, a little explanation as to why would be awesome too! You are welcome to do more than one.

I followed these folks when I was on Twitter and was delighted to find them on Mastodon. They are funny and make me smile.

Yesterday I've changed a few server plans to newer versions that are a little cheaper then the previous (about 80 bucks in total)

Also cleaned up older remote media that can be redownloaded when needed ofc :cat_hug_triangle:

So next months server bill be a lot less hopefully❤️

For the upcoming bill we're still a little short, if you can help, please

It's stupid hot out today (pushing 100°F/~38°C) and my strategy of using the house and its contents as a thermal battery is being pushed to the limit.

But, it's still working! My air conditioner has been off for 8 hours and I'm still decently comfortable. 76°F is 24.4°C

Totorose,
@Totorose@mstdn.social avatar

@TechConnectify

I am curious if this strategy saves money?

I'm in a 70+ years old house but have a new 20 SEER heat pump for ~1450 sq ft with an ecobee maintaining 75F during the day.

ComEd lets me see my costs by day (and hour) and when I zero in on Aug 23 (Hi 99F/Lo 77F) it cost $3.42. This is not imo, excessive when my average daily cost is about $1.05 for electricity on a "normal" day.

Totorose,
@Totorose@mstdn.social avatar

@TechConnectify

I considered setting the ecobee to 60F at 10 pm to see (1) how long it would take the Bosch to attain this temp and (2) how much it would cost to do so and (3) how long would it keep the house <=75F/24C on a hot day but the weather is being pleasant and isn’t cooperating.

I just pulled the Aug 24 data from ComEd and it cost $3.81 for that 100F/37C day. Wish ComEd would tell me if that was good or bad though (I think it's good.)
