Part of the Antonine Wall near Rough Castle, two miles west of the centre of Falkirk. The Antonine Wall was built from AD142 to 144 and ran for 37 miles (60km) from Bo'ness on the River Forth to Old Kilpatrick on the River Clyde. This is of course not the Antonine Wall. Instead, it is part of Hadrian’s Wall near Willowford Farm in Cumbria. Happy Gowk Day or April Fools' Day!

A real superstar amongst Scottish castles, this is Ballindalloch Castle on Speyside. Its origins date back to a Z-plan defensive tower house that was built here, probably in 1546, and it's been home to one family ever since. David Stewart, 1st Duke of Rothesay, son of King Robert III and heir to the Scottish crown, was murdered by his uncle, Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany, at Falkland Palace in Fife on 26 March 1402. Stanley Mills, built to harness the tremendous power of the River Tay to process cotton on a site north of Perth in the late 1700s. 738 years ago today. King Alexander III died in a fall from his horse near Kinghorn in Fife on 19 March 1286. His death ended a golden age in Scottish history and caused a crisis of succession that led to the Wars of Independence with England. This is the monument built near where he died. It's well worth going to Achmelvich, north of Lochinver in Sutherland, for the magnificent setting and the beaches. Fifty-five years ago today, on 17 March 1969, the lifeboat from Longhope in Orkney capsized with the loss of all eight crew.
