This week I've been mainly reading, no. 114.

For a book group I've just re-read (for the 4th time?) Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep (1939/1970) (and watched the 1946 film version, one of my favourites). You can see how influential Chandler has been, but this time watching movie & reading the book at the same time, I was struck by the differences in the plotting, with the film somehow a little more satisfying than the book, but the book remains a classic of 'hard-boiled' fiction!

@Strandjunker Hard to argue against. I still love that in the 1980s, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie did a skit parodying “It’s a Wonderful Life” where Murdoch gets to see what the world would be like without him.

It turns out to be a peaceful, lovely place.

I’ve got a lot of complicated and ambivalent thoughts about self-diagnosis, particularly wrt .

The short version is that yes, in the real world there HAS to be a place for it. If we had a halfway-decent health care system, it would be different. In our reality, excluding people who can’t get a medical dx is racist, classist, etc.

But. When mental health conditions get publicized, their meanings become colloquial.

My kids made up a game called playing "Alexa" which is where they intentionally misunderstand me and tell me "sorry, I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. Please try again in your Alexa app"

The main feature of the Alexa, to them, is that it never works.

@goatsarah Tennant didn’t say the line, but he is pretty awesome on trans issues. The whole thing exploded because of a t-shirt he was wearing. In addition, he’s been wearing a nonbinary pride pin to all his public appearances for some time, apparently in support of one of his kids.

Tl;dr: is not for us weirdos, queerdos, freaks, or sex workers. I’ve had to deal with the BIZARRE decency standards on IG for years, and I’m not masochistic enough to do more of it.

This is something I’m thinking about right now; I’ve always existed paycheck to paycheck, and I’m very bad at being able to do cover letters, resumes, and interviews. It takes an incredible amount of mental exertion to do any of it.

And it makes me so, so fucking scared of what’s going to happen to me when I’m too old to do the paycheck-to-paycheck thing any more.
