Oh look, a Linux Foundation-stewarded Redis Fork led by an Amazon Engineer.

This was – of course – completely unforeseeable to all involved*.

There's something profoundly amazing about the fact that I've been able to work in computers for 25 years and still basically know almost nothing about how networking actually works.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Same -- and also for computers in general. This is so different from, say, construction or gardening or electrical wiring, it's silly.

Sure, I understand electrical current and how you can use it to make NAND gates, and I can model complex relationships and draw 3D pictures, but every time I learn more about everything in between I just uncover more dimensions I do not understand and yet those details affect the work I do.

How I used to type before becoming a Python core developer:

  • python
  • PEP-8
  • Pypi
  • print statements

vs after:

  • Python

  • PyPI
  • print functions

@mariatta How about "Pycon" versus "PyCon US"? :)

The book discourse seems to have moved to other sites than Masto, so I nearly missed this myself: khōréō is raising funds for its fourth year: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/khoreo/khoreo-year-4

If you're into speculative fiction, or just interested in different types of writing, khōréō has an amazing track record in just three years, and it's well worth the $20 for the four issues. (Also I would be sad if they didn't make their funding goal.)

🤔 Python friends, if my project will only ever use Python 3.11 or 3.12, can I drop the "from future import annotations" which linter tools tell me must exist everywhere?

I'm not looking for best practice advice because this is a Django + Docker app that can use either Python 3.11 or 3.12.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@hugovk @webology Well, actually: https://discuss.python.org/t/pep-649-deferred-evaluation-of-annotations-tentatively-accepted/21331/43

(We're waiting on the actual implementation of PEP 649 before making firm claims that it will be done in 3.13 though...)

After 2 years and introducing the concept of tiered platform support to , has reached tier 2!

https://peps.python.org/pep-0011/#tier-2

I'm obviously not done w/ all of this, but at least I don't have a moving target for testing stability.

And for those that care, this is for WASI 0.1 (nee preview 1) w/ WASI SDK 20 and Wasmtime running -Spreview2=n; WASI 0.2 support is on the TODO list.

Yhg1s,

@glyph @brettcannon Moving m1 up has been on our radar for a long time, but the necessary CI support wasn't available... So hopefully now we can get there.

How is GNOME these days? My laptop is shipping and I'm going to try running on it and I haven't done GUI Linux desktop for a while. I could use a Fedora Spin, but if GNOME is working well these days I would rather simplify my life and not try to do something that isn't the most supported thing by the distro.

@gpshead @brettcannon he said GUI, not GNU 😅

Can I not just walk outdoors in Europe without having to breathe second-hand smoke? 😥😷🚭

Yhg1s, (edited )
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@mariatta Sure, there are lots of places in Europe that smoke less than the average, or have a stronger culture of keeping smoking areas away from doors and other foot traffic... But Europe is a continent, not a country, so every place is different :)

Then and now (three and a half years later). Demi still manages to look like a kitten, because she's always next to Akio... (She's actually bigger than most female cats, although her head is a bit small for her size.)

A picture of Akio, a large Savannah tomcat, and Demi, a young Savannah puss, lying side by side on a pillow in a cat tree. Akio has one big, long paw stretched out in front of him, making Demi's regular-sized paws seem tiny.

After a packed 2-hour handover meeting, I'm now officially no longer @ThePSF Board Chair (or President), nor a Board member at all. Very excited about everyone on the Board, the newly appointed officers, and the staff!

I'm eager to see them continue the PSF without me being directly involved! :)

It was also quite strange to remove myself from all those Slack channels and mailing lists after so many years... Maybe I want back! I think I'll cry softly in a corner now.

When people say "total compensation" in those man on the street interviews, that means cash + stock + benefits? or just cash (salary + bonus)?

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@BajoranEngineer cash + stock/options/other monetary benefits -- but not non-monetary benefits, like health insurance and what not.

In your responses to anyone anywhere, I would ask you to remember there is a difference between "I see your struggle and I want to be helpful to you" and "You're doing it wrong and I want to be the one to say that to you" and also a difference in how they will be taken in by others. If you don't know the difference between the two (or don't care), perhaps it would be best for you not to say anything at all.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@scalzi I'm always glad you post these kinds of things (first one I've seen here, but I remember seeing them more on birdsite) -- it's good advice, a good reminder, and I get to look though the replies and pre-emptively block people who really don't get the point!

Are you going to see anything cuter than this today? I think not.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@maryrobinette Reminds me a little of when Demi, a Savannah kitten rescued from a cat hoarder, met our big tomcat Akio for the first time... (She's still absolutely in love with him, years later.)

A small, timid kitten meeting a large tomcat for the first time, and instantly coming in for some grooming, scaring herself a little with her own eagerness. The tomcat is very gentle with her.

Celebrating @outreachy this morning for having now provided more than 1,000 paid open source internships for underrepresented people 🥳
