I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

@ajsadauskas @asklemmy I've been self-hosting and also use my instance for my private IT business. From what I can tell it's built on owncloud and the the server commands use the occ command that references that codebase.
Key apps to check out:

  • Memories (for photos)
  • Deck (for Kanban productivity boards)
  • Mastodon Integration
  • Polls (Doodle Alternative)
  • Forms
    -Appointments
  • Talk (May need a high-end signaling server but can replace Google Meetup/Teams/Zoom/Slack)

Another question for #WebDev #indieweb and #Mastodon crew about the Mastodon API:

Does anyone have an example they can share for how to add media (images) to a post programmatically (preferably with bash/shell scripts) in the Mastodon API? The official documentation looked more like JS and complicated, I'd like to see a simpler script.

Thanks!

Does anybody actually use the term "Personal Area Network" and abbreviate it PAN? I've seen that a couple times lately in my college class, and in almost 30 years in this field I don't think I've ever heard it in practice.

@mike always reminds me of a certain iconic stealth action game of the late 90’s. …Metal …. GEAR?!?

was Red Hat Linux circa version 6.1 in the late 90's early 2000's and was an overall fun/great experience although there was a bit of fighting with Windows 98 on the boot sector of my Compaq to run both in a dual boot.

I'm considering starting a personal to share ideas about topics that don't fit on my company's blog.
friends, what are your recommendations for software tools, platforms, hosting? I'm looking for free to cheap solutions. I'm personally interested in Jekyll and have professional experience developing Wordpress, but I feel WP is a bit overkill for this project.

@kev that was my hope, so bring it on! Mostly I’m looking for simplicity and minimalism. Jekyll piqued my interest because learning it might be something I can apply to my IT work where I sometimes do web dev. Having a low cost, low maintenance option is nice to offer, but this project is purely personal, so no need to involve work. It’s just always fun to learn useful skills.

Thanks everyone esp. @kev and @skoobasteeve I may end up doing a mix of several of the suggestions. Hugo looks pretty impressive and I may use netlify to host it. Does netlify have a way to throttle or just stop your website before incurring overage fees? I guess if not I can just use privacy.com to pause the CC.

@gamingonlinux cites was already great but some games didn’t work as well like Final Fantasy Explorers. I’ll have to give it another go. The Steam Deck controller is such an ergonomic improvement over hand cramps on my new2DS XL

on and the FediVerse:
I use as my production RMM in my IT small biz.

The issue's pattern: you have a DNS service routing traffic to your Meshcentral instance, often behind an reverse proxy. The main website works, but the remote connections start failing half the time. Now they always fail at a 0 sec timeout.

It seems caused by a change in cloudflare likely with but possibly certs?
Thoughts on this?

@gamingonlinux cool! Would love to see install size in n game mode on Steam deck in the store pages for each game. I’m constantly confounded by why I have to look that info up on my phone app or in desktop mode.
