‘In case I die, I need to publish this paper’: scientist who left the lab to fight in Ukraine

A Ukrainian scientist and soldier tells the world about how war has shaped his perspective on science and war: they cannot be separate. They're inextricably linked. Which is why Russia targets Ukrainian academic centres. I would add that this can extend to every part of the civilian sector. This is what total war looks like.

How much does it bother you when people talk about "open source" language models (like Llama 2) which are released under licenses that don't meet the OSI definition for open source?

absamma,
@absamma@toolsforthought.rocks avatar

@simon if it's not open source it's not open source. Period. You can't negotiate established definitions.

absamma,
@absamma@toolsforthought.rocks avatar

@boris @simon ok, but there is the problem of companies exploiting good natured discussions to suddenly push unfair value capture mechanisms that masquerade as open source but actually aren't even in spirit, or more egregiously retroactively applying said mechanisms to previous versions after they accept venture capital investment to capture any remaining value and leaving their stunned, uninformed community in the dust. How do we discourage this kind of behaviour?

@wordshaper @carnage4life exactly. Better yet, there should be laws against products that encourage harmful habits. We clearly haven't learned from the Juul fiasco.

The US has issued its first fine for space junk to a company: Dish Network inc. We need this framework in place or we will lose access to space.

Today is my first day as VP of Developer Relations at LlamaIndex! I wrote last week on my personal blog about why LLMs are the future of software, but TLDR: software that can understand the data it’s working with is about to become the way all software is built. So I’m delighted to be at a company at the center of the LLM universe.

With their discovery, we can safely introduce foreign vaccinating mRNA that our bodies can accept without destroying by swapping out certain bases without compromising the encoded foreign protein structure that produces the desired immune response.

LLMs are pretty good at product design brainstorming it seems... I can already hear the sound of fidgeting product designers and marketers. I can get some lovely high level UVP options from just a description of what I'd like to build.

The contrast between the Voxmedia code conference interviews with Lina Yaccarino and Yoel Roth is funny as hell. Brilliant journalism, and it illustrates so well the kind of clowns currently running Twitter (I will not call it X 😤). I pity Linda. Elon didn't even see the need to inform her that he's thinking about putting all of Twitter behind a paywall. Product staff don't even report to her. She should be asking herself, what am I even doing here?

@absamma@toolsforthought.rocks avatar

's empty real estate is the poster child of wasteful spending. Nothing else comes close I think. To quote China's bureau of statistics, they've got somewhere between 1-3 billion unoccupied houses/units that they'll never be able to sell and that even their entire population cannot fill. That's.... staggering. That's 5 trillion dollars of value thrown into a black hole. Something will have to give. The financial market abhors a vacuum this big.

absamma,
@absamma@toolsforthought.rocks avatar

@gavcloud that's only the tip of the iceberg. Erroneous census data, crumbling infrastructure and housing due to poor building materials, rampant corruption at the local government level that precipitated this debt crisis in the first place, reversion to wasteful soviet style agricultural practice that's led to China importing most of its food, etc. The list goes on. As one observer in China put it, they make the States look like a socialist utopia!

Brilliant video on how the invention of the clock eroded workers' leisure time, and how the pocket watch empowered workers to discover how their bosses were tampering with the clocks to make people work more for less. This is an example of how technological innovation can enable tyranny. We must learn from history. Share this with your boss and union 😉

A licence choice can make or break an open source project's business aspirations, especially if it doesn't play nice with the business model. I think there's a knowledge gap here amongst developers. Resources to address this gap would be good to have...

Bruno Lowagie, creator of iText is an illustration of the consequences of this knowledge gap:

    @jaschop @AkaSci I mean that's the point isn't it? Brute forcing distributed communication channels and systems. Same with DDoS etc. It's just a question of how you do it in as scalable a manner as possible. In this case, one does it by employing people at minimum or less than minimum wage and make it dead simple for them to do a simple task that yields a big overall net effect, whether that's propaganda posting, click farming etc
