(2) Sign up 44 billion users

Just finished reading "The Internet Con: How to seize the means of computation" by @pluralistic . Surprisingly, a lot of the book is about interoperability and making it happen legally. For me, this hit really hard because of how involved my work is around both. Key takeaway for me is that if we want to create a better tech society, we need to open up stuff with interoperability to drive innovation and competition rather than just regulate big tech expecting them to behave.

One problem we’re going to have with generative AI is that the practical use cases are going to be so valuable that customers are going to be the ones ignoring the AI ethicists not the big tech companies

$44 billion to become the most popular user on Twitter. My condolences to all the banks who thought they were investing in a business but actually invested in a billionaire’s midlife crisis.

What I love about Silicon Valley venture capitalists is that that they love being loud and wrong. If I had spent the last few years shilling crypto as the next big thing in tech only for a bunch of my portfolio companies to turn out to be Ponzi schemes & grifts, I’d never write publicly again.

I definitely wouldn’t write Bond villain style speeches about how AI ethics and trust & safety teams at tech companies are the enemy preventing you from colonizing the stars. 😬

"'The Techno-Optimist Manifesto,' which cites everyone from Friedrich Nietzsche to anonymous Twitter shitposters, boils down to a mostly tame, libertarian argument that is often reinvigorated in this manner whenever a startup founder who read The Fountainhead in high school finds himself newly rich."

Seven Principles of Learning from Institute for Research on

IRL's Seven Principles of Learning

Learning is fundamentally social.
Knowledge is integrated in the life of communities.
Learning is an act of membership.
Knowing depends on engagement in practice.
Engagement is inseparable from empowerment.
“Failure to Learn” is the normal result of exclusion from participation.
We already have a society of lifelong learners.

AI image detectors are labeling real images from the conflict between Israel and Hamas as faked which some people are calling a second layer of disinformation.

This cuts across two of my regular themes. First of all, systems that claim to detect AI generated text or images are snake oil. They are guessing and will often guess wrong.

Secondly, it’s difficult to figure out what the facts are in the middle of a war. Treating it as a tech or moderation problem isn’t enough

I think this might actually be the first time in my life I've been more horrified by some of the left than the right. The Ukraine war came close-ish, with some factions of the left siding with Russia due to distrust of the US (which, fair enough), and then tankies apparently being confused as to whether Russia is still socialist or not. But all of that was balanced out by the right trying to undermine Ukraine funding in favor of the most stupid shit ever.

But this week a lot of leftists who support Palestine somehow stumbled past the point and went straight for glorifying one of the most horrific massacres in recent history, openly supporting Hamas, and even straight up calling for the elimination of Israel. I always thought the right had a monopoly on overt racism and unjust violence, but apparently if you substitute in words like "decolonization" you can get some of the left to go full Nazi too.

Stop using random anti-adblock fixes you find on the internet, these are almost always out of date and interfere with the actual anti-adblock features in uBlock Origin. YouTube is changing their anti-adblock code multiple times per day.

Simply do the following:

  1. Use uBlock Origin and no other adblocker. This includes disabling adblocking in "Enhancer for YouTube", and any built in browser blocker
  2. In uBlock's settings, purge caches and update filters

My crankiest opinion: I hate apps.

Most apps are just clingy bitches. They want to collect too much info, they take up too much space, they want to notify you of trivial bullshit. Most apps should just be websites.

Very disturbing:

TL;DR: Hotline workers unionise, get replaced by AI, within weeks helpline is shut down for safety reasons. A client says "I would have died, had I had that advice early in my illness".

"the National Eating Disorders Association helpline, which tried to replace human volunteers with a chatbot--and why the datafication & automation of mental health services are an injustice that will disproportionately affect the already vulnerable."
