I assume there's a spec reason why loads of new HTML attributes are inaccessible and ugly? I mean seriously, popovertargetaction?

I appreciate the API and new features but we know all lowercase text without spaces is hard to read and messes with assistive technologies.

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@siblingpastry The case insensitivity actually makes me more confused, docs and specs could literally write popoverTargetAction as @hi_mayank pointed out and it would work fine and be better for everyone.

I would have loved for them to be hyphenated, but I believe that's restricted by the spec iirc

It's my birthday today and I'm at work, but given it's a bank holiday everywhere else it's basically just me doing me own thing. Most chill days work in years!

Does anyone know of a modern phone which allows call recording without root?

I'm currently on an aging 5T running and can record calls just fine - a button in the dialler lets me record straight from the line. I don't need to put it on speaker and record via the microphone.

(Looking for 1st hand experience, not search results. No need to reply to discuss the legality of call recording. I need root-less for online banking etc.)

TIP: You can npm install directly from git. You can target a branch, tag, or even a specific commit.

https://www.bram.us/2019/12/09/use-a-github-repository-as-a-dependency-in-package-json/

And if you're trying out things locally stuff, you can directly install from a directory without needing to npm link

https://www.bram.us/2020/03/20/easily-install-local-npm-packages-by-referring-to-their-directory/

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@amxmln @bramus Yeah it defaults to GitHub but you can provide the full git URL or preface with bitbucket:user/repo for example.

Hello friends, particularly friends who have moved country!

My sister is moving to New Zealand tomorrow and doesn't know what to do with her phone, hopefully getting a NZ SIM but keeping her UK number on PAYG or something.

She wants to keep her UK number as 2FA etc is linked to it, but ideally not pay for a contract.

On an iPhone so one would need to be an eSIM I think.

Anyone have any insight?

Dealing with more travel chaos as our trains down south have been delayed and then cancelled whilst we're on them making us miss connections.

I am cursed, why is this proving so hard to get back home! God this Christmas has been a nightmare

What were your favorite posts of the year? 🤔

And, in case you have a personal site, which of your own posts was your fave or the most “successful” of 2023?

(Asking for my subscribers, of course. 😊)

@matthiasott I don't do analytics so I don't know, but my favourite of my own was the one I wrote for HTMHell about web performance: https://www.htmhell.dev/adventcalendar/2023/14/

My favourites off the top of my head:

A major strategic mistake Mozilla made in the past few years is not finding some way to make some version of the file/directory picker APIs from the File System Access API work

The web overall is becoming the default platform for work and productivity services. Having a path towards working with documents and directories would have strengthened Firefox considerably

Being Chrome-only, those APIs are unusable for most. The UX is just too different from what can be polyfilled in other browsers 😐

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@baldur I understand Mozilla's concerns but refusing to implement or engage at all with something that empowers developers is risky and ineffective.

What's clear too is their objection seems mostly meaningless. To build apps that engage with the filesystem web developers have to encourage users to ditch Firefox or to install an app. All it's achieved is less FF users and less security/privacy.

Instead they could have helped shape the API and build a good user-friendly UI to limit abuse.

The best tech-related / tech-adjacent community is the web one. Frontend and web standards. It's so not even close it's a joke. Imagine there being a Beyond Tellerrand or like a @mia of, like, fintech or AI or something. Pffff.

@sarajw This is wonderful Sara, thank you so much for writing this! I know exactly what you mean, I had an experience not too dissimilar.

I had dropped out of Uni where I was part of groups I could no longer participate in. I worked doing web stuff freelance but got very lonely doing that, bombed interviews because I was good at my way but not the industry way of doing web.

In 2019 I got into the frontend twitter world and it changed my life. Suddenly I felt a part of something, larger...

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@sarajw than the disparate friends I had. Particularly when I got my first proper agency job where people were lovely but not very social, and when I was essentially living alone during COVID it genuinely kept me going.

Andy Bell's Piccalilli Discord was also so meaningful to me and although I'm not frequently in touch with everyone I spoke to there it was one of my main social groups and was absolutely wonderful.

Mastodon, Front End Horse and a few others continue that to a degree and yeah...

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@sarajw, although I was not involved in church or faith as much as you were, the Front End community does fill that space for me. It's wonderful!

All of this talk of Whamageddon has got me thinking. For those unaware, Whamageddon is a 'game' where you see how far you can get through December without hearing Wham's Last Christmas.

@girlonthenet has some good thoughts and links here: https://mastodon.social/@girlonthenet/111572513261979211

So I've decided from now and for all future years I'll be playing "Whamazing" instead, where I listen to and enjoy Last Christmas as much as I can, at least once a day during pre-Christmas December.

Welcome to tech, where conf organisers create fake profiles of woman speakers to fake diversity and catfish speakers who refuse to talk when the line up isn't diverse.
Yeah, because finding actual women to speak at an 800$ ticket event wasn't possible? 😒

If you have a personal website: how did it change your life?

Like, did you get hired because of it? Did it open up interesting opportunities? Did you meet amazing people because of it? Did you learn and grow? Whatever it is, let me know. And once again, I’m asking for my subscribers. 🤗💚

accudio,
@accudio@mastodon.scot avatar

@matthiasott Most importantly for me it got me invited to speak at a conference! I had put in very little effort into speaking as a thing I could do before, but I was invited to speak about how I did a few parts of my personal site.
Now conferences are a thing I do, and I have made some great friends through speaking and attending.

It also definitely contributed to getting my current job!
