Obligate infovore; I write fantasy, sci fi, and software. All posts made with 100% recycled electrons, sustainably crafted by artisanal artisans. He*/him/his. Doctor, if you absolutely insist.

Nothing said here should be construed as in any way connected to my daytime employer.

I boost and star freely. Boosts of my stuff are jes' fine. I control follow requests to avoid scrapers and spammers, is not personal.

"Ph, I'm immune to propaganda/advertising"

No. No you're not. And advertisers and propagandandists depend on that arrogance.

(Being wrong feels just like being right. We are not diviners of truth. This is why science exists--to help us prove shit. Because we're deeply imperfect.)

What.

"Although the brain flatlines after the heart stops, and that happens within seconds, it doesn't mean that it's permanently damaged and [has] died. It's just hibernating. [...]the brain can respond and restore function again, even after an hour later, which opens up a whole window of opportunity for doctors to start new treatments."

New study indicates window of survivability before brain death is much, much longer than expected.

@weirdwriter I can't really recommend it as a workflow but I set up many macros in vim to expand to common words when I was writing Java. (e.g. p* became public)

System wide utilities for macros include aText on Mac; you can define arbitrary expansions of text, including with variables and custom final placement of the cursor if the end of the phrase isn't where you want to resume editing.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I use the Emperor's New Clothes metaphor so much people are tired of it, but it always gets the point across...

i reckon all software developers should read this thread. it's incredible. literally everything is here. entire books could be written about it

. @jk So, this has been my day job for the last 15ish years--talking devs down from the brink of "but a complete solution is not theoretically possible!" to "here's a compromise that satisfies user needs".

I used to call it UX but now I am not so sure.

Sept 9 - Have you ever abandoned a writing project that wasn't working? What was wrong?

It's a damn poor explorer who doesn't get lost sometimes.

And for the record they're not abandoned--I am totally getting back to all 236 of them some day...!

@chris I've used a Kinesis ergo (now called the Advantage2) for decades. Dramatic improvement in shoulder angle for me. I haven't tried this two-part variation but it's clearly related.

My one note, both this and the Kinesis rely too heavily on thumb buttons, making you yaw your thumbs around. When I was RSI'd, that was awful. But it's easy to remap things.

@chris If you remap all the things away from the thumbs, it could work. But yeah.

Day 28: If your MC could live anywhere in our world, where would they choose?

Roughskin Magic: Jason doesn't have a single place he fits in, so, nowhere at the outset. Fozzie thinks oppositely: he strives to make where he is a place he (and others) would want to live in.

Amir (from WIP): This is, essentially, the plot of The Dream Makers, so I guess we'll find out? (This is not me being cute. I am a complete pantser, and can't say I know yet.)

HOW TO SPOT A DEEP FAKE:

    1. You can't.

Don't think you can. You can spot clumsy ones, but you've already missed a dozen others. We're past the stage where even expert practitioners can have a 100% success rate.

Instead, think about how to avoid taking action, or trusting someone, because of who they seem to be. Holding onto the fantasy that "I can spot 'em!" is harmful, and moves the onus of responsibility from collective to personal.

This is also true for , of course.

Repeating a lie to debunk it simply strengthens the lie. Our brains are messy little adjacency + activation engines.

    Speak the truth instead.

    Obligatory post:

I'm a programmer with a checkered past as a user experience specialist. I also write and publish sci-fi and fantasy stories. And I speculate about the future, in ways that have a frustrating habit of coming true.

Books (Duplicate, We Were Gods, End Game, and Roughskin Magic) are at alexfeinman.net or online elsewhere.

I wrote a bunch of stuff on Medium that may be of interest; will link the best here.
