She/her/they
I once worked with goats. I moved into tech. This was a mistake. Expect sheep, wool, and textile history. Also birbs. Infosec on occasion. I use content warnings for topics and images that can trigger PTSD. I do not use them to shield people without trauma from experiencing racism, sexism, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination. If you can ignore politics, you’re not likely in need of content warnings for much of anything, really.

If you're at it's likely you've been in a poorly-ventilated, crowded room with someone carrying the flu, RSV, or COVID.

It's not too late to wear a mask to protect yourself.

Please consider wearing a mask on your trip home. Don't attend mass infection events and get into a train with cancer patients, babies, people with asthma, etc.

If you’re going to a talk at by someone who is the sole maintainer of code you rely on, wear a mask! If you’re one of a small number of contributors to an open source project, wear a mask!

We talk about “bus numbers” but at an event without a public health pledge, your project should consider “COVID numbers”. Long COVID hits marathon runners, young people, vegetarians and meat eaters, people with the vaccines, etc.

Protect each other out there.

You’re not going to meet some people at open source tech events, because it’s not safe. The organizers made a choice to exclude disabled people. Given the lack of accessibility in open source alternatives to commercial software, this is a huge mistake.

If it’s not accessible, it’s probably annoying to use (paraphrasing Reginé Gilbert).
If it’s annoying to use, people will not switch from Google, Apple, etc.
Why? Usability.

I write this because I think FLOSS can do better.

Except for the tech bro at FOSDEM 2019 who harassed me for using accessibility tools that only run on Windows. He can get in the sea. I have been using Linux longer than some of youse have been alive. If there were alternatives that worked, I would use them. Get off my lawn.

The rest of you are temporarily abled, with temporarily functioning immune systems. I genuinely hope you protect yourselves and your colleagues.

War crimes are not a treatment for PTSD.

So, has anyone written about trauma counseling that is effective in preventing victims from believing nationalist, racist hate speech?

I feel for the victims of terror attacks but it’s chilling to hear them say that “those people don’t want peace” and for them to use trauma to advocate for murdering children.

Your trauma does not entitle you to war crimes.

War crimes are not a treatment for PTSD.

If we cut off funding to NGOs and aid agencies when an few employees are accused of violence there would be a lot of unemployed white western executive directors.

When authoritarian regimes try to kick out aid workers it’s usually a sign they’re up to something. Where is the outrage?

Palestinians need food, water, and medicine no matter what. NO. MATTER. WHAT.

Call your politicians.

COVID wrecks your immune system among other things.
It’s a good time to wear a mask.

Marching against the AfD is the lowest bar.

Ask about anti-Blackness. Germany does not do well in surveys of Black people about racism.

Ask about Namibia where most land is in the hands of Germans. Ask about reparations.

Ask about whether Palestinians are welcome at these protests.

Ask about censorship of Jewish descendants of Holocaust survivors. Ask whether Jewish Germans are allowed to decide for themselves what hatred is, or if white non-Jewish Germans get to decide. WTF, right?

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

Germany will never truly atone for genocide unless everyday racism and hatred of non-Christian religions is confronted.

It's not an imported problem.

akareilly,

The misogyny of the Nazis also lingers.

The gender pay gap persists. Pensions are wildly unequal.

Violence against women persists.

Germany lags behind other European nations for equality in the workplace.

Just because the Nazi slogan isn't shouted from the rooftop doesn't mean hiring managers and politicians aren't thinking that women belong with the children, kitchen, and church.

Good job marching against the AfD.

Now we hold the rest of the parties accountable for how they overlap with the AfD.

If the AfD is allowed to frame hatred of religious minorities as a problem brought to Germany (GERMANY!) by immigrants (again, in GERMANY) in order to gain votes, and the centrist parties go along with it, it will be
the most obvious case of
Leopards Ate My Face! in history.

I really don’t care how you feel. I care that you do better.

There are many accessibility issues but it's rare that disabled people are going to ask for help in the form of more scrutiny from biotypical people.
This is how ambulatory wheelchair users get harassed.
This is how younger people WITH THE BLUE BADGE get harassed while parking or sitting in the bus.
This is how people who need to attend to ostomy bags get screamed at in bathrooms.

If you see someone "faking a disability", no you bloody well did not.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

Abled people: "OMG did you see that person who totally doesn't look disabled? They're stealing all the privileges of having an actual disability"

People with disabilities: "What privileges?"

Mind your business.

Fake claiming isn't just annoying. It's harmful.

https://privacyinternational.org/long-read/4395/shedding-light-dwp-part-1-we-read-uk-welfare-agencys-995-page-guide-conducting

https://themighty.com/topic/disability/ending-fake-claim-harassment-chronic-illness-disability/

Support claims denied. Yelling. Spitting. Denying entry to task-trained medical alert dogs because "you don't look sick".
For some people with invisible disabilities this is a regular thing. Imagine not being able to do boring errands in peace. Imagine being interrogated about using the bathroom.

Mind your business. Demand privacy for disabled people. Call your Reps and MPs.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

@moss This! What I want most of all is to be able to go about my day anonymously like anyone else, without anyone huffing and puffing if I need accessibility help that day.
Disabilities don't turn introverts into extroverts.
