I once worked with goats. I moved into tech.This was a mistake. Expect sheep, wool, and textile history. Also birbs. Infosec on occasion. I use content warnings for topics and images that can trigger PTSD. I do not use them to shield people without trauma from experiencing racism, sexism, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination. If you can ignore politics, you’re not likely in need of content warnings for much of anything, really.

Me, trapped in the desert for days, "If I don't get a glass of water I'll die."

Reply guy pulling over his car, winds down the window: "I think you'll find water can be conveyed in lots of kinds of containers. You're welcome." Drives off.

What you are referring to as water, is in fact, GNU/Water, or as I've recently taken to calling it...

Help me out here, when the sea shanty fad spread like wildfire, someone posted a shanty-like union song that went super hard, but I forgot what it was. Does someone have an idea what I'm referring to based on that super vague description?

Come, all you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good old union
Has come in here to dwell
Which side are you on, boys?
Which side are you on?
My daddy was a miner
He's now in the air and sun
He'll be with you fellow workers
Until the battle's won
Which side are you on, boys?
Which side are you on?

Pound a Week Rise by Siobhan Miller

Come on all you colliers who work down the mine
From Scotland to South Wales from Teesdale to Tyne
I'll sing you a song of the pound a week rise
...
And it's down you go
Down below, Jack
Where you never see the skies
And you're working in a dungeon
For your pound a week rise

And it's go boys, go
They'll time your every breath
And every day you're in this place
You're two days nearer death
But you go

What you may not know about the escaped royal horses is that, not content with training them to trample peasants, one of the Georges cross bred them with kelpies. While they are not yet obligate carnivores, Charles IV being a vegetarian and trying to get the royal horses to go back to a vegan diet prompted them to break out and go on the hunt.

Do not fall for bullshit.

A reminder that while the Iranian government is a bunch of assholes, the Iranian people are not assholes.

The military industrial Congressional complex of the US has been pushing for war with Iran for decades.

Iran had a democratically elected government, but Mossadegh wanted Iranians to benefit from their own oil (radical, amirite?) so the US and UK got together in 1953 and orchestrated a coup and installed A MONARCHY, FFS.

Do not fall for bullshit.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

The monarchy in Iran had secret services trained by Americans to do horrible things.

The revolution was a response to that, but like most revolutions the most ruthless assholes killed or exiled the more progressive people.

Iranian activists have been fighting the right wing government for decades.

Remember cheering on the people shouting "Women, Life, Freedom!" because they are still there.

Hey US citizens, you know the feeling of a small number of people voting for assholes, right?

New challenge:

Stop shaming disabled and chronically ill people for using social media.

Yes, even commercial social media.

Not disabled? You have no idea how important an established community of people who help you NOT DIE is.

Sometimes, harm reduction doesn't lead to open source software. Shocking, I know.

"Why don't you just ask your general practice physici-" SHUSH.

You don't take meeting notes for the people in the meeting. You take them for people who aren't in the meeting.

That includes three-months-from-now-you, who also isn't in the meeting.

@xahteiwi Everyone needs to learn how to take good meeting notes. Because sometimes the usual note-taker isn't in the meeting. If you have a usual note-taker, fix it.

Either the IDF is absolutely shit at aiming very powerful weapons or is targeting aid workers on purpose. Neither possibility is acceptable.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

Let me translate:

IF (option one) THEN BAD
IF (option two) THEN BAD

The point is that even if someone believes the IDF, you can still say it is reckless disregard for human life.

This is political rhetoric 101 stuff, people.
Nowhere in this post am I giving the benefit of doubt to the IDF.
The point is they will claim it was "just" neglect AND EITHER WAY THEY NEED TO STOP BOMBING.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

If you deliberately hit people with a car, that's murder.

If you drive with an impairment that means you are likely to hit people, that may not be murder but it's still killing someone.

Either way someone needs to take the keys away from you.

So, if you're talking to someone who is ACTUALLY defending the IDF, tell them this: If a military force can't distinguish between aid workers and the enemy, someone needs to take the drones away. Ask them to support a ceasefire during an investigation

Hey funders,

You know you could just... give... the money... to projects that need it. Like software libraries that ARE IN EVERYTHING.

No grants. Don't make tech nerds write grants.
Don't make the tech nerds hire grant nerds to write grants.

FFS don't fund research into this problem with a budget of double what it would take to SOLVE THE PROBLEM for a significant number of open source projects with code that is, again, IN EVERYTHING.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

@brainwane This is so much better. Grant application processes are a nightmare and I hope grant writing as a profession disappears entirely.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

When I implore people to have a code of conduct and community management I am well aware that I sit on a throne of lies, but not like you may be thinking.

The "no asshole rule" does not apply to grant writers since we are only assholes to ourselves.

A grant writer is a meat computer that turns whisky and rage into funding for software development.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

Understand computers? Loathe yourself a reasonable amount?

Need money for open source development?

I'll teach you WTF a logic model is and how to make one.

You do need to have, or be open to having a code of conduct*

*that should, really, ban grant writing because it's cruelty, but developers need rent and burrito money and someone has to be the sacrificial goat

akareilly, to random
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

If you want many eyes on your open source project, you need to get rid of assholes.

Bad community management is a security risk.

Assholes bully sole maintainers.
Assholes gatekeep and keep maintainer numbers low.
Assholes waste time on the mailing list with petty bullshit.
If you fundraise, assholes are bullying your grant writers and community managers.

Some of the best security contributors don't write a single line of code. They yeet assholes.

akareilly,
@akareilly@hachyderm.io avatar

Some open source projects don't need government interference to end up with backdoors.

One asshole, especially one who is also a boundary-stomping creep, is going to torment the people who would otherwise be calmly looking for errors.

One asshole is going to lay claim to a project and reject code review.

If this is your project and you do have a government agent trying to interfere? Hire one sexual harasser and your spook is going to put his feet up and let the asshole do his job.
