The most ridiculous thing about cop procedural shows is when they ask where a person was, and what they were doing at a specific time the person always has perfect and immediate recall. I'd be desperately trying to remember what day of the week that was, and trying to open my phone calendar. If I was the cop, I'd immediately be suspicious of the person who remembered exactly where they were and what they were doing.

Surely it can't be him, he's not that sloppy to break a car window and run away - unless he's planning something?

Turns out nuclear power is a lot more expensive than renewable power.

alextecplayz,

@billbennett I think nuclear still has potential, it still has a longer lifespan compared to solar panels. Maybe we could discover some way to reduce cost while not compromising on safety or efficiency.

Telegram is notoriously insecure and routinely cooperates with govs behind the scenes while talking a big game about speech and privacy. Even their limited opt-in (roll their own) encryption is sus. The more you know 🌈

alextecplayz,
@alextecplayz@techhub.social avatar

@shadowwwind @Mer__edith Quoting a 2020 Yahoo article:

"The app was kept afloat thanks to nearly $3 million in funding from the Open Technology Fund, a Congress-funded nonprofit that finances projects aimed at countering censorship and surveillance."
https://www.yahoo.com/tech/inside-story-signal-became-private-150114933.html

So no, the 'US Government' didn't fund Signal. What did this guy smoke?

campuscodi, to random
@campuscodi@mastodon.social avatar

This is just of the many tweets that are flooding Twitter these days praising Telegram and discouraging users from using Signal with stupid NSA and FBI conspiracy theories.

Under no scenario you should have Telegram installed on your phone. It's basically the Hulk Hogan of E2EE apps

alextecplayz,
@alextecplayz@techhub.social avatar

@eS @skotchygut @campuscodi It's not encrypted, unless you specifically enable Secret Chats that are available only in one-on-one conversations. That's the biggest problem with it, security-wise. The developers are based in the UAE.

There is this great comparison table between instant messengers that I recommend you take a look at, which can tell you more: https://eylenburg.github.io/im_comparison.htm

So, I was on a long drive yesterday, and put on some pump me up music, so I didn't get sleepy. I just put something on YouTube, and I ended up in the group of music that I would call Peak Mid to Late Millenial. For perspective, I'm one of the Gappers, not quite old enough to be Gen X, but also feel too old to be a Millenial, although I suppose I technically am, just an Ancient one. ANYWAY, this music, on the surface, sounds like bubble gum pop dance music, the kind you dance in "da club" to, but as I was listening, I realized most of the lyrics had a trend that broke down basically to this:

Get your friends together, drink heavily, have sex, party, DANCE, GO LIVE IN THE PRESENT, because we will all probably die young anyway.

Most of these songs are probably between 10-15 years old, and honestly probably really caught onto the zeitgeist of the time. Hope didn't work, we are still caught in a shit conflict none of us want to be in. The world is actively burning, and no one in power wants to save it. We make less money than our parents and their parents, we'll probably never get to own a home, we'll probably have college debt forever, if we could even afford to go. Might as well party your life away. I do wonder if Trump was a pretty big slap in the face about how bad it could really go, because this Apocalypse attitude seems to be changing a bit, or maybe Gen Z is just rebelling against their sad grunge Gen X parents. LOL

Either way, that was some kind of a ramble, share your thoughts on this, and listen to a peak representation of this musical phenomenon. It's kind of a banger.

@datn @RickiTarr Probably relevant song from 1961, it just so happens that I've discovered it last week:

Sammy Salvo - A Mushroom Cloud
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTstk36-3Ak

"I wanna be happy, I want to be gay
I want to be normal in every way
But a mushroom cloud hangs over my dreams
It haunts my future and threatens my schemes
Peace, peace, peace, where did you go?"

It's just another lifeless piece of crap that will end up being exploited by advertisers until they release the next 'big' thing. Do give it a watch, it's unfortunate that other reviewers on social media don't talk about it. It's all about hype, about how it's going to get better, it's going to be smaller, etc, but not about how disconnected and disillusioned you start to feel after you use this thing. It's quite literally becoming a nightmare.

Do NOT trust this new startup company promising to deliver a new Linux-based handheld device. They have funding from blockchain companies, they promise way too much, their goals are high, and some of the promises can't even be delivered. How do they plan on allowing players to play Fortnite? What does an 'immutable distro' have to do with hackers? So many questions...

If I didn't know any better, this could be a scam or something that will leave the limelight soon enough and the people will run off with the $10 million they secured in funding.

Interesting, has been a few days ago. Email addresses, names and usernames were compromised.

I was thinking yesterday, while sifting through some old stuff I had when I was younger, that I should delete old accounts and accounts from platforms I don't use, such as Pinterest, I guess it's a good time to do it now 😄

At trial, Epic argues Google “bribed” its way to an Android app monopoly

Google says "bribe is a pretty strong word" for efforts to court app developers.

@arstechnica Interesting, as Epic has bribed developers to bring their games to EGS as a bait-and-switch tactic (Metro Exodus is one infamous example), and bribed people to make EGS look better than Steam on social media.

Samsung and other big phone manufacturers such as ZTE and Motorola are remotely disabling 'gray market' phones bought in Mexico. These aren't phones with stolen IMEIs, mind you, just phones from other regions sold on eBay at a cheaper price.

Finished watching the first season of Castlevania : Nocturne, it was fantastic!

In the first image you can see Drolta, one of the main antagonists of this season, and the second image shows Olrox, a gay vampire. Lord have mercy 😍

Samsung has announced the beta program for One UI 6, its OS based on Android 14. The beta includes a revamped Quick Settings panel, a new camera widget, situational wallpapers, and more.

The beta will be available for Galaxy S23 users in South Korea, the U.S., and Germany.

Samsung made a great feature called Maintenance Mode that hides your apps & personal data so you don't have to factory reset your phone before sending it in for repair.

Google should DEFINITELY bring this to Pixel phones and I have an idea of how: https://www.androidcentral.com/apps-software/google-should-bring-samsungs-maintenance-mode-to-pixel-phones

alextecplayz,
@alextecplayz@techhub.social avatar

@MishaalRahman I think this should be a base feature of Android moving forward, regardless of OEM. Android should include a 'Maintenance Mode' that can then be further customized by OEMs if they really need to. It's a great feature.
