Inspiration porn is bad, and wow companies sure love it on GAAD

Just gonna say “no worries either way” for the rest of my life to ever single person I’ve ever asked anything to, that seems like a good plan

Yesterday I put this new bird feeder out filled to the top with bird seed. Today that feeder is already half empty.

Are birds okay??

The same hanging bird feeder half full of safflower seeds and one bird sitting on it feeding.

Many I know in tech are being expected to do more work than ever with tighter deadlines and little support

If you are in that situation now, feeling like you aren’t doing enough or like a failure I urge you to consider the opposite.

Challenge the system you exist within, remember you are worthy

@danirabbit have I told you your hair is hella cool yet?

I do not know why I struggle to use Mastadon a lot. When I’m in the feed something about the way the UI is displayed in the app I use doesn’t process well.

While I’m on this topic though I gotta tell ya I have watched a lot of folks with disabilities interact with compliant products.

Those products typically are barely functionality, yes, the bar for accessibility is in hell.

Make your shit more than compliant.

annaecook, to random
@annaecook@mstdn.social avatar

I’m so tired of having to make a business case for accessibility.

Make your product at least compliant it’s literally your job.

Do your job.

People in large organizations that focus on accessibility decouple parts of it from their identity, no matter how much they care about it.

To continue pushing for change, we must preserve our ability to function in those environments in the long term.

We have to protect ourselves to do that.

Where are the dance classes for 30 something out of shape people huh??

I just want to learn the utterly useless skill of an entire boy band routine like all other millennials who are reclaiming their souls and youth

Maybe my next endeavor should become the “Tech Vent Ventress” and I just let people pay me to vent about working in tech.

Better than therapy because I understand tech culture.

The problem with being an accessibility / inclusivity designer is every day is either “what you’re doing is very important” or “we don’t care about what you’re doing and the work doesn’t matter” and you never know what you’re gonna get or from whom.

What I would really like to see Bluesky do is actively make accessibility documentation for releases and be transparent about that work.

It would be rad if they facilitated open and productive feedback from the disability community.

I’d love all products to do that tbh.

I find it difficult to answer the question “is [blank] accessible?” Because usually there’s like 10 levels of explanation required to actually answer the question.

Things like accessibility compliance v inclusive usability, accessibility for different people and needs, all affect the answer.

I recommend designers learn to read frontend code and practice screen reader use

That way they can understand generally how code affects screen reader interactions

It doesn’t replace talking with screen reader users but does help make those conversations more fruitful when you know basics.

I don’t know how often free labor is requested by most folks in tech but it sure is requested a lot from people who focus on accessibility.

To put it simply, I do not accept unpaid work, and my peers in this space also do not.

Please be mindful that our time is valuable too, just like anyone’s.

More people are going into the “generative UI” camp of design/dev.

Please remember that your default UI must be accessible no matter what.

No matter how dynamic your UI is, that’s not going to magically solve accessibility

Accessibility is and will continue to be about defaults and intentionality

Just me telling designers they can’t make up a new component that will do 15 things and only work for mouse users

for the last few months I’ve watched every single episode of Star Wars Clone Wars and listened to every podcast episode from A More Civilized Age that goes with them and this is how I consume media now

Very slowly and with media literary breakdown

Global Accessibility Awareness Day is coming up and it’s a great time for someone to make a bot that calls out companies for underpaying disabled employees and contractors the way that gender pay bot did on international women’s day

For legal reasons I never said this

Me: design systems are great always use the design system

Them: but the design system has an accessibility issue with their component they haven’t fixed

Me: to hell with the design system fix the bug and make them adopt the fix
