Well y'all, after a couple of false starts, I have successfully blown away the prior Ubuntu/Windows 10 dual boot setup on my ancient PC laptop, and replaced it with Bazzite. Bazzite is apparently a gaming-friendly flavor of Linux, and looks a lot like the Linux flavor on my Steam Deck.

It took some patience and tweaking, but now the system is successfully booting into the OS. Steam and Lutris are confirmed present. And I'm installing Skyrim as we speak.

The big hilarious question to answer here will be, will I actually be able to run Skyrim? And if so, will I get the same hilariously bad FPS I got without mods? We're talking 8-15fps right around Whiterun, LOL.

This should be amusing. :D

@kyonshi Neither had I until I saw it mentioned in a recent toot containing some modern flavors of Linux that folks can consider if they wanna switch off of Windows.

Here's the URL to get it:

Er, how are we supposed to riff Hogfather? It's actually a pretty good movie. I just don't have it in me to make fun of Terry Pratchett.

I'm genuinely puzzled. What's the point? My wife, who sometimes Monsterdons with me, is not interested this time for similar reasons,

Thoughts, anyone?

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@rwhe More than once I've found movies to be actually good, and therefore not really movies I want to riff on per se. But it's still enjoyable to comment with others in a group watch about the stuff I appreciate!

Have I mentioned how much I appreciate that Lower Decks has turned my pre-existing winter raincoat into an away-team jacket?

@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@rmd1023 @moira It was hands down the best SNW episode this season. :D They actually came up with a way to make crossing over between those two shows work!

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @rmd1023 @moira Season 2 didn't suck, even the musical episode. Dara didn't care for it but I liked it better. The technobabble reason for why everybody was bursting into song was admittedly flimsy. But HOLY CRAP Uhura can sing. <3

And it did also drop a significant side plot point. If you decide to watch the season but skip that episode anyway (and it IS mostly skippable) come back and I'll tell you what the important plot point is.

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@wrog @moira @rmd1023 The "wait a minute now" thing I always have with Pike's fate is, why exactly Federation medical technology wasn't capable of doing anything besides dooming him to being trapped in that chair for the rest of his life.

This is a setting where twice now we've seen Klingons surgically altered to look like humans,, we've seen Kirk himself surgically altered to look like a Romulan (and had that reverted as of the end of the episode), we've seen McCoy slip a 20th century woman a pill that made her grow an entire new kidney, and we've seen people pull off medical miracles by using somebody's last known pattern in the transporter buffer.

So WTF was keeping them from helping Pike? o.O

@moira @wrog @rmd1023 LOL yes. :D "Because PLOT is why!"

today's question: what non-Godzilla film would you add Godzilla to

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@moira @carithlee Yes, Master and Commander and Godzilla wherein Aubrey must outwit the French ship in seeing which of them can successfully recruit Godzilla to their side of the Napoleonic wars! And BOY ARE THEY SURPRISED when Godzilla sinks both of their ships.

The survivors, which naturally include Jack and Stephen, make it to a nearby island! Which of course has Mothra on it, and Jack and Stephen have to convince Mothra to take them home to England. Which they manage to pull off by performing a lyrical violin and cello duet. Because OF COURSE they saved their instruments.

In which Finds-The-Way infiltrates the Thalmor Embassy; rescues Esbern from the Ratway and reunites him with Delphine; helps Esbern and Delphine take over Sky Haven Temple so they can access Alduin's Wall; and cleanses a dead knight's corrupted heart to put his soul to rest.

Some German geekery in this one, particularly featuring inconsistent translations of the Ebony Spell Knight armor. Also some WTFery about one of my adopted kids wanting to adopt a dog I DID NOT HAVE WITH ME.

And also: the deployed an update that changed my color profile! Result: excuse to test this with a whole bunch more screenshots!

@kitoconnell Yeah, I've run into that problem in previous playthroughs. :/ I'm far enough along at this point though that I can live with it, though. Finds-the-Way is high enough level that if she had another dog actively following her, that dog would be way too squishy against any levelled opponents coming at her.

But it'd also block me from picking up one of the friendly dwarven machines in Kagrumez on Solstheim, and that would make me sad!

I'm going to try a couple of the workarounds I've dug up researching, and see if I can recover the dog. And if I can I'll leave it at Lakeview with the kids. We'll see what happens!

Followup on this thread I posted earlier:

https://mastodon.murkworks.net/@annathepiper/111467755713006541

I have advanced the problem along a bit. My current problem is that in all my various directories of screenshot files, I have a metadata.json file I want to extract data from. I want to use the extracted data to build an appropriate "wp media import" command, to feed to WP-CLI.

Here's my dilemma: I don't know jq well enough yet. I've been trying to teach myself about how its filters work tonight, but I'm not quite comfortable enough with it or with bash to work out how to accomplish what I want to do.

Recommendations solicited. /1

Each json file looks like this:

{
"items": [
{
"file": "2022060500015100_s.jpg",
"caption": "Defiled Shrine of Malacath",
"description": "This time through playing The Cursed Tribe, I finally clued in that part of why Malacath is so pissed off at the Largashbur stronghold is because they've allowed giants to defile one of his actual shrines. I only realized this because I actually bothered to explore the giant camp where I have to kill Shagrol, because Yamarz can't do it. And I found this statue of Malacath, stained in blood. No wonder Malacath is pissed off.",
"alt": "Defiled Shrine of Malacath",
"custom_url": "",
"custom_target": ""
}
]
}

For any example where there are multiple files in the directory, there will be multiple objects in the items directory.

So what I want to do:

I want to iterate through the "items" array, and extract the following four things:

  1. file
  2. caption
  3. description
  4. alt

And I want to take those four values and plug them into an appropriate command, like so:

wp import media <file> --caption=<caption> --title=<caption> --desc=<description> --alt=<alt>

I'm using caption twice in this example because I need to fill in title, and title isn't available in my json. But in all cases I know title will be set to the same things as caption and alt. /3

annathepiper,
@annathepiper@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

What I've figured out how to do so far:

jq -c '.items|.[]|.file,.caption,.description,.alt' metadata.json

If I run this jq command I know I can extract just the fields I actually want, and ignore the empty fields in the structure.

But what I don't know yet is how I can effectively use this command in a loop in a bash script, and extract the actual values into the wp import media command.

Anybody got any tips for how I can polish this up?

Thanks!

@cmdrmoto @Binder I don't know awk. Yet. I haven't ever had a need to know it, and it's only been tonight that I've needed to poke at jq! (I've used JSON before, but haven't ever had to parse it on a command line.)
