Retro computing Mac people challenge: I’m looking for a game but I forgot its name. This would be from the age of beige PowerPC Macs.

Game was slightly inspired on Tron. It had a 3D board divided in squares, with bumps, floating on a black background. Players controlled spheres that would roll and leave a track (each square would be lit with the players color as they rolled over). The goal was forcing other players out of the board by bumping them or forcing them to roll over a track. 1/3

This is why the design trend of using placeholders as field labels is a terrible idea. This dialog showed up like this when I used the “Add Bookmark…” in Safari. What do you think the selected field is for? The bookmarked URL, right?

I can confirm this actually exists! 😁

The bricks are rubber, though, in case anyone had good ideas.

    @Migueldeicaza @schwa @Gte Background daemons are a technicality.

    The real value an App Store could bring would be, for example, protecting against fake trading apps like the ones mentioned here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLPpl2ISKTg

    Guaranteeing a financial app is legit should be a goal, and it fails at that. Having a store that presents itself as vetted, curated and trustworthy, but isn't, is even more dangerous than side-loading since users lower their guard and trust the apps implicitly.

    When you paid off every politician in the US, they just let you do it. You can do anything.

    @Migueldeicaza @schwa The videos aren’t pleasant to watch. It’s disgusting and revolting the western world keeps looking away and justifying this shit, and accepting that members of international organizations simply ignore the judicial decisions of said organizations without consequence.

    This looks really cool. An e-paper like screen but running at 60fps and apparently no ghosting? Can’t wait to see this in person.

    SF Symbols 5 installer is hanging on the authentication window.

    I'm starting to think there is something very wrong with Sonoma and authentication/authorization services. Many of the problems I'm seeing (mounting encrypted disks, now the installer) may be explained by some authentication API never calling its callback.

    It's now April 25 in Portugal. People are out in the streets celebrating the 50 years of the revolution that brought us democracy and freedom from a fascist regime. Unfortunately, tainted by 50 fascist, populist elected MPs just a few months ago. But they will not prevail. Viva o 25 de Abril!

    As much as I’m in favour of banning Cruise self-driven cars, it’s vital to consider the pedestrian dragged by one of their cars was on the floor because they had just been hit by a car driven by a human, something that happens multiple times a day every day, yet nobody even wants to talk about banning those from city streets.

    Long ago, when I left Portugal, I printed some instructions about the network configuration, which included the Airport base stations (my ISP still used PPPoE at the time, yuck!) so my parents could fix anything that came up. Look at how pretty the UI was, even on paper! Why can't we have nice things any more?

    Great news for Toronto, Olivia Chow seems to have won. Looks like Toronto will now have a much more progressive mayor than Vancouver, something that hasn't happened in a long while. Good for Toronto!

    Finished reading “There are no accidents” by Jessie Singer today. A great essay going deep into how blaming human error is a useless strategy pushed by those who directly benefit from the creation and maintenance of highly fallible, error-prone environments where “accidents” are predictable and preventable outcomes. Covers road and transportation safety, and much more. Highly recommended, go grab it from your local library.

    This is one of the worst takes I've seen recently. Not only because it fails to take into account all the cultural differences between US and Europe, but especially:

    1. DMA is NOT a restriction. On the contrary, it forces platform owners to not restrict what users and other companies can do on them, and;

    1. It's ironic to say this when the US has a history of shooting down any Chinese company that dares to be successful and play at the same level, or above, American companies. From Huawei to recently TikTok, the US must win, the good or bad way.

    Europe sustains their regulations on principles. US bases their actions on maintaining their hegemony and position of power, at any cost.

    Idiot driving on the bike lane. Cyclist forced the driver to stop. Driver refused to turn around despite being next to a parkade entrance with plenty of space for manoeuvring, insulted cyclist, switched to the car lane (one way only) and proceeded driving wrong way til the intersection.

    But RoAd SaFeTy Is A ShArEd ReSpOnSaBiLiTy. Sure. The reality is if something doesn’t have (solid and strong) physical barriers around it, someone will drive there.

    The snafu with Jon Stewart was already bad, but one could say it was “just” not renewing the show. But some random Apple employee censoring a Robert De Niro speech?! What the fuck is going on? Once again, as part of the original TV+, this does not make me happy at all. Kudos for De Niro for reading his full speech anyway and calling out the censorship attempt. https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/29/23980781/robert-de-niro-apple-censoring-gotham-awards-speech-donald-trump

    @bigzaphod You can do it using the old photographic method. I used it in my school electronic classes. Print or draw an overlay in black ink that absorbs UV, let it under UV light for the right time, then go through all the chemical baths, and finally manually drill the holes. Or… just order it from a PCB manufacturer. 😄
