    @vicgrinberg Hitchhiker's whale and Star Wars crawl text? I wasn't sure if the latter was on purpose of if the text was just fit onto the plane.

    @vicgrinberg Love it! (I have to admit that I zoomed in hoping that one of the small stars next to the whale was in fact a bowl of petunias 🤓)

    1/ I'm seeing a lot of talk (still!) of defederating mastodon.social over the recent spam attacks. I have a feeling I'm going to regret this, but as someone on that instance with no current plans to move, I feel like there are some things those who are considering it may not be taking into account. There are loads of patronizing comments that people on this instance are "doing the Fediverse wrong". No, we're not. You can't have a democracy while telling others they can't choose where to be.

    @AbandonedAmerica Agreed! I posted something similar a few days ago, pointing out the contrast between Mastodon's openness and the policing tone of some users.

    It's legit to disagree with having the "official" mastodon app direct people to m.s. by default. I'm honestly not sure myself that's the best way to solve the (very real) issues with onboarding. But I've read folks saying it's good that onboarding isn't straightforward because that way only "smart" people can join and... wow, just wow.

    I adore , but there's a stark contrast between the open and customizable nature of the platform and the sense of entitlement and ownership I see in certain users towards newcomers.

    Telling newcomers that the issues they're assuring you they have aren't real, or claiming that <insert possible new feature> will destroy Mastodon even though you can't back it up with actual data, is a terrible communication strategy.

    Build a fence or don't build one, but make up your mind.

    @Jonathanglick Exactly! This is an excellent point. There's a strong selection effect here.

    You're gonna want to check out this image at full screen, trust me.

    Using ESO's VISTA telescope in Chile, astronomers have produced a huge infrared atlas of 5 nearby star-forming regions, revealing details hidden by dust.

    @vicgrinberg Such a great podcast indeed! One of my favourite ones.

    Happy ! Here's a pic I took a few years ago at ESO's Paranal Observatory. No planets were harmed 😉

    These lasers excite sodium atoms 80-90 km above the ground, creating artificial "stars" that we use to correct atmospheric blur and get sharp images.

    I was lucky to get this image chosen as highly commended in the 2020 edition of the Insight Photographer of the Year competition 😊

    Do you also watch the intro for every episode all the way through or are you a monster?

    Let me be frank about my account and what I post: I generally keep my account to my photography. But I am not a "brand". This is my account. I'm a person, not a photo bot.

    I do not appreciate "suggestions" about how/what to post. I'm not rude enough to tell any other accounts what/how to post and I'm not going to be polite when people act that way towards me.

    If that is an issue & you choose to unfollow, so be it. But if you tell me what to post I'm going to tell you to f*** off

    @AbandonedAmerica Well said! Keep doing what you're doing. It's amazing that some people have time to give you unsolicited advice on how to curate your account when they could just easily scroll past, filter out the stuff they don't like, or just unfollow you (their loss!).

    Ooooh, I'm now seeing vertical lines marking different branches in threads, nice! Not sure when this feature was implemented, I'm only seeing it now. A very welcome update!

    Can you trap a galaxy in a crystal ball? I tried! Back in 2018 I took this image of the Milky Way through a crystal ball from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.

    astro_jcm,
    @astro_jcm@mastodon.online avatar

    If you look carefully you can even recognise some constellations. Due to the way the ball projects the image, the constellations in the background and within the ball are symmetric relative to the center of the ball.

    astro_jcm,
    @astro_jcm@mastodon.online avatar

    For those of you into photography, I took this with a Canon 6D and a Rokinon 24 mm lens at f/4, with 30 seconds of exposure time at ISO 6400.

    I placed the ball on top of a handrail, with the camera slightly below it pointing towards the Milky Way, which was close to the horizon at that time.
