11 May 1939 | A French Jewish boy, Alain Kartouzou, was born in Constantine in Algeria.

He arrived at Auschwitz on 30 March 1944 in a transport of 1,000 Jews deported from Drancy. He was among 472 of them murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

11 May 1911 | Jewish man of Polish origin, Josef Grabowski, was born in Poznan. A cantor. After November Pogrom in 1938, he emigrated to Norway and became a cantor in Trondheim.

11 May 1943 | At 7 p.m. in the SS kitchen building, an opera performance of "Charming Maiden" (Bezauberndes Fraulein) by Ralph Benatzky took place. Hella Witt from the Viennese theater "Raimund" played the leading role.

SS men were instructed that their wives were not allowed to sit in the seats designated for the female camp supervisors.

In July 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber.

10 May 1900 | Czech Jewish man, Josef Jelinek, was born in Veliš.

He was deported to from ghetto on 18 December 1943. He did not survive.

10 May 1943 | Three Roma prisoners escaped from the camp: Anton Daniel, Ludvig Daniel & Viktor Daniel.

Ludvig and Viktor Daniel were captured and later imprisoned in the bunkers of Block 11. They were executed by shooting on 22 May 1943.

Anton Daniel after some time was caught and re-sent to Auschwitz. On 31 May 1944, he was sent to the penal company. His fate is unknown.

10 May 1939 | A French Jewish girl, Monique Cofman, was born in Mont-Saint-Aignan.

She arrived at Auschwitz on 8 November 1942 in a transport of 1,000 Jews deported from Drancy. She was among 773 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection.

10 May 1910 | Leon (Leba) Rajbenbach, a Polish Jew, was born in Warsaw to Pinkhus and Braindel. He emigrated to France where he worked as a merchant. During the war, he lived in Paris.

In 1942 he was deported to Auschwitz. He did not survive.

10 May 1943 | Two Roma boys born in the Zigeunerlager at Auschwitz II-Birkenau were registered in the camp. Kurt Devis received no. Z-7646 and Karl Horvath no. Z-7647. They shared the tragic fate of all 378 Roma children born in the camp.

She arrived at Auschwitz on 1 December 1942 and was murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

Brick barracks for prisoners located at the oldest part of the Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp. According to SS plans, each of these barracks was to house over 700 prisoners, but at times even over 1,000 people were held in each.

Yet, in the camp, there was almost no grass.

9 May 1944 | In connection with the planned operation of extermination of Jews from Hungary in Auschwitz, the head of the SS garrison in Auschwitz Rudolf Höss announced a series of directives.

He ordered that the expansion of the platform and a three-track rail connection in Birkenau be sped up, that Bunker 2 (so-called little white house) was to be put back into operation, and incineration pits were to be dug next to it as well next to crematorium no. 5 (in the picture).

The commander of Gleiwitz I sub-camp Otto Moll (in the picture), who was known as an expert in burning bodies in trenches, was promoted to head of all crematoria. Sonderkommando was also enlarged - from 420 to 620 prisoners.

9 May 1945 | The Soviet army liberated the German Nazi concentration camp Stutthof.

Between 1939-45 some 110,000 people were imprisoned there & around 65,000 were killed there (incl. some 28 thousand Jews).
