@auschwitzmuseum As awful (and necessary) as these posts are, there's something about the word "selection" that makes it all the more horrible.

These posts are unquestionably necessary. We must never forget. We have the responsibility to ensure this never happens again.

Re: that last @auschwitzmuseum boost. I went to Auschwitz almost a quarter century ago on a bitterly cold January day. There I am walking through its vile gate.

Some of the hardest hours I've ever experienced in my life. But also some of the most important. And something you should do if you have the opportunity.

We all broke down in various evidence rooms. For me, it was the piles of luggage with carefully lettered names and addresses. As if this journey were one from which they'd return.

A pile of battered luggage -- each dark brown or black suitcase with carefully lettered names and addresses in white.

@Holberg @auschwitzmuseum this post really took me back to my visit in 2017. I was giving a lecture near Auschwitz so I had to take the opportunity to visit. I knew it would be hard, but had no idea how it would affect me. It was surreal.

The entire journey left me speechless. But what I felt most impactful was standing in a gas chamber. Literally inside. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

Every day we commemorate the victims & educate about the tragic human history of .

Auschwitz is a place that shows where hatred, antisemitism and contempt for a fellow man led people decades ago.

It is also a place where we should reflect on our individual and collective responsibility for the world we live in.
