A few times I have told the anecdote that the singly most baffling thing I ever saw in a code review — not the most insecure, just the most “how could a real programmer have written this? how could this ever make sense?” thing — was simply a C++ variable “number_of_trucks” … declared as float. Unambiguously referring to real physical trucks in a fleet.

Reader, it’s been over ten years and I am blowing the gods damn whistle. I had edited that story to protect the guilty: the variable was named number_of_planes. It was shipped by a company whose name begins with “B” and rhymes with “GOING out of business.”

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@0xabad1dea I worked at a large investment bank years ago where all currencies were stored as floats EXCEPT GBP which was store as Ints in pence. (Yes, even Yen that has no fractional value).

Of course, on occasion, some programmer would forget to * or / by 100 to get GBP and all hell would break loose 😂

It rhymed with Reddit and a European Alpine country with a square flag who DID go bust 😂

This. This is so spot on. I could rant for days about the damage Thatcher & Reagan did to the world. People think Obama and the orange guy were consequential presidents - they weren't. They didn't really do anything much. We're still living in a Reagan/Thatcher world!

About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/about-by-pcalc/id1613982997?platform=vision

Hundreds of objects swirl around a PCalc icon.
A lovely view of the public transport options in the PCalc About screen.
A distant dragon watches over the city.

My new app, Audracity, is up in ! It's a very simple game for date nights, parties and families. You choose one or more categories and you'll be taken through hundreds of random, ice-breaker style questions from each category.

is available for iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and Apple Vision Pro.

Repost and help me fill up the beta!

Ten years ago today I gave a talk in Cardiff lamenting the state of software development. Basically talking about enshitification before that word was invented 😀 I fear things have not improved since then!

Every now and then, Labor does something that reminds us they’re genuinely better than the other mob

@corduroy @huwr Education should be free for as long as people can take advantage of it. If we can't even do that as a society, what the fuck are we even doing pretending to be a society?

This is very true.

Reminds me of what one of the devs said at Coles: "The Coles app is an analytics engine that allows you to buy groceries as a side-effect" 😂😭

This is pretty shameless. If you are going to copy @twostraws example code you could at least change it slightly 🤦 Or, y'know, don't copy it and claim it as your own!

I am genuinely shocked at the lengths countries and their media will go to to shut down debate on the ongoing Israeli genocide of the Palestinians.

Germany - of all countries - should know what happens when only one side of a debate is allowed to be heard, for example.

The greatest trick Israel has pulled is to muddy the waters such that they can claim any criticism of their actions is anti-semitic. It's not the same thing, as can be seen by the very many jews who criticise Israel.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@maks That is an interesting video. I watch it and think "yep, tick, tick, tick" they are doing all that. His argument seems to mostly be as long as you don't say in public why you are doing it, it's not genocide. Which seems like too convenient a loophole tbh, I think he's oversimplifying there.

Has anyone thought about what we will do with all the land occupied by service stations? It’s now 5 weeks since I got car-energy away from home.

I think governments will need to spend a fair bit on rehabilitating these polluted sites when the holding companies go broke one-by-one.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold @corduroy Yeah it's taking a LOT longer than I hoped to get reasonably priced EVs.

My experience: we weighed up a BYD Atto vs getting a new Kia Seltos - that's what we had already, basically the same size car. Here's how it priced out.

Yes, I'm fully aware that a 50k car is still way expensive for most people and we were lucky to have something to trade in.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@corduroy There's a new one being built near me - been a very long time since I saw that.

The people I feel sorry for are people who can't afford an EV, they'll be left with old cars and skyrocketing petrol prices.

I feel like my career has absolutely stalled.

Having all of this time to reflect and introspect during my illness and recovery over the past few months has left me wondering what impact I believed I was having on my peers and the people around me over the last decade.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold You've had much more impact than most people I know - specifically with Reveal on a LOT of developers, but also more locally with the people who have been lucky enough to work with you.

As for career, that's a very personal question. I felt the same - in fact I felt I'd gone significantly backwards. But then I realised I don't really care. I'd rather be a good developer working with good people than have a high fallutin' job title and be miserable.

90% (99%?) of the problems you have writing apps are nothing to do with the UI framework you use.

tonyarnold, to random
@tonyarnold@mastodon.social avatar

The interactions between SwiftUI, SwiftData and Swift Concurrency can be confusing.

Because SwiftData Models are retrieved by Views on the MainActor, it's reasonably safe to pass them between Views, but anything around the edges will still force you to drop back to persistent identifiers and looking up the Models — it'd almost be easier to pretend that it's not safe to pass Models between Views, for consistency.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold I installed Sentry recently on a brand new iOS 17 app we're building with SwiftData. It's a standard architecture, no ViewModels, all simple and as Apple recommends kinda thing. Sentry spotted a few places were DB actions were performed off the main thread. (Was impressive actually.)

I "need" a new iPad this year and I'm seriously considering an Android tablet instead. 99% of my tablet usage is watching things so there's no reason I need the extra cost of an iPad for that. The convenience of Notes etc on it is occasionally useful, but I could live without it.

My car has, essentially, an Android tablet in it and it's really good. It's got me thinking maybe that could work.

I was watching a YouTube tutorial on running nix on macOS, nodding along and impressed by defining a setup using a flake file, and then the person said "and now we're going to install homebrew using nix because there are packages in there that aren't in nix” and I nope'd out so hard.

Packagemangerception isn't cool.

bazscott,
@bazscott@mastodon.social avatar

@tonyarnold I used nix at my n-2 job and it's impressive technology but has holes. E.g. it would set up most of a Rails environment but you still had to install Postgres and Redis separately - which are the hard bits! So I never fully saw the appeal over just using asdf or whatever to manage installs.
