Designer. Started that responsive design thing. Writes a bit, or tries to. Spends a normal amount of time thinking about The Locked Tomb series.

A perfectly normal amount of time.

Google in 2024, after worker-led protests around Project Nimbus: “[speak up] over disruptive issues or debate politics”, lose your job. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/04/22/google-nimbus-israel-protest-fired-workers/

@cory I absolutely hear you, Cory; and personally, I couldn’t work there. But I’d just quietly add that Google employs many workers, contract and otherwise, who can’t leave easily, and/or need the job. And — again, just me here — I’m glad there are folks organizing and fighting for something better over there.

@cory Man, yeah — same here, Cory. Same here.

@polotek I spend a lot of time thinking about this stuff, if you ever wanna chat more about it.

I will say that I’ve found a lot of theory/thinking about this leverage question in more established labor circles. For one example, Peter Olney’s done a lot of work to push this idea of “choke points” forward. (https://jacobin.com/2023/02/labor-power-and-strategy-worker-organizing-choke-points was an interview I really enjoyed; the book’s excellent, too.)

beep,
@beep@follow.ethanmarcotte.com avatar

@polotek Yeah, agreed. There’s a line I’ve heard from more than a few organizers: that strikes aren’t a strategy, they’re a tool. You could swap out “strike” for another form of direct action, but the point’s the same: it’s gotta be in service of achieving/getting/winning something.
