Or “where Docker”. I do get it but it is literally a more isolated style of computing. Both in technical as well as social senses.

So a few days ago I asked for help how to record my mains signal with high resolution, because something in my house is eating LED lights. Together with @alzimon & friends we built a setup. Today I got it working here, and lo and behold, there appears to be crap on the wire. 196kHz samples (!). Still need to double check this is not caused by my setup, but it looks reasonably solid:

    @diesch @jpmens From a draft post: "[T]yrants can in the future easily institute a repressive government since social media/the cloud has delivered so much surveillance it would’ve made the Stasi blush."

    Is anyone aware of a streaming data format where you can embed timestamps periodically? And perhaps open it up with a descriptor of what the data is? Sounds a lot like "streaming WAV" in a way. This for efficiently transporting 48kHz samples of voltages.

    More encouragingly the verdict is quite clear that the court is of the opinion that end to end encryption is a very good thing to have, and they believe that backdooring that, or otherwise enabling decryption, would negatively impact all users (including people not targeted) and that this would "not [be] proportionate to the legitimate aims pursued".

    Too funny.. the “Top Read” articles on English yesterday **are all about the ** ! You have to go all the way down to # 16 to find a non-Super Bowl article (the Kenyan runner who died)… and then Super Bowl articles continue after that.

    Predictably the top page is Usher, which you can see as “so who is this guy doing the halftime show?” 🤣

    And then people wanting to learn more about the celebrities hanging out with Taylor Swift 😃

    A fun look into what info people wanted!

    bert_hubert,
    @bert_hubert@fosstodon.org avatar

    @danyork editors struggle with this as you probably know. An item that took weeks of work on something important gets 500 readers. And a puff piece on a celebrity’s new shoes 200,000.

    Turning on the batsign. @revk you are my only hope. I've been aching to build some kind of power quality monitor, something that currently costs like 10k in relevant currencies. But I think we could do so much better. Here's the idea: https://berthub.eu/tmp/sampler.pdf - you in?

    "Atlantic Ocean circulation nearing ‘devastating’ tipping point, study finds" is the news this week. This is not a one off result, it is not a blip, this has been an ongoing worry for a while. I covered this in my July 2023 overview of where we stand with the climate, and what might happen. Might be worth a read: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/on-climate-change-and-management/

    "To be good with technology requires actually doing technology" - it is so sad that we have to point this out today. You can't outsource all the things you do and assume you'll continue to be in control of what you do. @C__CS and I wrote some words on Dutch .NL registry @SIDN's plan to move its platform to a Canadian venture running on an American cloud. They say this is necessary because no one in Europe can provide the technology that can run a domain registry. This does not appear to be true however: https://www.techpolicy.press/the-dangers-of-moving-key-internet-governance-functions-to-amazons-cloud-the-case-of-the-netherlands/

    Okay, so I did a quick dive into sudo in Windows and here are my initial findings. https://www.tiraniddo.dev/2024/02/sudo-on-windows-quick-rundown.html

    The main take away is, writing Rust won't save you from logical bugs :)

    bert_hubert,
    @bert_hubert@fosstodon.org avatar

    @tiraniddo A point also made in https://spectrum.ieee.org/lean-software-development - we've not made a lot of progress in preventing or detecting logic bugs.

    Dutch intelligence & security agencies MIVD and @aivd have just published details of a Fortigate/Fortinet Remote Access Trojan that they found on an unclassified network. They attribute it to Chinese actors. I note this same thing frequently. https://mastodon.social/@deprogrammaticaipsum@mas.to/111872970149538242

    But I think it's more than just a disdain for history. Many of my peers have lived thru all these cycles. Why aren't they all speaking up each time? I believe there's a massive failing in education because there's zero continuity, not enough people are passing on their gained experience to the cohorts just a few years behind them. So every generation builds the world again from scratch, instead of enhancing what's already been built.

    @hyc we're old men yelling at clouds. One problem is that some of us old men are against anything that is new, and that makes it easy to label us as simply conservative. Whereas everyone should of course realize how wise we are ;-)
