Card 024: Dr. Strange

According to Jusko, one of the factors that determined use of a closeup was the level of interest he had in the character

I love how Strange's 1st cover appearance qualifies on the barest technicality

Those who wish to reach it must traverse a perilous aerial path.

One of my favorite myths featuring a serpent is from the Bunun people in Taiwan.

It's a flood myth where the flood is made worse by a giant serpent blocking the rivers. People seek shelter on a mountain, and even their best warriors can't kill the serpent.

Then a giant crab appears and offers help. People make a giant clay pot as armor for him, and he puts it on still hot to rush into the fray.

The hero-crab vanquishes the serpent in an epic battle 🦀 🐍

This week's theme is serpents 🐍
Snakes are associated with various Greek deities such as Apollon, Asklepios, Demeter, Dionysos, and even Hermes. The Erinyes (Furies) are said to have snakes for hair, as is Eris, Goddess of Discord. Today, I'm telling you the story of Asklepios and his staff, the symbol of medicine. In the US, it is often confused with Hermes' staff, the symbol of commerce...

@mythology One day, the son of King Minos of Crete and Pasiphaë fell into a jar of honey and died. When they couldn't find him, the desperate parents even went to the Oracle of Delphi for help. She told them: "A marvelous creature has been born amongst you: whoever finds the true likeness for this creature will also find the child."
Asklepios hears of the plight of Minos and Pasiphaë, possibly from his father Apollon (pure speculation on my part).

Near Bad Sülz, a publican's young son became best of friends with a magical animal.

Sadly, this friendship did not last past his adulthood...

I love this era of Cable, when nothing concrete had been established yet and creators outside the X-office have to make trading cards for him. This is probably one of the last cards of that era.

The fairy flag is believed to be a very powerful magical object, it was given by a fairy royal (her shawl) to calm her crying child that she could not be with and was used by clans as a flag through out the years. It was believed to have many powers.

Cauldrons are amongst the most magical objects across the Celtic world. Bodies of water are sacred gateways to the Otherworld, so a contained body of water in a cauldron becomes a way to control magic item. Welsh Ceridwen brews her white witch potions in her cauldron; another Weldh cauldron revives the dead, and the Irish Dagda gives bountiful feasts from his Cauldron of Plenty.

A queen of the dwarves once prophesized to Count Otto of Oldenburg that his line would prosper if he drank from her drinking horn - but doom if he did not.

Alas, he simply stole the horn without drinking from it.
