Is there any interesting writing on what I conceive of as "the Borland aesthetic" ?

The gray frames. The blue backgrounds. Menu text with the red letter indicating a hot key. Modal dialogs with drop shadows.

According to Wikipedia 2.0 in 1987 was the first blue screen version of Borland Turbo C.

Did Borland originate this?

Left from #PyConUS about 33 hrs ago. Had a scratchy throat this morning w/ a negative test and just now have a positive test.

I went out with various groups, unmasked, throughout the weekend. This was a risk I was willing to take. Still, I'm glad I was wearing a mask in the convention center around folks who did not choose to take that same risk.

I'm gonna go rest now.

@tylerdave oh no! Def rest up, & hope the symptoms remain mild. Thanks for sharing, too.

Was chatting about at dinner one PyCon evening (pretty sure with @davidism) and it struck me today (as my “anime OP/ED" playlist was playing) that we never brought up one of my favorite Kanno works, the soundtrack.

Especially the main theme, "Moon”, whose vocal performance is credited to one Gabriela Robin…eventually revealed to be a pseudonym of Kanno herself! Turns out she can compose /and/ sing (and how.)

@SnoopJ well. you gotta quantify the statement. there is a WHOLE LOTTA GUNDAM and it's not all good (imho).

Turn A is pretty good though. A bit offbeat and weird. But it's well made and has heart.

And giant robots. Which stand out a bit since much of the setting is /not/ giant robot tech levels…

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@SnoopJ Other Gundams that are good, and stand alone (one reason a lot of gundam is hard to get into/recommend is that many of them are in the same timeline and may assume prior knowledge) are the most recent, Witch of Mercury, and the previous entry, Iron-Blooded Orphans.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@SnoopJ Gundam Wing, via Toonami, was my intro to the franchise! I liked it a lot despite the very heavy-handed anti-war message.

Sadly when I tried to rewatch it years later it didn't hold up for me. Partly because most of its character work is real flat. In its defense that's /usually/ not a franchise strong point.

Still dig its soundtrack tho.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@SnoopJ kids these days don't know how good they've got it, with their crunchies roll and flicksy nets and entire zipcodes' worth of manga in every B&N… 👴🏻✊🏻

It's nice I get notified when someone edits a post I've favorited/boosted... but how do I see what was changed?

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@FunkyBob Client-dependent, eg Ivory shows (attached), and IIRC the default web UI has something similar.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@FunkyBob @rixx To be fair, Ivory's doesn't do diffs yet either, it's also just the list-o-versions. Same on mastodon-web.

Home, tired. Downside of mere 6-day trips (especially ones where 2 full days are travel) is they're /just/ long enough to get used to the new context, and then BLAMMO, it gets taken away again.

Also, Pennsylvania is very pretty to drive through…IF you can ignore the repetition of

  • Jesus billboard
  • Gun billboard
  • Child abuse billboard
  • Trump billboard

in various combinations.

And? Highly amusing: as soon as one gets within 20 miles of the NJ border, /all/ the drivers speed way up.

bitprophet,

@onelson @basepi anyway so the "regular teas" (typically peach, sometimes raspberry or lemon flavored) still have cane sugar added, but “merely" 36-ish grams.

I just kicked off PyCon 2024 with the first talk of the Language Summit (and my first talk at PyCon!): "Should Python adopt CalVer?" It was an interesting discussion, let's see!

The view of the language summit from the lectern.

bitprophet,
@bitprophet@social.coop avatar

@hugovk nicely done presentation! and slowly continuing to erode my own “nooo I’m so invested in SemVer” position re: CalVer.

A slight tangent: are you aware of Rust’s “editions” concept? I found it a really interesting approach to thinking about compatibility over multi-year timescales. It also embeds some aspects of CalVer. https://doc.rust-lang.org/edition-guide/editions/index.html

(Clarity: not necessarily suggesting editions as a “so we can keep SemVer!” solution, I assume they’d go great with CalVer too.)
