TikTok, I’m not going to buy that gift wrapping cutter so just give it up and let me watch dog videos. Ugh! Makes me want to go do something productive.

#TIL that this George Harrison song is “When we was fab” and not “When we was fat”. It’s been 30 years.

Over the past year, my digital interests have really boomed. When I sit down at my computer, I'm finding myself having to ask "What should I work on right now?" and the answer is now "The thing that would remove the most stress from my life" followed by "The thing that would bring me the most happiness". Sometimes those are one and the same, but not always.

If it says MAP in their profile that means
Minor Attracted Person or Masquerading Asshole Pedophile.

I just had to look that up.

"Going anywhere for the holidays?"
"Yes, upstate."
"Plane or car?"
"Oh Jesus no! Train."
"How long will that take?"
"9 hours. But my vacation starts when I get on the train, not when I get off the plane. It's much less stressful."
"You know... I can see that..."

Folks, I may have a made a convert today. Let's be real. Driving is work, and flying is torture. A train ride, might seem "long" but did you count all the time you spend getting to the airport, the security checks? The silly rules?

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Here in Austin, TX we unfortunately do not have great train options, but in the past few years, a bus line popped up that travels between Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston that is wonderful. Hop on, be pampered like first class (at cheap airline rates) for 4-5 hours, and not have to worry about driving.

I had a 10 hour road trip today, so loaded up on podcasts - for the most part, they were related to the ActivityPub/Mastodon and extremely interesting. Sharing the list of episodes from my instance. Lots of big names in the fediverse here.

If you know of any more, please reply with your suggestions and I'll add 'em to the list.

If you only listened to one of the mentioned podcast, I'd highly recommend this 3 part series from @librelounge that deep dives into the ActivityPub protocol. From 2019, but still completely relevant today.

People can be disappointing. Tonight while taking our little ones and the dogs for a walk to big German shepherds came out and attacked our dogs. I had to use what we had to defend ourselves as my daughters watched in horror, they are 6 and 3 years old. Fortunately, I got them separated enough but my 6 year old tried to return b/c she wanted to protect our dogs. My wife was screaming for help and no one did anything. A lady, who turned out to be the owner called her dogs inside. She was dismissive and told us that their dogs don’t attack and that they’re trained support dogs. Her husband came out saying the same thing, as if we just made up a story smh. I kept my composure, I did what I could’ve to protect my family. I love dogs but if they would’ve harmed my children I would’ve killed them.

@damon Keeping your composure is better than I would have done. I'm sorry you and your family had to go through that. Hope you're all ok.

Spoutible offers investment opportunities to users, raises almost $250,000 in a day. Some users didn’t realize it was an investment, thought it was a donation…

Has Mastodon ever raised $250,000 in a day? How do we make that happen?

@eloquence I personally wouldn’t mind a once a year organized fundraiser. Red Nose Day, or. John Mastodon Day 😅…something along those lines would go over well…maybe.

Owncast release days are good days.

Unless they're bad. Then they're not good. Hopefully this is a good one.

Finally trying out the Wayback Machine Tweets archive tool https://archive.org/services/wayback-gsheets/archive-your-tweets

I thought it'll copy all posts into the "archive", but it actually generates a CSV file of links from tweets.js, to be uploaded to Google Sheets, then batch process them one-by-one.

I have 51K+ posts, but CSV shows 37K+ links. When importing file into Google Sheets, it has a limit of 40K rows.

I thought the batch process will take few hours, but… turns out it'll be roughly 16 days 🫠

@cheeaun Wish I had known own about this before I deleted mine. Oh well, I’ve got my own archive.

Internet search sucks now.

Making a classic "search engine" requires obscene amounts of money and resources, so creating direct competition is not a realistic option.

But what if we had a way to each take our own personal bookmarks and link collections, and share them, using a federated protocol?

My fifty sites, your sixty-five links, some friends and their contributions... All hand-selected and vetted, manually tagged and organized by real people... Hosted on small, volunteer-run servers...

What if web search results were organized not by "how many ad dollars did this site generate for the search company" but rather something like "someone you know directly tagged this site, and someone twice-removed tagged this other site so it's lower priority"?

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@mordremoth Postmarks is a federated bookmarking service using tags and search. The project is fairly new. It’s a start tho. Your links are federated and appear in timelines of others, you can follow, etc. Easy to setup on Glitch, too!
