I wonder who replies/acts to political text messages. I have never signed up for them, and I do not trust anyone reaching out to me via text (that I don’t previously know).

I find that the easier it gets to find people, the less useful that is. Same with email etc.

Why is Apple’s auto correction constantly getting worse? It’s starting to change correctly spelled words here and there and tries to create sentences I never once intended to write.

Is there some LLM hell that’s happening? It’s a terrible user expertise for sure. And Apple needed to fix their auto correction in the first place, but somehow didn’t opposite:(

Okay, so I showed the "Pianogate" video to my Chinese wife, and she has a perspective that I hadn't even considered.

She thinks that Dr. K is a big colossal asshole for not agreeing to the Chinese groups' request to not be filmed.

"But what about the UK's right to film in public?" I asked her.

And she told me, "Okay, yeah, you have that right. But there's a reason these folks probably don't want to be filmed and that's because they don't want to be seen outside China. Whatever they do outside China affects their families in China. If the Chinese government perceives you as screwing up abroad, they will also hold that screw up over your family."

"But these people probably work for the CCP," I told her.

"Yeah," she said, "But that's all the more reason for them to be concerned about being filmed. You think people back in China want to see the CCP living it up in the UK? And CCP people have families too -- their families have nothing to do with this, but they're the ones who will be penalized for this viral video."

Then my wife looked at me with a very serious expression, and she said, "Look, this white guy is clearly just antagonizing the Chinese for views. He thinks it's a big laugh. But while he's laughing and getting his views, who are the ones getting hurt? He never thought about the actual consequences to families, did he?"

"They're already talking about this on WeChat and Weibo," I told her.

"Well," she stated, "Then I expect the worst."

Sometimes I read about people asking for a taxpayer-paid, publicly-owned social media platform, and I wonder what that would look like in the US thanks to our government’s 1st Amendment obligations. How much power would the agency who runs it even have to moderate Nazis and abuse? Any power to control abuse will be weaponized by regressive states to control progressive speech. Is a public social media stratum really going to be better than the Fediverse?

And think of the surveillance that might occur. I’m pretty sure a government-run platform will pretty quickly require real ID checks for accounts for “security” reasons and to participate in any government business online.

I understand the desire for a truly democratized, money-is-not-speech communications platform. But a common transport layer for messages is only the beginning. Who does the administration? Will they do better than today’s private counterparts? How will admin powers not be abused to silence legitimate dissent?

For every new version of iOS I use, I swear the auto correction is getting worse. It swaps
in words that aren’t even close to what I intended, and even swaps correctly spells words at times.

Is this some AI malarkey? Just worse algorithms? It was already not great at fixing spelling mistakes sadly:(

@atomicpoet Did you see that the PS4/PS5 is dropping twitter integration? I think that’s good.

But I wonder what it would take for them to get fediverse integration. I usually don’t see it as a good thing to get massive corporations that can outspend any small outfit involved in the fediverse.

But this is much more of a one way thing so I think it’s a win win. Share on Mastodon would be a cool thing.

(Same goes for other similar products, I just happened to see the news about PS.)

Random thing of the day. Been playing Forza lately, and even though I don’t directly play online people they do show the names/cars of real players (I assume) for the other cars I race against.

Almost none of them have the female body type. (Their avatar that is.)

I wonder why. There could be many explanations, but I just got curious. I know gaming isn’t the boys club I never wanted it to be anyway, but I see 0-1 females out of 23 (plus me). Mario Kart isn’t like that at all.

Project Retro Table is a mess, like all my projects.

But the #IIGS works, has the 8MB expansion card, and I have no clue on how to use these computers. :/

The biggest issue is that I need a floppy emulator, and probably some form of mass storage. I’m thinking that the ReActiveMicro Drive/Turbo is a front runner, but no idea about floppy yet. I have a real 3.5”, which is neat though.

Also the space bar seems to be missing a spring. It’s wonky as heck.

Bah. Didn’t run out of battery on my ancient hand me down from my wife Apple Watch once with WatchOS 9. Even for very long days. I use it for very little on average.

Now I end up on red almost every single day, and today it ran out completely. So well over a year problem free. Now a fail.

It’s a QA failure, which means it’s a management failure. :( You tell us how impressive your performance per watt is. Now impress us with an efficient OS.

What’s the opinion on the #Apple #IIGS? What mods are common? What cool stuff is a must? What HDMI solution do people use? Is extra memory and a faster CPU worth it? Or even cheap enough?

I’d like to know as I did something stupid and it’s arriving tomorrow (with 3.5” drive, keyboard, and mouse).

I know of the pi zero way (have that going for other cases) but I need one this #Amiga500 and the #Amiga1200 (the 1940 only accepts 230/240 volt 50hz I’m afraid:/ and the fancy internal solution is over $200 and scary).

#c64 (#C128!) What are the best terminal programs for a C64/128, and best way to run it? For a Kung Fu Flash, Pi1541, and an Easy Flash 3 :)

Also, is eBay the best place for C64 serial cables? Or is there some cheaper way since it’s technically a 6 pin DIN? Wanted to stock up on a few.

Can’t believe anything like GamerGate happened, and I can’t believe believe people still identify as “GamerGaters”.

In some ways, it shouldn’t surprise me. GamerGate was the proof of concept for later conspiracy theory communities like Q Anon.

@vga256 Been reading tomo.cafe, and the thing I get back to is that I don't think having a single giant hierarchical tree for everyone is a good idea.

It scales poorly, doesn't take groups breaking apart into consideration, and deals poorly with locality (music-scene, does that go under art.music.* or country.region.*?).

I have some thoughts on how it could be solved, but it's still pretty fuzzy in my head.

Other than that it sure looks interesting :)

Stella went in to surgery this week, for what looked very operable tumors. She initially did well, but has taken a turn for the worse. She’s on oxygen and I just visited her, it might have been the last time I ever saw her.

She’s a rescue and the nicest dog I have ever met. She loves everyone unconditionally. I’ve been crying. I almost never cry.

Go hug your pets if you have them. We don’t deserve them, but they deserve our best.
