@ActionRetro I was kinda hoping that you’d read what was on those old drives. A cheap way to dump retro computer harddrives wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Also you need one of those insane 15krpm drives. They have the craziest noises:)

Do not understand why people always use bloated third party json libraries and then complain about it when I've seen people using pico 8 create json (de)serializers in like 15 lines of code

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Do you happen to have that code a link away perhaps? Tried searching and, yeah, no, nope.

Why? Because I’m curious. I think we all who can code should share little code snippets now and then (and I’ve been bad at it) simply because it would make all of us collectively both think and discuss.

And it will help people starting out too I think.

i wonder why other devs don't seem to localize to (brazilian) portuguese. the 2nd highest country for wishlists for kitsune tails is brazil (7% vs USA 40%), and historically we've had lots of sales from brazil. i get that the price per unit for that region is low but come on that's still a lot of fans you're leaving out in the cold by not localizing your game for them

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Genuine question, got any idea of if the increased sales would cover the cost of a translation? I feel that even if it’s a wash it means a potentially bigger audience and a translator gets paid.

(Since I prefer English even if my native tongue is supported I genuinely have no clue. And a fair number of people do speak English as well.)

drahardja, to generativeAI
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

Much as I dislike the theft of human labor that feeds many of the #generativeAI products we see today, I have to agree with @pluralistic that #copyright law is the wrong way to address the problem.

To frame the issue concretely: think of whom copyright law has benefited in the past, and then explain how it would benefit the individual creator when it is applied to #AI. (Hint: it won’t.)

Copyright law is already abused and extended to an absurd degree today. It already overreaches. It impoverishes society by putting up barriers to creation and allowing toll-collectors to exist between citizen artists and their audience.

Labor law is likely what we need to lean on. #unions and #guilds protect creators in a way that copyright cannot. Inequality and unequal bargaining power that lead to exploitation of artists and workers is what we need to address head-on.

Copyright will not save us.

“AI "art" and uncanniness”

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja @pluralistic You are right that copyright can’t save us, but I think Pandora’s box is open and we can’t close it again. Whether we want to or not. As pro union/guild that I am (hint: a lot) I see this as loosing battle.

We are seeing the move to post scarcity right now. Art can be copied for virtually no cost at this point. With data breaches almost daily on top of that.

I think taxes and UBI might be the only way. At least it’s the only thing I can come up with myself.

You know, lately I've noticed there's been a lot of anger circulating on the Fediverse.

I have to admit, in the past, I may have unintentionally contributed to the confrontational atmosphere by responding in a rather abrupt manner. However, I genuinely don't want to add fuel to the fire. That's why I'm making a conscious effort to be more mindful of my tone.

Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to making the Fediverse a more positive, constructive, and safe space. I truly believe that engaging in dialogue that reflects these values is key. I must confess, though, it's not always easy for me because I struggle with understanding how my words can be perceived.

Nevertheless, I'm genuinely committed to creating a more welcoming environment here. I'll do my utmost to make that happen!

I do applaud everyone wanting to have a warmer tone, I think it makes things better. But I’ve found that I rather block than reason with people on mastodon, as I won’t get reason back, just anger:(

The last time I played Soulcalibur, it was with Soulcalibur II on the Gamecube. Prior to that, I played the original both in the arcade and on Dreamcast.

So I finally got to try Soulcalibur VI on PC. Graphically, it’s very impressive. And the controls are quite nice too.

However, the arcade mode is unimpressive. It’s too easy, and you don’t get to fight a final boss.

No, to fight the final boss, you have to go on a quest. And when it comes to fighting games, I’m just not into quests.

Still, this is 90% off on Steam right now, so it might still be worth it for you.

@atomicpoet Mixing game genres isn’t additive, it’s a Venn diagram. The more you add, the smaller the colored in center becomes.

Sometimes, once in a while, someone strikes it out of the park and just comes up with something bafflingly good.

Most of the time that fails.

Traditional blogs don’t federate, but with the power of , they do.

You can make a blog federate with the ActivityPub for WordPress plugin.

With , I don’t need a plugin. Federation happens by default.

So there you have it. Blogging is for the Fediverse. Some people don’t like that, but those people don’t decide what gets to be federated.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

Would be neat to bring some of the best features from other blogs to those viewing activity pub feeds.

Didn't think this would happen, but is now the 2nd most popular server software on the and is on the verge of cracking 400,000 accounts.

I'm actually shocked that it blew past so quickly because the Misskey migration took three months to hit 300,000 accounts.

With all the drama happening elsewhere on the Fediverse, it important to remember that this is the biggest growth we've experienced in six months!

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@atomicpoet Reddit has a different userbase, it’s focused on the posts rather than the poster.

And the userbase is massive, so 1M users here and there can show up. What stops people is lack of content (I’m trying kbin and it’s a ghost town for the categories I’m interested in).

For microblogging I can’t keep up with even a few hundred people. I need to prune:(

atomicpoet, to random

To be 100% honest, I'm not happy with calckey.social right now. It's incredibly buggy and laggy 😣

I personally apologize for this incredibly frustrating experience. Believe me, I feel it.

In fact, the reason I've been so quiet today is:

  1. I don't want to stress the server more than it already is
  2. I've been on the phone discussing its very real performance issues

The good news: there's going to be a server upgrade in a few hours that I hope will alleviate this problem.

@atomicpoet Actually this is good. Now we know the weaknesses and it can be worked on. This isn’t a failure, it’s an opportunity!

atomicpoet, to random

It’s not a terrible idea to create a network of interest-based Mastodon servers, but there’s an easier way to do the same thing.

Create one server that can host groups. Allow people from other servers to participate in those groups.

This is what I do with venera.social, and it’s what I will do with calckey.social once Channels start federating.
