i wonder why other devs don't seem to localize to (brazilian) portuguese. the 2nd highest country for wishlists for kitsune tails is brazil (7% vs USA 40%), and historically we've had lots of sales from brazil. i get that the price per unit for that region is low but come on that's still a lot of fans you're leaving out in the cold by not localizing your game for them

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Genuine question, got any idea of if the increased sales would cover the cost of a translation? I feel that even if it’s a wash it means a potentially bigger audience and a translator gets paid.

(Since I prefer English even if my native tongue is supported I genuinely have no clue. And a fair number of people do speak English as well.)

drahardja, to generativeAI
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

Much as I dislike the theft of human labor that feeds many of the #generativeAI products we see today, I have to agree with @pluralistic that #copyright law is the wrong way to address the problem.

To frame the issue concretely: think of whom copyright law has benefited in the past, and then explain how it would benefit the individual creator when it is applied to #AI. (Hint: it won’t.)

Copyright law is already abused and extended to an absurd degree today. It already overreaches. It impoverishes society by putting up barriers to creation and allowing toll-collectors to exist between citizen artists and their audience.

Labor law is likely what we need to lean on. #unions and #guilds protect creators in a way that copyright cannot. Inequality and unequal bargaining power that lead to exploitation of artists and workers is what we need to address head-on.

Copyright will not save us.

@drahardja @pluralistic You are right that copyright can’t save us, but I think Pandora’s box is open and we can’t close it again. Whether we want to or not. As pro union/guild that I am (hint: a lot) I see this as loosing battle.

We are seeing the move to post scarcity right now. Art can be copied for virtually no cost at this point. With data breaches almost daily on top of that.

I think taxes and UBI might be the only way. At least it’s the only thing I can come up with myself.

@drahardja You have to hand it to DeLorean, his downfall was at least interesting in a crime movie type of way.

i sure hope nobody figures out that kitsune tails save files are just a proprietary binary version of json thats fairly human readable and so easy to reverse engineer and hacks them for their own purposes 🥺

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko Yes! That’s the spirit.

Let people play games the way they want. It’s ok to cheat in single player games or if everyone’s in on it.

When you release World of Kitsune Tails, then it’s time to stop cheating.

Adding a README.md would be an amazing move imho.

@orci I was kind of amazed to find out that there are black squirrels (got one or two in the yard here), white ones (both albino and just white fur), and red ones (and not the superior and more awesome looking Sciurus Vulgaris).

This on top of the normal gray ones. And I’ve seen all four (no albino afaik) in the cities myself.

Did they keep interacting through the window or was it a lucky quick shot? It’s a great photo!

drahardja, to apple
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

Man, not again. sells seriously under-specced devices to maintain their “starting from…” price and then upselling people to actually-usable models. Remember those 16 GB flash iPhones they kept selling (2010–2016! I checked!), even though that meant people didn’t even have enough space to update their OS? 8 GB RAM is that, once more, but for runtime memory.

I think the 256 GB flash, 8 GB RAM minimum-spec Mac is a low-resource trap for anyone who wants to use a computer for more than light web browsing (and I mean light—web pages are resource hogs these days) or a messaging client. They are certainly not suitable for anyone wanting to locally store or edit media.

For 2024, I think 512 GB flash and 16 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Air, while 1 TB and 32 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Pro.

“Apple argues in favor of selling Macs with only 8GB of RAM”

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja Apple’s memory prices (RAM and disk) have been my biggest gripe with the hardware since I got my first Mac. They are terrible and it irks me. I think it will end up biting them in the end.

The rampant pillaging and straight-up “appropriation” of human-generated training data from the Internet—without compensation—is a hallmark of many of today’s giants. Now that they are starting to step on some wealthy toes, I think litigation is about to smack them down hard this year. NYTimes got a head start; who’s next?

@drahardja I wonder if being an early adopter is getting less and less worth it.

It can conceptually be a lot of fun, but if all it ends up being is not working or not actually doing what it was said it was going to do…

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja It felt incredibly hand wavy and I never heard a single explanation of what it’s actually meant to do. So it felt like a no brainer to avoid.

But I wonder if the ratio has changed over time. Is it getter harder to actually come up with and execute a new good product in 2024? Or is it just in my head?

@TechConnectify @vl_tone @teotwaki YouTube has started to do this thing where the third suggestion on the “the video is done” screen (AppleTV) is some very low view video that still seems to be in a category similar to what I usually watch.

The idea of giving the little guy a shot now and then feels good.

@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

It's weird some people here have such issues with reply guys. Mostly when I post about nerdy shit people are pretty universally positive in the replies until posts get to 100-200 boosts, and then yeah my posts get solidly into the long tail of bad replies and I tend to mute em

I'm starting to wonder if this is a small server vs large server thing, since PMG is tiny compared to the big well known servers. Only reason I can come up with for the discrepancy in experience

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko I’m genuinely nervous about being seen as one. I generally just like to chat with people and feel isolated and lonely. It’s not that I try to bring in a bunch of negativity or be contrarian, I just want to hang around cool people.

I wonder if the type of comments change when it goes from people who follow you (I.e. I know a bit about what you do for a living and topics you’ve brought up before) and boosts into random people.

Similar to small vs large, as it’s about proximity.

There is far too much 'walking on eggshells" in , mostly because the power lies with the people that are the most easily offended. I've been clobbered for saying the " of opensource isn't great". The advice is always the same:

  • Go slow
  • Don't rock the boat
  • Make small changes

That is great advice, for a dysfunctional relationship. To be clear, I'm NOT saying be dictatorial! I'm saying we can't fix a system that doesn't want to be fixed.
