@juliank that's almost as bad as the USA

bremner,

@juliank I was generously considering the Republican party as less uniformly fash than the AfD.

bremner,
@bremner@mathstodon.xyz avatar

It used to be a trope that the Democratic party would be considered center right in most "civilized" countries, but I think both the Democrats and the world moved. Anyway, really talking outside my expertise now.

Germany currently has a ticket that allows you to use all regional trains in the whole country!

Today, I wanna play a game of random travel with it!

And I need your help: During my trip, I'll post a couple of short-running polls, and you can vote for which train I should take, or where to get off. 😆

My hope is to see new places and get lost! I'll make up the rules as I go.

I will start at Hamburg Central Station. First poll soon!

Based on the "Fair use" standards established by Google, OpenAI, and fellow wannabe-AI-oligarchs I will consider it OK to pirate your movie unless the first 10 frames contain a machine readable sonnet in baudot. I reserve the right to change the poetry genre and encoding without notice. Thank you for your contribution to a brighter future.

    @mogul @Teri_Kanefield I don't understand what the practical effect of cancelling Trump's business certificates in New York is. I read a NY Times article, from which learned that they didn't understand either 😉

    @johncarlosbaez @mogul @Teri_Kanefield I might be just ignorant, but what does it mean to "lose control"? Forced liquidation? No more rent? Some kind of arms length trust? Nationalization and conversion to affordable housing? (OK, pretty sure not the last one).

    Ok, I have to ask. What is pumpkin spice? Pumpkin has absolutely no flavour, so what is it? White pepper in pumpkin shaped containers?

    bremner,
    @bremner@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @loke Probably "pumpkin pie spice" would be a better name. There are several variations, but cinnamon and nutmeg are common elements.

    @paulralph @academicchatter Yeah, one day I mean to name and shame all of the Elsevier journals using their broken database to send me Organic Chemistry [1] papers to review, and then revoking the invitations after a week. They claim the invitations are confidential, to which I say, come at me spamming motherfuckers.

    [1]: spoiler, I didn't even take high school level organic chemistry.

    [2]: You should treat this invitation, the manuscript and your review

    Dear

    I run a "minimal" system based on , but I'd like my laptop to suspend or shutdown when the battery power gets too low, to avoid running the battery right to zero. What is a reasonable to do this? seems like it might be part of the answer, but it seems like it is mainly glue to provide non-root users the ability to suspend etc...

    Urgent, boosts appreciated: My web host, Heart Internet, is imploding (I found this out AFTER I'd paid them for a year's worth of dedicated server up front) and I need recommendations for a company doing dedicated servers. Please, PLEASE only tell me about companies that you personally have used and have positive firsthand experience with, please don't just google this for me.

    EDIT: I'm going with Hetzner, thanks to your recommendations and the recommendations of folk I know IRL and was able to chat with face-to-face, thanks everyone for boosting this so widely and giving me so many excellent recs, there's no need to boost this post any more, you are all wonderful

    EDIT 2: folk asking how I know Heart's winding up, check out the TrustPilot reviews from mid-August on, you gotta read between the lines a bit but the takeaway is a) they're doing the "whoops we're experiencing unusually high volume of support requests" thing, b) at least one support team member is going "Screw it, here's how to transfer your domains to someone else." I assume that's why y'all are still boosting this lol

    EDIT 3: maybe y'all are still boosting this because the "I'm asking for firsthand experience pls don't just google it for me" bit is Resonating with you, I want to let you know that it annoys me as much as it annoys you. A fun game to play when someone does that is to ask them how they know, and when they say google, pretend not to know what that is and ask them to explain it

    bremner,
    @bremner@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @ifixcoinops If you consider hosting in europe a plus, Hetzner is worth a look. I find them pretty pleasant to deal with, and reasonable, if not rock bottom cheap. Otherwise I have somewhat mixed reviews of OVH (Canada and France are possible data centers). They keep things running, but support is pretty lowest common denominator. And you have to read the fine print about what your server includes.

    GitHub is "funny".

    They will sign "my" commits done in the web UI using some weird own key (https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/about-commit-signature-verification). Fine.

    But they will also re-sign my commit and strip my signature from a PR that was merged using "squash" (as that new commit is now "created" in the web UI).

    That's kinda weird…

    I'm wondering if and how the greetings in Southern Germany ("Grüß Gott" short for "Grüß dich, Gott"; "greetings to you, god" sorta) got there from Ireland.

    They are clearly related to Gaeilge greetings, and that's a theory they originated that way but it seems there's no proof.

    I have so many questions about what just happened with Voyager 2. But let's review:

    On August 20, 1977, Voyager 2 was launched from Earth.

    In December 1977, it entered the asteroid belt.

    In June 1978, its main radio receiver failed. Since then it's been using the backup receiver!

    On July 9, 1979, it flew past many of Jupiter's moons, made its closest approach to Jupiter, and took tons of beautiful pictures.

    On August 26, 1981 it shot past Saturn and took tons of beautiful pictures.

    On August 25, 1989 it shot past Neptune and took tons of beautiful pictures.

    On November 5, 2018 it crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space, 120 times farther from the Sun than we are.

    On July 18, 2023, it overtook Pioneer 10 and became the second farthest man-made object from the Sun.

    3 days later, some idiot sent a command that pointed its high gain antenna 2 degrees away from Earth. HOW EXACTLY DID THIS HAPPEN?

    On August 4, 2023, NASA used its most high-powered transmitter to successfully command Voyager 2 to reorient towards Earth, resuming communications. HOW WAS THAT POSSIBLE?

    Voyager 2 is now 133 AU away. How can you "shout" across such a distance and attract the attention of someone who is not looking in your direction? That's very far. It takes light about 18 hours to travel that far.
