blizzard

I wrote this last year during the winter blizzard. Today's weather is rain and record temps.

It looks like Grand Marais, Minnesota broke a weather record last night. The low temp was 38°F. As far as I can tell that's the highest low temp in over 100 years of records. It matches the highest low for all of December. This only occurred three other times in December on December 1, 1916, December 15, 1998, and December 28, 1928.

The lowest recorded temp in December was set on December 26, 1917. It was -34°F.

Regarding the situation:

Are there any non-shitty options for writers who want to get paid for their articles and writings?

This is of personal interest to me as well - I fortunately avoided Substack, but I am on Patreon, which seems to be going through its own enshittification cycle.

I know that discussing things like "monetizing the " are unpopular, but we still need to survive in this Capitalist hellhole we all live in - and I'd like it if there was some way of doing that as a writer without being dependent on dubious large platforms whose corporate owners put short-term profits over ethics every time.

I designed a sticker with the new Minnesota state flag. I ordered a bunch of them in a 2-inch size.

I'm going to give away about 50 of them if I can figure out how to do it without a bunch of hassle.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@c_dan4th it doesn't really work that way without having to use a significant amount of fill. Just scaling the flag to fit ends up with this.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@kaleb Madison's flag is really cool.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@sulrich I'm not 100% I want to do sales of stickers, but with so many requests I'm considering it. After they arrive, I decide. They should be here before New Years

You can now get Minnesota's new state flag painted onto a paddle. It's made by Sanborn Canoe, a Minnesota-based manufacturer. They have a extensive line of painted canoe paddles. The new flag is their latest.

I used to love reading books, but find that as I've gotten older I can't get into them. I remember my dad going through the same thing at about my age. I'd like to start again. Short of picking up a book, which I've tried, does anyone have advice to help get back into reading books?

Signed, the pile of books on my bedstand keeps getting taller

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@TonyYarusso I'm not sure that Grand Marais has a book club. I'll have to ask around

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@brianb I have read Bryson. I didn't like A Walk in the Woods. It was funny and all, but I thru-hiked the AT and his experience was so different from mine that his story didn't click with me. I did like three other books of his that I read

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@TonyYarusso thanks. I'll ask around to see who is in each of those clubs. Small towns can be interesting because everyone knows everyone and there are some people that I wouldn't be comfortable around while discussing books.

Poll time: The new Minnesota flag redesign looks like:

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@jrod3737 I'd argue that the connection to the Texas flag is good. It symbolizes that Minnesota and Texas serve as bookends to the middle part of the country.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@jrod3737 I don't like the dominant politics of Texas, but parts of it are beautiful, and I have friends who live there.

@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

It's hard to believe but the Minnesota Flag Redesign Commission screwed up the choice. They had a great design with the tricolor flag, and it's now lame.

Here's your new flag, Minnesota.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@Ulrich_the_Elder considering that Minnesota is the North Star State, it's hard to come up with something other than a star.

bryanhansel,

@maggiejk this is a photoshopped mock-up that the commission voted on

COOL! The spicy article I wrote about satellite pollution is FINALLY published! "Bright satellites are disrupting astronomy research worldwide" in Nature News & Views.

This article required weeks of back-and-forth with the editor, the editor-in-chief, and Nature's lawyers, so I hope that means it's a good one.

During this process, I learned that satellite companies are so powerful and litigious that even giant publishers like Nature are terrified of getting sued. Which is...rather worrying.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@luke @CStamp @sundogplanets y'all are arguing around the point. We will soon have 40,000 to 80,000 satellites in orbit if this continues at the pace it currently is. There could easily be additional regulations on this that could force companies to co-locate to reduce the number of required satellites and there could be regulations that force companies to build darker satellites. Right now we are on the path to robbing people of the right to witness our universe with their own eyes.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@luke read this article. It's unlocked: https://rdcu.be/drQOU

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@luke @CStamp of course it is a right that is in the Bill of Rights. It's right there in the 9th Amendment.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@luke @CStamp and, Luke, you are still missing the point. Effective regulation could help prevent the issues.

bryanhansel,
@bryanhansel@mstdn.social avatar

@luke @CStamp you're never going to build your own rocket or satellite, so you don't have standing to fight this.

It still ignores the point of the article that effective regulation on these industries could help prevent future problems and fix current ones.
