I don't recall the lake in Tymon Park ever having this much algal growth on the surface. Anyone know what the cause might be?

I won't share the video of Michael O'Leary getting cream-pied because he gets enough publicity to promote his planet-killing business but it's very satisfying to see people fighting back against him.

"Drivers could be left in a 'farcical situation' of" actually being penalised for driving over the speed limit!

(Don't worry Jonathan, we already know that the Gardaí don't enforce 30km/h speed limits and very rarely enforce higher limits)

https://www.newstalk.com/news/its-bonkers-why-blanket-speed-limit-reductions-wont-work-1503637

ccferrie,

Extra marks for calling it a "blanket" speed limit instead of a "default" speed limit to really ramp up the outrage

@jon Lest you got too rosy a view of Irish Rail's bike carrying capacity - this is what I am faced with for my trip to Longford this morning.

ccferrie,

@irishcycle @jon Bike and rail is still the best way to travel, especially on a day like today!

psneeze, to random

My elderly neighbour has his own speed system for years. If he's going as far as the village, he drives at 50km/h. If he's going on a longer drive then it's 80km/h.

*As you'd expect, he actually works off miles per hour.

ccferrie,

@psneeze Sounds like a sensible man!

Important notice for who are not citizens of Ireland.

There are two important votes coming up next year - the Local Elections and the EU Elections.

You do not have to be a citizen of Ireland to vote in these elections.

Citizens of other EU countries resident in Ireland can vote in the EU Elections, all residents can vote in the Local Elections regardless of citizenship.

You must, of coures, be over 18, and registered to vote.

@Ciarancuffe and @jon in Wynn's Hotel this evening talking about cross border rail and Sail & Rail and what needs to be done to make them a more attractive alternative to flying for international travel in Europe.

This interview with the Green Party Housing Minister is quite something.

“It was put to him that reinstating the eviction ban, and keeping people in the accommodation they already have, would help reduce the growing homeless figures.

He responded: “Well then it turns into a communist state, that’s what you are talking about. So we purchase everybody’s property, is it?”

https://www.thejournal.ie/green-party-housing-spokesperson-policy-matters-eviction-ban-6157921-Sep2023/

ccferrie,

@Tupp_ed On a point of order, current Green Party policy, ratified at the party Policy Council earlier this year, is to immediately reinstate the eviction ban. Deputy Duffy's statements do not reflect current party policy.

ccferrie,

@kevinteljeur @Tupp_ed No, the PfG takes precedence. The PP have a mandate to deliver the party policies that were agreed in the PfG. They can and do push for more, and have got the coalition partners to go further than the PfG on some issues despite being the smallest partner in govt, but on other issues there has to be compromise.

But when speaking about these issues publicly outside of a voting situation, you would expect elected reps to represent party policy.

Conor Faughnan on says he's not convinced we need new laws to improve road safety and is lukewarm about the idea of higher penalties for those who commit multiple offences. He's also not convinced about lower speed limits.

And he doesn't think we have too many cars on the road from a road safety point of view.

How does this guy continue to get the opportunity to spread these damaging views in the media?

ccferrie,

He says we need more enforcement, which is correct, but he makes no mention of automatic camera detection and talks only about more Gardaí. We will never have enough Gardaí to have the kind of impact we need to see.

Not only does Faughnan get to air these views. His interview is then quoted on the subsequent news bulletin, reinforcing its message.

ccferrie,

Lower speed limits save lives, we know that as fact. Faughnan opposed lower speed limits when he was with the AA, and is still opposing them.

We currently have the ridiculous situation that if he are caught speeding while using a mobile phone you can only get penalty points for one of the offences. Faughnan doesn't see the merit in changing that.

We know that heavier cars cause more deaths. Faughnan doesn't mention that. Nor does he mention the lax sentencing for road traffic offences.

ccferrie,

@kevinteljeur he's a lobbyist for the motor industry, why is he being asked to comment on road safety?

ccferrie,

@kevinteljeur @ownohmanny We already have the Irish Road Victims' Association, the PARC Road Safety Group, Safe Cycling Ireland, as well as Cyclist.ie and the Irish Pedestrian Network. Why are we not talking to these people, instead of a motor industry lobbyist?

ownohmanny, to random

Here's the news Sean: nobody owes you your living.

ccferrie,

@ownohmanny "pouring" over the maps? Sounds messy!

A social enterprise that I am involved in, Ava Housing, is holding a community information meeting in Artane next Friday to talk to people who might be interested in the scheme.

The fascists on the internet have decided that this is a government conspiracy to force older homeowners to house "unvetted refugees" and have issued thinly veiled threats to my colleagues. We've now had to ask the Gardaí to be present to prevent trouble.

I despair.

The state of this - An Garda Síochána asking people to drive carefully and putting responsibility on the passengers to call out dangerous driving. It's a disgraceful abdication of their own responsibility to enforce road traffic laws.

Liz O'Donnell of the Road Safety Authority calls for lower speed limits and increased penalty points. And she said multiple penalty points “should be the order of the day for people who are doing seriously dangerous driving” and “more visible roads policing” is required immediately.

Every time I am forced to use for a meeting, adds it to my Startup Apps and I have to manually remove it each time.

How do I stop this from happening?

ccferrie,

@simon_brooke 😂 I asked for that!

I’ll say it again: It may come across as callous, but Irish culture avoids blame or detail around deaths in accidents. There are traditional euphemisms to avoid reporting any indication of what factors were involved in deaths here. But I think that it also removes any learning or progress for society, and so the deaths that could be avoided continue instead, because no-one can know how to avoid those circumstances.

ccferrie,

@gonecaving @kevinteljeur more than vaguely, in my opinion. This piece was published before the two recent tragedies in Tipperary and I think it captures the issue very well. https://www.jcfj.ie/2023/08/24/choose-your-weapon-cars-or-fists/
