We have lots of great reasons to change from fossil fuels to renewables, but one underappreciated one is that oil money funds a disproportionately large portion of the resurgence of white supremacy.

@johncarlosbaez @Uair Good luck! If it comes to that, once you’re out and safe, please let us know. I’m up in Canada so somewhat safe, but we seem to be importing more and more of the US Christofascist garbage…so if it’s ever not safe here…I’m still looking for backup.

@johncarlosbaez For sure…and it might be that the fascists don’t get elected and none of the bad stuff happens…hard to say what’s going to happen.

I have now iced my foot six times today for 30 minutes. Working on the 7th now. The toes seem only about half of black and blue as they were yesterday, so I assume that’s progress. It better be, because I don’t think I can take another week of having only one usable foot. It’s gotten really old.

Imagine if all the collective money spent of “self driving cars” had been spent on public transport.

As in, not cars - which are ultimately bad solutions for most of the world - but punctual and pervasive clean-energy public trams, trains, and buses.

It’d have cost less and been far more useful for far more people. Including non-drivers. And actually be here. Today. Working.

cenobyte,
@cenobyte@mastodon.thirring.org avatar

@Shanmonster @mattwilcox I totally get this. I used to get so sick so often due to public transit. Packed busses sharing all the colds and flues going around. Now with no covid precautions and pretty much everyone unmasked it would be a disaster.

Released in 1998, Half-Life is a first person shooter (FPS) game. It is the first game in the Half-Life series.

Part of me wonders why I’m even reviewing Half-Life. Really, what has not been said about Half-Life? Along with Doom, this game is considered the greatest FPS of all time.

But today I was playing this game at my local rec centre on my Steam Deck. I was waiting for my kid’s ukulele class to finish. My wife peered over my shoulder, and she asked me, “Why are you getting so intense over this game?”

That’s when it hit me. Despite being a gamer herself, she had never heard of Half-Life. I had to explain everything to her. And I realized that too many people have never experienced this game – ever.

Let me emphasize this. While Half-Life is an FPS, it’s not the shooting that makes it so special. It’s the world-building, the story, even the mundane interactions that happen when you’re hanging out by a microwave.

Half-Life doesn’t tell you what to do. There’s no tutorials, no cut-scenes, no “radio guy” telling you about your next objective. Everything that happens occurs due to your own curiosity and discovery.

The game starts with you going to work. It’s just another day at the office. You’re doing your regular thing when all hell breaks loose.

You’re not a bad-ass – at least not at first. You’re not trying to be a hero. You’re simply a fellow getting by, trying to manage an extraordinary circumstance all by yourself. That’s what makes this game special.

Controlling Half-Life feels natural. Many things in your environment are interactive. Whether on my tower or my Steam Deck, everything feels smooth as butter.

The graphics resemble something you’d see on a Nintendo 64, but with better draw distance and texture quality. The original game – the one I’m reviewing – actually runs on a modified version of the Quake engine. And thankfully, Valve has continued to update the game for modern resolutions and aspect ratios while keeping the charm of the original graphics.

I love the sound. The voice acting is quirky but well-performed. The ambient and environment effects are executed well. There’s no too much music in this game, but when it happens, it’s distinctive and fun.

This is one of those games that can be played on any modern PC. You need a 500Mhz CPU, 96MB of RAM, and 16MB of VRAM. There is native support for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is verified for Steam Deck, and I can tell you that it runs like a charm!

There is a PS2 version of Half-Life. However, it runs quite differently, to such an extent that I feel it might as well be a different game. I’m not saying it’s terrible, but it’s definitely not as good as the PC version.

Half-Life has no micro-transactions nor DLC. I should mention, though, that there are several mods (such as Blue Shift) that can now be purchased as stand alone games.

Valve developed Half-Life. This is the first game they ever made. And what can I say about them? They’ve made Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, Portal, CounterStrike – and every game in the Half-Life series. Oh, and they run Steam.

I should mention that there have been several updates to Half-Life, including Half-Life: Source which runs on the source engine. There’s also a remake called Black Mesa that utilizes more modern graphics, and it has gained a lot of praise too.

On Steam, Half-Life has a 96% positive rating based on 89,038 reviews. This is as close as it gets to universal praise. The 4% of people who didn’t like it usually didn’t have the patience for the story – and I think they’re losing out.

If you come from the console world and want to get into PC gaming, I think Half-Life is a good place to start. Don’t get me wrong, Minecraft, Doom, and Baldur’s Gate III are also stellar. But I love the curious, deliberate nature of Half-Life that gets you deep into the story.

On Steam, Half-Life sells for C$11.49. For that price, I definitely recommend it. Yes, even now. This is one of PC gaming’s great classics. It is outstanding!
