So. Yay! I finished an epic book.

It was GREAT! But I gotta be honest, I wish I’d spent 35 hours reading a book that had some kind of conclusion.

I know it was part 1 of many, but I still wished things were more wrapped up.

Also, there’s too much detail in battle scenes.

But what a great read. I was totally into it for most of the time and I’m not a big fiction reader.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@ross this is increasingly my annoyance. How books assume the full trilogy would be read from the outset. I feel that books should be pretty self-contained for the main arcs. Tease at bigger narratives, sure, but don’t make the book feel incomplete.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@ross haven’t seen Across the Spiderverse yet so thanks for the heads up! 😆

People with publicly visible tattoos… how do you feel about people asking about them? Is it annoying? Or do you like it … is that the point?

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@ross mixed. Depends on how they ask about them, I guess. I don’t mind them asking, but also, in some ways it’s like asking about a birthmark. Phrasing and attitude matters?

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@ross I’d say it would also depend on if you still like your tattoo or not lol.

Stream of consciousness on efficient URL encoding of a Scrabble game…

The board is 15x15, so 225 spaces. We’ll need the “bag”, so 100 tiles but only actually 86 once game starts. 2 “racks” of 7 letters. And the score.

Each space can be empty, letter, blank tile with associated letter.

So all tiles/spaces can fit in 5 bits (up to 32 combos).

It would be good to represent plays as row/col/tile. But I THINK that’s harder to decode. Though row+col fits in 8 bits. Hmm…

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@ross 271 characters isn’t unreasonable in terms of URL limits, no?

@imtheq @surroundedbyidioms my wife felt similar. She kept waiting for some “actual” premise or climax. Totoro is all she’s seen so far, though.

If you're running the "Better Search Replace" plugin, update it now!

There's a critical security vulnerability that has been fixed last week in version 1.4.5.

@shawnhooper jeez so many security vulnerabilities the last 2 weeks. Are all of these related? ACF Pro and WPforms both released patches, too.

The difference between bad drivers in Boston and California is that while Californian drivers seem to drive badly because they don't know any better, Bostonians know they are driving like assholes and are doing it on purpose.

Went to grab a coffee at Starbucks this morning. They’ve got all their holiday drinks out now.

Is it Christmas already? Sigh.

Wish everyone would wait until at least after Remembrance Day is over.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@scottkeckwarren @shawnhooper if the November holidays involved decorating the house, it might've managed to hold off from expanding all the way to Halloween.

Even Thanksgiving in the US doesn't involve enough decorating to stave off the expansion.

What's the current state of the art in terms of identity verification?

With Twitter blue checks pointless now, we don't have much awareness of what is useful for average individuals to publish their own identity or verify that of others. And with LLMs flooding the web with fake info, I think this is going to become more & more important.

I'd like to look into ensuring my own online identity is as authenticated as possible.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@syntaxseed the best I saw was Keybase’s implementation of the blockchain, posting across accounts to verify, via pgp, a tweet with a hash, etc.

Shame they got bought by Zoom and were basically abandoned afaik.

Having a moment of annoyance with Mastodon. I know WordCamp Atlanta is going on today, and yet I can find nobody posting about it. Searched on Nitter and there are lots of posts. Leaving Twitter/X has disconnected me from an important professional community.

For those who follow me from one of the more WordPress focused instances, are there good WordCamp posts in your local feeds ?

#WCATL #WordPress #WordCamp

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@shawnhooper very similar for me. Between leaving FB and Twitter, and even Reddit, I have no connections anymore and miss out on a LOT. Didn’t even realize WCATL was this weekend.

Glad you recently chose to follow me, we’re slowly rebuilding community here.

Weird to think I spent 15 years writing PHP and now it's been 10 years since I've even looked at it.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@seldo what do you code in these days, if anything?

seldo, to random
@seldo@alpaca.gold avatar

It took the world like 0.3 seconds to stop calling Meta "formerly Facebook" but we are several months in and everyone is either still calling X "formerly twitter" or mostly not bothering calling it X at all. A disastrous brand.

chris,
@chris@suncoast.dev avatar

@seldo it’s easier to say “Meta” instead of “Facebook and Instagram” and Facebook still exists, as a product.

Also, X is dumb. It’s too short, too weird to type (keyboard doesn’t know if you’re just typing the letter or the company name and therefore capitalize it), and they got rid of the product name.

You could/can still interchangeably say Meta or Facebook and you’re only wrong in legal contexts.

More great news on the war against inflation! The Consumer Price Index increased just 0.2% in July, or 2.4% per year. Last spring inflation was running at over 9%. The markets are rising on the news, and so should our spirits!

chris,

@georgetakei @Myerman my spirits should not give two shits about the market. The market doesn't save my wallet. Less corporate greed and fair wages, combined with universal healthcare, etc, does.
