Do people understand the impact ChatGPT can have on how we control our software? No more hunting through menus among a thousand options to figure out how to do something. Just use natural human language. The UIs we've had to design and live with will be a thing of the past. Yet no one seems to be talking about this.

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@scottjenson @davew TBH, I’d be pretty psyched for a local LLM trained on all the man pages so I can just describe what I want and get the commands. I know I can do this with ChatGPT today but would much prefer everything staying local.

The other angle is using it to effective replace AppleScript for compositional workflows between apps. Maybe Apple is building this into Shortcuts…

Played guitar for about an hour and a half. Just slowly easing back into playing guitar again. 😂🎸

I forgot that once I start playing guitar I don't want to stop because it's so fun. 😁

I have a 2020 era iPad Pro and while it’s still going strong, the pull to upgrade is there. Jumping from the A16Z (or whatever) to an M4 will be a huge leap. That said, I’m going to wait until WWDC to see what they do with iPadOS. At this point, under the hood, feels like the biggest difference between iPad Pro and a MacBook Pro HW is RAM. Praying they unleash the OS on this new hardware

@bynkii @lapcatsoftware Yup, considering that previous versions of Epic were a combo of VB and C++ in a massive Win32 binary (and DLLs, of course)

My Mac often REQUIRES my password, even though it has Touch ID.

Anyone know why this is? Shouldn't my fingerprint be enough to, say, install an update?

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@davemark Have you done the thing to add TouchID support to pam.d for sudoers?

@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

WTF is with the uninformed PassKeys hate 🤔

How can it not be easier that username and password? I can’t wait to get everything over to PassKeys and the work @rmondello and team have done for Apple platforms is great — just works everywhere I need it

chrisgervais,

@mattiem Fair, and I haven’t tried it on Android or Windows but seems pretty simple to use in the Apple ecosystem unless I’m missing something

@drahardja It’s literally lighting money on fire. I stopped reading that site when they were basically the PR arm of Tesla. Have they realized yet that Elmo is full of 💩 and that the appreciating value of Teslas is just scam?

@drahardja Wasn't that ad just one of the best? I love the playfulness - even though that generaiton of iMac was short, the machine really did have some personality

A whole bunch more people are enjoying Wallaroo and customizing their wallpapers today thanks to our Kickstarter and that makes me super happy. 🥰

chrisgervais,

@gedeonm I’m glad to have the opportunity to try it but still can’t get the Shortcut to set the wallpaper image on my Home Screen. Tried all the troubleshooting steps but giving it another go soon. So many great images I want to try out!

chrisgervais,

@gedeonm Yeah, tried that and still no joy. Going to uninstall the app and Shortcut and reboot my phone to see if that works (iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 17.4)

Anyone else out there using macOS Universal Control feature between two Macs and having constant disconnects? I have two MBPs (an M1 Max and an M2 Pro) both running Sonoma 14.3 and I continually experience disconnects.

One side effect of the disconnect is that Mac 1 doesn't know it's disconnected from Mac 2 and it takes 8-10 seconds for the system to realize this and give me back trackpad and keyboard control on Mac 1.

Neat.

I pre-ordered the limited edition boygenius Gretsch. They're one of my favorite recent bands, it's not too expensive, and they're only making 1000 of them, so I just went for it.

I wish I had two friends to start a band like that with. It looks like the most fun band to be in.

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin Oh I want to get one of those, too. Sounds and looks great. And boygenius is just an absolute joy to listen to. Saw them in Boston last year and the show was phenomenal

My feeds are FILLED with images and videos of people wearing their Vision Pro out in public (see pic, via Reddit).

Reminds me of how weird AirPods looked when they first started popping up in public. Now they are ubiquitous.

I'm a believer. Vision Pro is going to be a big part of Apple's future.

chrisgervais,

@davemark @Danathar Spend some time around teens and this type of social interaction is already here. Kids sit at the same table and FaceTime each other and bring friends in who aren’t with them at the restaurant or coffee shop so they can all talk. The thought of my kids’ generation sitting around a table without tech as part of the experience seems to be fading fast. They’re already seeing a chunk of the world through the iPhones so this won’t feel like a huge leap to them (except $ to get it)

So I had to rebuild my TiBook and upon reinstalling Mac OS X Tiger onto one of the partitions I can no longer use Software Update to get the system up to the latest Tiger patches and updates. I'm pretty sure this worked last year when I reinstalled -- I have a feeling Apple may have finally turned off HTTP access to swscan.apple.com, but not sure. Any thoughts on resolving?

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

I did download the 10.4.11 Combo updater from Apple's Downloads site but it doesn't cover all the other stuff in the system. If SU is no longer a thing, then maybe I just need to document what updates are necessary to get Tiger fully tricked out and DL them for safe keeping

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@vga256 If you have a machine can you try it and see if you can get a successful connection? I can get a payload back from http://swscan.apple.com/scanningpoints/scanningpointX.xml when running it from my daily driver but not on Tiger

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@vga256 Wow -- thanks for checking! Since I had to rebuild the machine and didn't have anything really setup yet, I'm wiping it and starting again from the Tiger install DVD and see if that helps. I hope I'm not have some kind of hardware failure

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@vga256 Good call. I'm reinstalling now and will try again. My network setup hasn't changed at all (the TiBook is using ethernet not AirPort) and my clock is correct 🤞🏻

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@vga256 Whelp, I figured it out. Ye Olde IPv6 was screwing me over. Disabling that on my TiBook has solved the problem. Thank you for the sanity check!

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@vga256 Yeah, crazy, but everything is working as I expect. I had bastarized the system with MacPorts and Tiger Brew so getting a clean start feels good and am hoping it'll solve my problems with getting code compiling under Retro68

was the Titanium PowerBook G4. It’s hard to describe how far ahead this laptop was in 2002.

The overall shape and weight and placement of keyboard and trackpad, as well as screen size is still practically identical to laptops today.

@thomasfuchs Great first entry point to the Mac! I still have my 500Mhz PowerBook G4 and it's a beautiful design.
