@ChanceHMiller Kinda interesting that we never got to see Steve in the selfie era. Would he have been as open, friendly, and willing to do this? Hard to imagine him having the patience for that whereas really is a natural and it's an asset

@imyke @jsnell Listening to the Apple event Upgrade. Re: double-tap on Apple Watch, I was explicitly informed by Apple yesterday that feature is, like the iPadOS pointer, something that was passed on by the accessibility group to be build out for broader adoption.

I got a Quip smart toothbrush from Target that syncs with Apple Health for $50. I don't feel like it gets my teeth any less clean than my Oral-B electric, I can travel with it, and the tracking is kind of fun. It's got to be one of the cheapest ways to get the Health integration.

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin I’ve been thinking about getting one of those, too, but hadn’t looked in a while and totally forgot about HealthKit integration. My Sonicare base unit is getting nasty…

I think when your editor starts taking 60 seconds to launch, there’s no clear way it can ever be fixed, and it hasn’t had a release in two years, that’s a pretty good indication it’s time to look at alternatives.

It’s a shame because TextMate had so much going for it if it had just kept up with the times. I really do get why people love it so much.

@collin Sigh, same. I’m probably going back to BBEdit. I rediscovered it on Mac OS 9 recently and forgot how much I loved it

Know how every person who interviews Trump should always ask as the very first question “Did Biden win the 2020 election fair and square? Yes or no?”

Every person who sits down with Tim Cook or Phil Schiller from now on should ask them as their very first question “Will Apple stop advertising on Twitter? Yes or no?”

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@gedeonm I can only hope and pray that Tim Cook feels ZERO amount of threat from whatever Musk says.

Hell, at this point, it would be a fantastic use of Apple's cash pile to buy it from Musk and shut it down. They can write it off as part of their environment impact spend -- it would definitely clean up the Super Fund site that's been created there. Future generations will be better off

@popsci Yikes, if you really care about some good content this would be a mistake. Dollar for dollar, Apple TV+ is a better spend for some great content versus the landfill offerings elsewhere. But I guess if you just watch TV to watch TV, I can see how most of their shows can go over viewers’ heads

Anyone know of an #http parsing library or code for classic #macos? After decrypting a #SSL #TCP stream I’d love to shove it into a lib that can parse it all out and let me extract the relevant bits. I found HTTP sample code for OpenTransport but not sure if that’s right path. I may also not be thinking of the problem correctly but having fun experimenting and kinda don’t want to write it from scratch #RetroComputing #macintosh

The introduction of StandBy in iOS 17 makes me think that I should get a proper charger/stand for my night table and Anker’s 3-in-1 cube seems like a damn good candidate. https://www.apple.com/dk/shop/product/HQ3E2Z/A/anker-3-in-1-cube-med-magsafe

After several failed attempts using a complicated technique, I successfully sewed a simple pattern to make a SMD resistor phone case. I forget to fully include the seam allowance in the size computation, so it just barely fits my phone. It makes a nice set along with my PTH resistor glasses case!
#sewing #sewingproject

A cutting mat with two small zipper bags on it. The glasses case bag in the background looks like a 47 Ohm through-hole resistor with a zipper in the tolerance stripe and the phone case bag in the foreground looks like a surface mount resistor with black body containing the number "103", and silver faux leather ends, with a zipper in one end and small D-ring attached to one side.

I wonder if I had been able to talk my parents into getting me a G3 iMac as a kid what my life would look like now. I learned to program because QBasic was available on Windows 9x and there were lots of resources for me on the web.

If I was using Mac OS 8 or 9, I know it was possible to find something similar, but I wonder if the legwork required would have been more than 13 year old me was up for?

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin I’m a weirdo because I basically ignored the entirety of DOS and Windows until I entered the workforce in the mid ‘90s. I loved coding on classic Mac OS as a teen and have been doing more as of late. It did teach me a ton and ironically really led me to embrace OOP concepts (like encapsulation) because so much of the classic Mac OS was a free-for-all

@nicklockwood @collin HyperCard was such a joy. In college, for a project, I built a guided tour stack to run on kiosks to help students navigate around campus. It sported videos that I shot on a VHS camcorder and digitized on my PowerMac 7100 and some custom XCMDs I wrote to sync elements on cards to video. So much fun. I wish I could find that code!

chrisgervais,
@chrisgervais@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin @arroz @nicklockwood HyperTalk, like AppleScript, is definitely something that, today, looks odd and difficult (ok, AppleScript is difficult) but at the time had big differentiators from state of the art BASIC - remember HyperCard came out in 1987 and VB in 1991, IIRC

This ad poster for the iMac is utterly perfect. Perfect photo, perfect slogan (the period at the end is key — “Yum” without the period wouldn’t quite play the same way), perfect relative scale and placement of the elements. Even the kerning is perfect — Apple Garamond never looked better or more timeless.

chrisgervais,
