Ok.. I have a question.

I'm trying to install SublimeText4, and I keep getting this error about an insecure package and cant' seem to figure out how to allow it.

error: Package ‘openssl-1.1.1w’ in /nix/store/qbjk4md1rmjhv9rx0iaixqyhrdhwkl4c-nixos-23.11/nixos/pkgs/development/libraries/openssl/default.nix:223 is marked as insecure, refusing to evaluate.

Oofff.. question. I have this 2011 iMac that will only boot to a live usb with "nomodeset"

And I can install linux from it. But then I can't boot into it. And I can't get to the grub menu to add that param.

How can I install linux so it's just on nomodeset, or somehow make the graphics card behave?

It's an iMac 12,2

codemonkeymike,
@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org avatar

@enobacon yeah i guess. I can't boot to the HDD to change it there.. so I'd like to be able to do it from the live usb.. seems possibe?

codemonkeymike,
@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org avatar

@ahoneybun @enobacon well when i boot to the USB drive, I get the grub menu to choose compatibility mode (nomodeset)

But once it's installed, I never get to see the grub menu.. it just boots right into a black screen.

I really need to get into the installed version so I can make nomodeset permanent.

codemonkeymike,
@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org avatar

@ahoneybun @enobacon thats what I thought but nope.. doesn't seem to bring up grub.. i'll play with it later

Confession: I kinda like just plain old

It's not my personal go to distro. But it feels amazing and solid, even on a crap laptop like this. (HP stream with a Celeron and emmc)

@danct12 yup I think it's 768. Not great lol.

And yes. Extremetuxracer and supertuxkart is how my kids QA these laptops.

This will end up being donated to someone local that just needs a simple machine.

I don't get it people. There is this whole big drum banging about how the language is immutable.

Yet, here in the most basic example, "a" has 3 different values in the same session.

That seems pretty mutable to me! So in what way is this language immutable? Help me understand!

codemonkeymike,
@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org avatar

@orsinium interesting.. ok.. so i get it.. the function can return a new value.. but then I can still rebind that value back to the original variable.

sooo a = a + 1 will still change a

So, uh, we gotta talk about your new "install wizard" that's not a wizard, doesn't give any options before failing and forcing you to clear the errors by actually making the choices you didn't put into a wizard workflow.

Oh, any why I the blue fuck is the continue button on the top left? Are you the community or something?

@WagesOf did they make something worse than anaconda?!

Every once in a while, my son and I order a batch of 10 scrap laptops from Discount Electronics.

It's 10 random laptops for $100. None are perfect and they vary in age. So it's like a nerd surprise bag.

Let's see what we get!

My SaaS company (MemberVault) is looking for a #ui / #ux #designer to help us overhaul and modernize our app.

Not a full time job yet, but contract on some projects to start and hopefully find someone we like working with long term.

Just looking for someone with clean, minimal eye for web app design. Tailwind UI type style.

And another quick / question. What's the experience like for users with maybe unstable internet connection.

Can they still view the page their on? How does the page degrade when you loose connection to the websocket?

codemonkeymike,
@codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org avatar

@adrianc thanks! Yeah I realize it's a degraded experience.. I'm just wondering if I could like simply disable comment buttons or somethign if they're not connected.. but the user can still view the page

Over 6.5 times larger than EndeavourOS
Over 5 times larger than Garuda, Linux Mint, Feren OS, Pop!_OS, Fedora, & Zorin
Over 3 times larger than Ubuntu, Manjaro & Debian

Dear friends. Does anyone need (or know somebody who needs) a good solid Linux laptop? ( 6th Gen x1 carbon )

I got this for a bargain over a year ago and it owes me nothing. I've recently replaced it and happy to mail this to someone who can use it. For free!

For shipping reasons, I can only offer this to people in the US.
