I started a project a few years ago of visiting every state park in Maryland. I thought it was going to be easy before realizing how many state parks there are!

I've just passed the half way mark now with over 35 parks visited.

@BaltimoreBanner I’ve been working through all the MD state parks as well!

This past week I spent out in Westen Maryland and I have to admit my new favorite is Swallow Falls State Park.

I won't be attending but since I'm seeing people share tips for attending the conference, I wanna share my thoughts on how attendants can make conferences a better experience for everyone.

@hamatti I love the pac man rule for conferences!

At a recent talked, I had a nodder in the audience and it gave me such a boost that I thanked them afterwards for being a great audience member.

Thanks for the post!

@danielskatz it’s been a while since I’ve done that segment! if you ever get a chance, the NY to Montreal is also a beautiful train ride.

One of my biggest adjustments in moving back to the USA is remembering about the great holiday desert from President’s Day to Memorial Day.

Other countries have Easter and May Day to break up these months but I really have to remember to book off some vacation in April. Fortunately I’m taking off all of next week and I am ready for it!

I'm struggling to understand the outputs of the Hyper-SuprimeCam SSP's data expansion pipeline!

The catalogs have 246 flag bits and a baffling number of measurements. I feel like less would be more!

coadd image:
116M ./pdr3_wide/deepCoadd-results/HSC-G/9570/0,8/calexp-HSC-G-9570-0,8.fits

catalog:
146M ./pdr3_wide/deepCoadd-results/HSC-G/9570/0,8/meas-HSC-G-9570-0,8.fits

crawfordsm,
@crawfordsm@mastodon.social avatar

@dstndstn the catalog is bigger than the images?

Extracting more information than in the observation seems like an interesting decision.

It makes me feel like there is a basic principle of information being violated or that you should just ne doing inference on the image rather than creating a catalog.

crawfordsm,
@crawfordsm@mastodon.social avatar

@dstndstn Ah being designed for the time domain/ multiple images would then make a little more sense for the size of it.

If including cutouts in the data, I can see where it can blow up in size.

It’s still an interesting choice - I’d be curious for the design constraints that led to it. I could also see depending on the use case that you might just drop 99% of the catalog.

So many things came out of the Open Science Retreat this year! 🤩

A bot that shares learning resources, a guidance document for staff assessment, and speculative fiction are just a few examples.

It will uses colors to study vegetation in the oceans and on land; and polarimeters to study aerosols to track the ocean-atmosphere interaction

Four new proposals for Earth Science missions have been selected for the next step!

The proposals study gases in the troposphere and mesosphere, measure ocean surface currents and winds, observe the structure of ecosystems and glaciers, and monitor greenhouse gases.

Of these, two will be selected after further design work with an aim to launch in 2030 or 2032 - this is one of the first steps in a long process!

Great first day at the Software for the Science Mission Directorate workshop. Over 180 people taking about software and software policy! Such a great feeling seeing everyone’s excitement and passion around software.

I was feeling pretty stressed leading into the meeting so I’m pretty happy with the first day.

I can’t wait to share the public links to the talks.

Is there a web accessibility checker service out there that gives me actionable advice instead of trying to sell me consulting or webinars? Le Sigh. Any hints welcome.

UPDATE: https://wave.webaim.org did exactly what I was looking for. It showed me the issues right where they are and told me what to do. It is now almost done :) Thx to @josephdickson for the tip!

@jwildeboer In the USA, Section 508 compliance tools can be useful for accessibility.

Here are a few lists of tools:
https://www.section508.gov/tools/

Here is an open source tester and organization with other tools:
https://github.com/Section508Coordinators/TrustedTester5.1

Note I haven’t tried these myself but was just reading about them yesterday.

Like an overtaxed server, a team at 90% utilization completely breaks down when one person stumbles.

There’s a damage cascade you might not be accounting for.

@asmartbear I had a great manager who’s philosophy was ‘less is more’ and I learned a lot from thinking about that though it has not always been easy to apply in other situations.
