Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

@rhoot @mattcen @xahteiwi this is exactly the reason UTC is not always as great as it sounds, especially for recurring meetings.

It's driving me absolutely nuts how both American and German progressive circles are indulging in this delusional and childish political take "the Good Party is not perfect so let's not vote at all or vote for a clearly hopeless marginal party and then pretend we're not to blame when the Bad Party wins". Fucking kindergarten.

creepy_owlet,

@deshipu definitely, but you're not going to fix it in several months (USA) or one year (Germany).

One of the few good things to happen during the pandemic: they opened our town's main shopping street to humans, and it was wonderful.

Then they closed it again, of course.

creepy_owlet,
@creepy_owlet@mastodon.online avatar

@tanepiper @mattb my wife and I have discussed it many times: these times had some unusually refreshing vibes to them. The main street of our city was calm and nearly free of parked cars. Everyone picked up cool hobbies.

Were it not for so many people dying.

@deshipu interestingly, it's not just that. Somehow, many factors manage to align each time.

The Netflix version of 3-Body Problem is much closer to the original book. Sure, there are rewrites, but they improve the story. Very different from the trash that Tencent created, with weird Tiktok references and stretching the first book into 30 episodes!

i absolutely love for whipping up quick automation. i'm doing some cleaning of movie files locally and in about 30 minutes i have an app that encodes my ffmpeg commands with nice cli flags and even doctests XD

is there a shell that incorporates python as the shell language?

@elmiko you're on a dangerous path, I'd leave this tool to what it does the best :)

I mean... I understand not wanting bash. But you probably don't want Python in this role either.

@xahteiwi me! The scale here is mind-blowing. As far as I remember, the Paris summit felt cozier. Food was somewhat of a problem as well though 😁

I am also surprised by some organization decisions here today. E.g. not having enough coffee stands, or places to sit down (let alone hacking lounges), or maps of this enormous venue.

I'm actually curious why decided to allocate himself only 87% of "votes" and not closer to 97%. He's already shown that he can do anything he wants. And while 13% doesn't sound like a lot, it's still more than 10 million people officially against him. Not the unity he wants to see in the face of a conquest war against the West.

Anyway, join me in counting those who report on the "elections" as if they were real.

Something makes my Dict based objects almost as small as my Slots based objects, but I don't know what.

Also, I am storing around 400 bytes worth of data in an object, but it's either 1.6 KB or even 3.3 KB in size.

@isotopp may not explain the discrepancy itself, but I wonder if asizeof takes into account free capacity in dictionaries, which is allocated but not filled with elements. I cannot clearly understand it from their docs.

@xahteiwi @FunkyBob I don't see any reasons to expect dnf/apt etc to become better if you throw more developers at them. They do their job and do it very well.

It's not their job to solve problems like "I don't want the proprietary Slack/Zoom guts all over my filesystem (and to give its installer a root access)". Or "this software requires libraries that are too ancient for my Fedora / too new for my Debian".
